atarian··on Why Peter Thiel Searches for Reality-Bending ‘Secrets’
I thought the Nokia story was a pretty bad example because it’s not like they got everything else down perfectly.
atarian··on Reduced-hours software development engineer position at Amazon
Ah the good ol' carrot then stick tactic.
atarian··on Over-reliance on CGI in movies
That'll do dylan604. That'll do.
atarian··on Postman Now Supports gRPC
Thoughts on having native clients for Mac/Windows?
atarian··on Cruise is opening driverless cars to the public in San Francisco
I'll believe it when it actually happens. I signed up for Waymo in SF last year and still haven't gotten any updates for that.
atarian··on The New York Times buys Wordle
Who could have predicted a game with no strings attached would end up selling for so much.
atarian··on Vim Galore: everything you need to know about Vim
Do you have any experience with using cscope on other languages like Java?
atarian··on The Block Protocol
Ohh I get it. It's basically Docker/shipping containers for content.
atarian··on Buy things, not experiences
Anyone else noticing this trend of telling people what to do in the headline?
atarian··on Ask HN: Gmail account security
I've seen this a lot with incognito mode too. I think Google just deals a large penalty for "clean" devices.
atarian··on No amount of alcohol is good for the heart, says World Heart Federation
Glad to see them calling it out but let’s be honest.. we all knew it was BS.
atarian··on Rich: A Python library for rich text and formatting in the terminal
It looks like Fira Code.
atarian··on Simple.css – A classless CSS framework
This is really interesting. I’d like to see it handle layouts like sidebars (aside).
atarian··on Revisiting why hyperlinks are blue
typos are red

hyperlinks are blue

browsers like cookies

and so do you

atarian··on The medieval habit of ‘two sleeps’
Funny how they call it a nightcap, but ends up doing the complete opposite.
atarian··on Switching to a four-day workweek (2021)
4 day work week is the new remote.
atarian··on Are cryptocurrencies to blame for high GPU prices?
One of the craziest videos I saw last year was a mob of people rushing a Micro Center to get their hands on a 3080 TI: https://youtu.be/UNcx9JdC9VM?t=239
atarian··on Papers We Love
Any have any tips for getting started on reading a paper? It’s like reading something in a different language.
atarian··on Amateur archaeologist in Switzerland unearths 2k-year-old Roman dagger
I wonder what archaeologists 2000 years from now will unearth as news-worthy.
atarian··on Ask HN: Has Google search become quantitatively worse?
I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but when I also look for technical stuff I see a lot of Stackoverflow copy-cats on the first page.
atarian··on What really happened at the Millennium Tower?
When I was looking at SF real estate I was surprised to discover nearly half the housing market was built on landfill. And surprisingly few of those buildings are built on bedrock.
atarian··on Show HN: Mako – a full Bitcoin implementation in C
can something like this actually participate in the real bitcoin network or does everyone have to run the same client?
atarian··on Used car market gets even more bizarre
So is this a good time to sell my car if I don't really use it or should I hold onto it?
atarian··on An Epic future for SPJ
Timestamp?
atarian··on Your sex toy might be spying on you
Isn't that part of the fun for this audience?
atarian··on Jack Dorsey mocks Mark Zuckerberg's metaverse plan, saying it's dystopian
A few days ago I randomly read about how Zuckerberg tried to serve Dorsey a goat he killed. Seeing their names in the headline just made me think about it again:

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/24/mark-zuckerberg-once-killed-...

atarian··on California tried to save the nation from tax filing, then Intuit stepped in
https://archive.md/v2lhW
atarian··on Former Netflix executive convicted of receiving bribes from contractors
I thought that was very interesting too. Especially when you pointed out that tweet from Alexis.
atarian··on Working Multiple Jobs
I know people who do this, but I can't help but feel like people are glossing over how stressful this kind of situation is. Not only do you have to stress about two sets of responsibilities and coworkers, you also have to stress about keeping those two things separate.
atarian··on A proposal for adding a pipe operator to JavaScript
> Why are there so many proposals trying to force alien syntax into JS from "functional" languages?

People want to leave their mark on something big. It's a form of status.
