athorax··on IBM acquires Kubecost
One of the main value adds of these tools is to help identify and categorize workloads into OpEx and CapEx buckets
athorax··on Ask HN: Is a Masters in CS/Engineering worth it for a mid-career PM?
What causes 4 day old questions like this to resurface with the timestamps showing hours old instead of days?
athorax··on Lottery Simulator (2023)
It might just be me, but it took me awhile to even realize there were interactive components on the page. Something about it made it seem like they were screenshots.
athorax··on PSA: Eget That Executable from GitHub
Not exactly the same, but aqua is a similar tool in this space https://github.com/aquaproj/aqua
athorax··on Show HN: A somewhat faster, more lightweight, ripgrep-inspired alternative
I appreciate including the caveat about this being circumstantially faster, but do you have the benchmarks for the usage cases this performs better than rip-grep?
athorax··on U.S. Added 818,000 Fewer Jobs Than Reported Earlier
That might be the case for the top 5% of earners, but I doubt those are even the same people who have been hit by recent layoffs.
athorax··on Ask HN: Every day feels like prison
> I'm not depressed

Citation needed.

Seriously, as someone who has struggled in much the same way, go talk to a therapist or psych. Depression doesn't mean being sad all the time. Finding little interest or pleasure in doing things is one of the core diagnostic criteria.

athorax··on Space Age release date
100% agree. My friends and I have played WoW on and off since release, and I never thought much of it. I could easily step away from it and used it mostly as a way to keep in touch with that group. We recently found out how much of a toll it has taken on one of ours friends lives who has pretty much always played even while the rest of the group was taking breaks.
athorax··on Ask HN: Is there any software you only made for your own use but nobody else?
I made a CLI tool that templates out jira tickets so I never have to open the jira web client to create tickets. It took me far longer than it could ever possibly save me in terms of time, but it's the small victories over horrible, bloated, corporate software that give me joy
athorax··on gRPC: The Bad Parts
The author does mention it in the article and is also a contributor to supporting tooling

https://github.com/sudorandom/protoc-gen-connect-openapi

athorax··on gRPC: The Bad Parts
I do generally agree the tooling sucks, but as mentioned, buf and the connectrpc ecosystem have made it much easier to get things going.
athorax··on Musk, SpaceX sued by former employees alleging sexual harassment and retaliation
How do you type something like this out without being incredibly embarrassed? None of this behavior is acceptable in a work environment. Full stop.
athorax··on Popular Mac app 'Bartender' acquired by new unknown developer
Our docks require the same permission as a way to verify the multiple monitors are actually working. As a result I just bring my usb-c dongle and a couple usb-c -> displayport cables instead
athorax··on Ask HN: How do I get an invite to Lobste.rs?
If you happen to see this, could I get an invite as well? Email in bio. Many thanks!
athorax··on Amber: Programming language compiled to Bash
I think bash scripts are perfectly fine for things like install scripts. The general advice isn't about the script getting too big, more so if its getting too complicated and you are already trying to use bash as a programming language.

Things like dealing with arrays, loops, calling APIs and parsing responses, etc. You certainly can do it all in bash, but at some point it becomes pretty unmaintainable.

athorax··on Tesla recalls all cybertrucks for faulty accelerator pedals
That is objectively not true https://www.tesla.com/support/annual-and-recall-service
athorax··on Tesla recalls all cybertrucks for faulty accelerator pedals
These numbers are pretty meaningless without more context, Ford manufactures ~3x more vehicles per year than Tesla
athorax··on A simple 3-body problem simulator
I like this one, it took a couple of tries that didn't result in at least one the objects being yeeted out of the system
athorax··on Can GPT optimize my taxes? An experiment in letting the LLM be the UX
LGTM
athorax··on Oxide Cloud Computer. No Cables. No Assembly. Just Cloud
You were never their target audience. There is never one price off the shelf pricing for this kind of hardware
athorax··on My productivity app is a never-ending .txt file (2022)
How is a single text file overkill vs. using a whole application to structure your notes and format with markdown?
athorax··on Popular Git config options
I think the fact that so many tools were setup to assume `master` and have no way to configure it differently was the real problem, and as annoying as it was to have GH switch to `main` it did force a lot of tools to be updated to make that configurable. Whether you use main, master, trunk, development, or anything else, the fact is the name is arbitrary and treating it any other way was incorrect.
athorax··on Popular Git config options
I think most people don't even remotely care about master vs. main, but it definitely gives me pause when someone is so bothered by another persons choice not to use master.
athorax··on Prefer table driven tests (2019)
You can target specific table driven tests by name in order to just run/debug a single case
athorax··on Order/license chaos for VMware products after Broadcom takeover
OpenStack is pretty okay these days
athorax··on Show HN: I built ContainerCVE – a web tool to scan public Docker images
That seems pretty much impossible to accurately classify. Any container image that runs a server could be seen as malicious depending on the user
athorax··on Beeper – Moving Forward
I can't help if that is how you interpreted what I said, but I fully agree apple is well within their rights to block this type of usage.
athorax··on Beeper – Moving Forward
Why? Its clear after 2 attempts that Apple is serious about continuing to break their business model, so why keep fighting a company with unlimited resources that has their sights set on you?
athorax··on JetBrains AI
Kinda lame this isn't included in the "All Products Pack"
athorax··on Yabai – A tiling window manager for macOS
The associated hotkey daemon used by yabai from the same author is equally as useful
