It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

atebyagrue··on The Commodore 77, an All-New Cyberpunk 2077 Collaboration
Seems like a Neuromancer collaboration would have made more sense, but I'll take all the C64's I can.
atebyagrue··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
Interesting. I started a similar project with tbaMUD (continued dev of CircleMUD) to Rust in an effort to learn Rust. I'd offer to help, but am currently consumed with converting to Evennia (Python) right now.
atebyagrue··on Proton Sheets Launches as Encrypted Alternative to Google Sheets
Sweet. Was just looking into a Sheets alternative this weekend. Now I can fully get my gaming sessions off of Google.
atebyagrue··on Multi-User Dungeon (MUD)
Great book. This one & "Mud Game Programming" by Ron Penton & the CircleMUD Documentation Project are also very good resources.
atebyagrue··on Multi-User Dungeon (MUD)
Evennia is great. I've been a user & supporter for a couple of years now. I highly recommend taking a look at it to anyone interested in MUDs. One day, I'll actually finish my CircleMUD conversion...
atebyagrue··on Ask HN: What projects do you donate to?
I love me some Evennia; a Djano/python-based MUD framework. Saved me the trouble of rebuilding a well-crafted wheel & have been loyal supporter for years now. https://www.evennia.com/
atebyagrue··on The Lost Art of Research as Leisure
This article sums up precisely why I don't mind being a "forever GM".

I'm constantly researching new things to flesh out game ideas for my groups to add flavor, immersion & a sense of "reality" to my players' worlds & I love doing it. It almost makes running the actual games for them, an afterthought to tide me over to the new thing to learn about & implement. Great article!

atebyagrue··on Otter Wiki: A minimalistic wiki powered by Python, Markdown and git
I was literally building my own version of this with madness this morning to go from Obsidian to web in my workflow. Thanks for speeding things up for me. Great work!
atebyagrue··on Launch HN: Marblism (YC W24) – Generate full-stack web apps from a prompt
This is great. Created a character generator & editor for my TTRPG group in about 5 minutes. Haven't dug too deep yet, but it created a working baseline that I was hoping for. Thanks! Will definitely be an eye on this. Keep up the good work!
atebyagrue··on Tinystatus: A tiny status page generated by a Python script
Wow, great work. This is exactly something I was getting geared up to do for myself. Thanks for sharing!
atebyagrue··on Ask HN: What nonfiction books do you keep rereading?
The Foxfire books ever since I was little. It's a series of books documenting traditional skills like crop growing, fiddle making, blacksmithing, plumbing, foraging, cooking, etc. as done by rural people in Appalachia. They contain all kinds of valuable information in them as well as a good source of life skills & fun hobbies. I recommend them to everyone.
atebyagrue··on Consider the Pawpaw
The softer they are, the more ripe they are. Outwards, they may have a spot of browning towards the overripe end like a banana. The ones that I usually go for are green with a slight give.
atebyagrue··on Consider the Pawpaw
I've been harvesting these in the wild for years. They are pretty difficult to describe in flavor (banana/mango/tropical being a good approximation), as the flavor isn't consistent even between close patches. They have about a 3 week ripe window mid-to-end August (depending on the shade) in my area when they should be harvested. I typically just push on the slender tree & if any fall; they're ripe. It's best to harvest them, halve them, scoop them into a freezer bag, and use when desired. It's the only way I've found to be able to preserve them & the delicate flavor some of them tend to have.
atebyagrue··on GUNHED – English dub version (1989) [video]
Oh man. Great find! I stumbled across this a few months ago while researching gritty 90's BLJ + mirrorshades cyberpunk for a game setting I'm working on (pre-the current cyan + magenta synth-pop conceptualization). If you end up liking GUNHED, some others that might be up your alley to look up: Hardware (1990), 964 Pinnocchio (1991), Testsuo: The Iron Man (1989), and Burst City (1982).
atebyagrue··on Email in the 18th century: the optical telegraph (2007)
Agreed. This book is great. I stumbled across it while researching a steampunk RPG I was making years ago & instantly fell in love with it. Highly recommend it.
atebyagrue··on How to Grow a Three Sisters Garden (2016)
I've grown three sisters gardens for quite a few years with great results since discovering it in a book while researching native growing methods & the Eastern Agricultural Complex. I've found the two most important things are selection of seed strains appropriate for your area/zone & spacing between the mounds. The majority of seed packs or starter kits may not be appropriate for your zone. For more information about growing methods, clearing, timing, spacing, etc., I'd recommend the fascinating read at: https://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/buffalo/garden/garde... or https://archive.org/details/agricultureofhid02wils/page/n13/...
atebyagrue··on Google Docs Dark Mode
Seconded. Dark Reader is fantastic. I've been a longtime user of it & would definitely recommend it for anyone on Brave, Firefox, & Chrome.
atebyagrue··on The Odin – DIY genetic engineering
Same here. Been a happy customer of theirs for years & even attended one of their Biohack the Planet conferences back before Covid. Everyone that I met who worked there was great. The team really goes above & beyond to make their customers happy and to promote citizen science.
atebyagrue··on Douglas Adams on Hypercard and new educational models
Never played with the format back in the day, but while researching it a while back, I found that archive.org hosts some of the older ones & you can play with them online: https://archive.org/details/BeyondCyberpunkMacintosh
atebyagrue··on Ask HN: Can you recommend me a fast, light text editor for Windows?
You are 100% correct. My mistake. I was thinking of something else for some reason. That's what I get for trying to socialize before I've finished my morning coffee.
atebyagrue··on Ask HN: Can you recommend me a fast, light text editor for Windows?
I've used SciTE for years. I originally came across it looking for a lightweight, cross-platform editor that had a small footprint, regex replace, and find in files capabilities.

EDIT: just noticed you mention syntax highlight. No love there, sorry.

atebyagrue··on Native American restaurants
I make it a point to go to the one in DC @ the National Museum of the American Indian every year when I play tourist for a day. Another great resource that I've found on post Eastern Agricultural Complex foodways is Buffalo Bird Woman's book written in 1917, "Agriculture of the Hidatsa Indian". It explains the growing, harvesting, preparation, and storage techniques of their main crops. Very interesting book & I would highly recommend it: https://archive.org/details/agricultureofhid02wils/page/n9/m...
atebyagrue··on Linux on the Framework Laptop
Yep. Assuming you're using GRUB, then that last post is the recommended solution.
atebyagrue··on Linux on the Framework Laptop
Same here. I never... NEVER do first run of anything, but I firmly believed in the business model, rolled the dice, and received my $1200 i7 DIY kit. Sold my 3 month old XPS-13 and haven't looked back. Deep sleep and fingerprint reader were the only things that didn't work out of the box, and the implementation (if you take a look at the forum) is trivial. I would definitely recommend it to folks.
atebyagrue··on Ask HN: I am a coder and I am thinking of buying Dell XPS 13. What do you think?
I got one in 2020 at the start of covid for coding. Ultimately, I just sold it and ended up replacing it with a 13" MacBook Air a couple months ago. The main reasons were: the case flexes when you pick it up by the corner causing annoying errant mouse clicks, the 4k screen did not have the battery life as advertised (a lower resolution screen would have remedied this, but I had no clue going in), several times it threw missing OS error message coming awake from sleep or updates, and the RAM is now soldered on the motherboard. One of the main reasons I went with the Dell was due to an older XPS 15 that I had and I did several repairs & upgrades myself. I debated getting a ThinkPad, but I went with a Mac because there was a chance I might be getting into iOS development. YMMV.
atebyagrue··on A Nearly Extinct Bootlegger's Corn Gets a Second Shot (2018)
Ordered a pound of it this year and got some growing in the garden right now. Got it from a uncontaminated, heirloom, non-GMO grower in Alabama: https://raileyfarmandfield.com/shop/jimmy-red-corn-seed
atebyagrue··on Headless Chrome support in Cloud Functions and App Engine
Seconded. It works great. I've been using this in a lambda web collection project for the past year. Initial load times for headless chrome can be a bit slow, but iterative uses after it has launched are pretty fast.
