athorax··on MinIO passes 1B cumulative Docker Pulls
Wow I had no idea that was the case, thanks for the detailed examples!
athorax··on MinIO passes 1B cumulative Docker Pulls
This might be a bit pedantic, but isn't it not necessarily that they provide a modified minio to users, but rather (or additionally) they are running a service that uses a modified minio under the hood?
athorax··on YouTube May Force You to Watch 10 (Or More) Unskippable Ads in a Row
I think there is an important distinction between the content itself being free and the infrastructure cost required to host things costing money.
athorax··on Pitch lays off 30% of staff
Good to see another CEO taking full responsibility
athorax··on Show HN: Heat Pumps, Hooray – A heat pump calculator for your home
I'm in Colorado and have the furnace set between 63-65 in the winter by choice, nothing to do with cost
athorax··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
This is honestly a bafflingly ignorant comment. The British royalty are responsible for reprehensible acts against humanity. To pretend as if the queen is no different than any other person undermimes centuries of oppression by the British empire.
athorax··on Falsehoods programmers believe about email
Same! I have an email that contains a common female name (even though the actual email doesn't have anything to do with that name) and I constantly get emails of someone trying to setup accounts for various services /shrug
athorax··on Ask HN: Anyone here switch to Go for building (REST) APIs?
That was a super interesting read, thanks for sharing!
athorax··on Ask HN: Anyone here switch to Go for building (REST) APIs?
Can you elaborate on why HTTP APIs cannot be REST APIs? I know a lot of http services are misclassified as REST, but why can they by definition not be?
athorax··on How to stop being “terminally online”
If you are getting banned regularly from online communities you might want to reconsider why that is happening
athorax··on Review of 17α-ethynylestradiol in water across 32 countries: Estrogenic effects
Where do you think the water in those bottles comes from exactly?
athorax··on Why Medium Failed
Dev.to has become littered with articles regurgitating popular project's documentation examples, unfortunately. Medium has this problem to an extent, but discoverability on dev.to has become increasingly difficult due to low effort spam
athorax··on Ask HN: Remote work credit? I built an app that the company thinks my boss built
"He mentioned the head of the project doesn't know I exist"

This makes me wonder if maybe you working remotely isn't exactly kosher and your boss is covering his and your behinds until you are in the office.

athorax··on Freezing Requirements with Pip-Tools
I don't see the link between poetry and direnv? Poetry is about solving python's dependency issues, direnv doesn't seem to have anything to do with that
athorax··on BMW heated seats subscription costs $18 per month in South Korea
Exactly. This is probably a $300 actual cost item they have to charge 5x for to pay for all the supporting infrastructure and software engineers
athorax··on BMW heated seats subscription costs $18 per month in South Korea
It is mind blowing that this is something people are willing to accept. The feature is there, the ecological damage is done already by including those extra resources, and you've paid for the vehicle but don't actually own its capabilities.
athorax··on Lion's mane mushrooms: Benefits and side effects
I'll throw in my anecdote.

I was suffering from hand tremors that had no obvious root cause. It was getting bad enough I was starting to spill drinks while holding (relatively) heavy glasses.

Saw a doctor and got screened for all the potential causes and nothing came back.

I decided to try lions mane and took it daily for about 6 months. That was 3 years ago and my hands are steady as they've ever been. Ymmv.

athorax··on Whatever hit the Moon in March, it left a double crater
Now that is an interesting factoid!
athorax··on Every Sufficiently Advanced Configuration Language Is Wrong
That is exactly what it is though. The Ansible CLI is just a client of that API. You can easily interface with the library itself in python
athorax··on Wearing flashy/status clothes makes people less likely to cooperate with you
I don't think you are the target demographic this article is referencing.
athorax··on Sometimes users prefer the less straightforward UX
I don't think the 2nd UX was in any way less "straightforward"

For an app that is heavily reliant on geographical location, showing things on a map is way more intuitive than just showing whatever random location was last reviewed

athorax··on Ask HN: Good review sites and channels by humans
Maybe a little niche, but car-review YouTube has some refreshingly honest reviewers.

A couple of my favorites: Throttle House SavageGeese TheTopher Hagerty - specifically Jason Camisa's videos SmokingTire

athorax··on Watching less TV could lower heart disease risk
FTA: "sedentary behaviour – any behaviour performed in the sitting, reclining or lying posture, while awake – has recently emerged as a risk factor for CHD."

Shocking.

athorax··on 30-year mortgage rate surges to 6.28%, up from 5.5% just a week ago
That is hugely optimistic. Rates could just as easily be 8% in 2-3 years
athorax··on DALL-E Mini – Generate images from a text prompt
One I tried was "raccoon riding bear" and it was just a horrific amalgamation of faces and fur
athorax··on DALL-E Mini – Generate images from a text prompt
Mostly just getting unrecognizable blobs
athorax··on Microsoft will include pay ranges in all U.S. job postings
That is explicitly called out as not being allowed:

"An employer cannot post a $70,000-$100,000 range for a junior accountant position just because it pays senior accountants at the high end of that range. But it can post $70,000-$100,000 for an accountant if it does not limit the posting to junior or senior accountants, and genuinely might offer as low as $70,000 for a junior accountant, or as much as $100,000 for a senior one."

athorax··on Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs
I looked up a few of the medications I take and the prices were about even with what I pay at Costco. This is great if it is more accessible for more people
athorax··on Platform Teams Are Dead
That was my take away as well lol
athorax··on The case for expanding rather than eliminating gifted education programs (2021)
I had a similar experience, not necessarily with being able to move around to different teachers. In general, the teachers for the gifted classes were leagues ahead of the normal teachers. By having access to better teachers, I for sure received a better education than non-gifted students. And honestly, I can see why that is a problem. Ideally all teachers would be competent and caring, but as a society we tend to treat the position as a glorified baby sitter
