atlih··on Sweden leads the race to become cashless society
Bank loans are new money according to The Bank of England http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/publications/Documents/quarte... The reason banks get into trouble is because they cannot meet even their tiniest obligations in actual currency. In a cashless society this will not be a problem, just unlimited digital money creation.
atlih··on Sweden leads the race to become cashless society
That's something to be worried about. But I'm more worried about banks having the power to issue unlimited currency which is a default in a cashless society
atlih··on Ask HN: How do you create productive habits?
What we are dealing with here is what the author Steven Pressfield calls "Resistance". He has two great books on the subject that helped me a lot and you should check out: The War of Art (2002) and Do The Work (2011)

Procrastination is basically a consequence of letting resistance run amok and by dismantling the resistance, all the wind goes out of the procrastination.

Looking for an app or some cutting edge new way to deal with a 10.000 year old problem (that was also solved 10.000 years ago) is pretty much just putting a band-aid on it.

atlih··on Who's Profiting from $1.2T of Federal Student Loans?
I see you have been downvoted by people who have no idea what fiat money is. Grats
atlih··on Who's Profiting from $1.2T of Federal Student Loans?
to the shredder, read up on fractional reserve lending.
atlih··on State of emergency in France
So converting the Western countries into Saudi Arabia is the solution you bring to the table?
atlih··on The Observatory of Economic Complexity
I really like the concept. The makers might want to reconsider the resource-hog on this one. My 300mbit connection and Mac Pro with 64GB Ram can barely handle navigating this.
atlih··on Study: people who eat and exercise the same as people 20 years ago are fatter
Because we eat more carbs and less fat today than 20 years ago.
atlih··on Ask HN: How are some people exceptionally productive?
This! If a task is not on the list I don't feel good about completing it. It's like it never happened, and I look at the list and it's still full. "Nothing got done" scumbag brain says :)
atlih··on The self-hating web developer
Not much left for low-level programmers to do then :)
atlih··on The self-hating web developer
Basically anything that has to do with non-web and non-mobile apps. The app for your nearest ATM machine for example.
atlih··on The self-hating web developer
I find web developers in general more knowledgeable. Sure they are not working in low level programming, but those that are working in low level programming often don't know what DNS, FTP or SQL is.

Remember that those who work in low level programming had nothing to do with writing the language or building the compilers. They just got a degree and started working.

atlih··on Slavoj Žižek on GReferendum: The Greeks are correct
What do you mean fail? You mean decrease in value? That would have been perfect, but it would have bankrupted German industry with it's sky high Deutsche Mark and noone to buy their goods in the countries with "no credibility"
atlih··on Slavoj Žižek on GReferendum: The Greeks are correct
Add Italy, Spain & Portugal, and your "tiny fraction" theory goes out the window. Had Germany just stayed with the Deutsche Mark the euro would be fine today and the Germans wouldn't have exported so much to the PIGS + Rest of the eurozone. Their GDP would be at most 10% less than it is today.
atlih··on A Dutch city is giving money away to test the basic income theory
You can't change people with a formula. There's a lot of lazy people working now today, to the detriment of society and the economy. Think of the opportunities though, a bunch of nerds could move up to the countryside and work on nuclear fusion and cure for cancer instead of having to apply at a bank or some ladder-climbing corporate gig.
atlih··on A Dutch city is giving money away to test the basic income theory
They would get it from economic growth among other things.
atlih··on Project Jacquard
What do you mean "Here goes my dream". On the contrary, here's your chance to have that dream. Where there was little or none before.
atlih··on BingoCardCreator.com Sale Page
Congrats Pat!

More time for podcasts now eh? :)

atlih··on Ask HN: I am about to be fired. What should I do?
Don't worry about it. There's plenty of need for Data Scientists and the need is growing exponentially in the months to come.
atlih··on What's the use for Bitcoin?
This is the shittiest article I've read on HN to date.

Remittance not useful because of currency exchange spreads? Well then no currencies are useful for remittance.

As for the illegal part, are US dollars not useful for Drugs, Gambling, Tax Evasion and Escaping capital controls anymore? So then, when was the last time some one used US Dollars for any of the illegal activities above? The news didn't reach me.

atlih··on Programmer Passion Considered Harmful
I have a female intern that leaves on the clock, she gets more done than me. Probably because of it. The owners of the company ask me why does she leave so early, and I ask them back, why do your people in other apartments that stay late get nothing done?
atlih··on Goodbye MongoDB, Hello PostgreSQL
Not that im excusing mysql, but what I do when adding columns to a +10mil row tables is to create a new table with the new column and then insert into newtable from oldtable.

That changes those few hours into few seconds.

atlih··on [dead]
Not admittedly for corporate welfare, but their priority is stopping the pennies going to wheelchairs first and then maybe look at corporate subsidies.
atlih··on [dead]
I agree with the idea behind the article, most libertarians are shocked at each penny spent subsidizing people in wheelchairs while turning a blind eye to the fact that Forbes 500 gets enormous subsidies from the government and that list would look completely different if not for government regulations favoring them especially and or outright subsidies. This is not only a blind spot for libertarians, this is a blind spot for most lefties as well. They call for higher taxes that will eventually end up in CEO bonuses. Until this blind spot is addressed there's no point in discussing politics.
atlih··on Hex, Lies and Startups
Well what you know benefits established firms as well, and is actually more valuable to them on average than it is to blank paper startups that noone knows for certain if there's a demand for. While growth hacking helps launching startups off the ground, it also helps prevent established firms from sinking.
atlih··on Hex, Lies and Startups
Good story, my opinion is that if you hadn't been personally invested in this whole thing, chances are you would just have done a mediocre job like 99.5% of office workers and the company would never taken off.

Basically you are a well experienced growth hacker now while the owner is clueless. So in the end, you got more out of it than him.
