The key is getting the major game engines to support these standards which is what my startup is working on.
We’re currently focusing on bringing WebGPU + WebXR + improved WASM support so real-time 3D apps and games can be deployed to end users wherever they are, no walled gardens required. It’s also the path to the metaverse, which needs to be built on open standards and protocols in order to be truly accessible to all, and not vendor-locked by an entity that seeks to own it all like Meta (FB).

Not to mention all that sweet, sweet game developer data and owning one of the most popular social multiplayer games out there today.
The metaverse needs to be interoperable above all else, and this is unachievable with the equivalent of native, vendor locked apps controlled by an entity. The web already does this, as every site is governed by standards like HTML and HTTP which are consistent everywhere, on every device.
WebGPU, WebXR, WebAssembly, and WebTransport are the key foundational technologies to this future online space. Our startup Wonder is assembling tools to empower developers and non-technical creators alike to build and deploy immersive websites using native game engines like Unreal Engine, that allow for immersive virtual storefronts, hangout spaces for chatting with friends and family, collaboration with coworkers, or jump into a game or interactive experience like a concert.
Why the web, you might ask? Because no owns it. There's no 30% cut to give Apple or Facebook for accessing it.

Not to mention instant cross-platform availability across PC/Mac/Android and iOS. Even Xbox supports WebGL2 via the new Chromium Edge they shipped on there recently.
Combined with compression, you can get players into desktop-quality games in WASM in seconds on most computers.
Long term goal is to disrupt Steam and the App Stores.
We're also working on WebXR support to enable UE VR apps on the web. If anyone is interested and wants to learn more, you can join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/zUSZ3T8
Near native performance, players can join with just a link, and no 30% cut that developers have to deal with.
Facebook does not have a game engine and it is not currently a 3D-first company, and it makes sense that it will need one to underpin all of the content that will need to be made for the metaverse, by creators.
That's because we already have it today with the web, but it's primarily based on a flat 2D model. WebGPU, WebXR, and WebAssembly are going to replace the photo, text, and video sites you use currently into 3D spatial ones that you can experience and live in. We'll have the ability to shop in virtual storefronts both for our avatars and for real life goods, chat with others in whatever environment we want with customizable surroundings, and of course browse worlds created by others with easy to use tools.
This is the vision my team at Wonder is building, so that any game engine can export complex spatial content to the browser, at near native performance. The web is powerful because it's cross-platform by default, and it "just works everywhere".
No 30% from walled gardens either!

Get lost.
It's obvious Facebook sees the metaverse as the next big platform, and they want to own it the way Apple and Google own mobile today.
