ashildr··on Employee’s unwanted birthday party nets him $450k after lawsuit
> With ever-increasing incidents of workplace violence, Brazil said, the verdict sets a dangerous precedent for employers and employees that unless physical violence occurs, workplace violence is acceptable.

In this case the company forced an employee against his expressed will to be the center of attention of a “party” and triggered his condition. This IS violence - from the side of the employer.

ashildr··on Acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology – UK
So you are saying that children with underlying health conditions are at a higher risk for MIS-C and / or this hepatitis than the rest?
ashildr··on Acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology – UK
Well, PIMS / MIS-C at least sometimes seems to affect the liver:

„Acute hepatitis is a prominent presentation of the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children: a single-center report“ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7655704/

Maybe having COVID19 is not a good idea in general, even for children.

ashildr··on Scientists are worried about the W Boson: 'Something is amiss'
> Why (aside from creating jobs) is it good to discover that the universe is more complicated than we knew, or that we were wrong?

Because this would give us hints to new degrees of freedom in the current models that seem to contradict each other but otherwise work extremely well in their respective their domains. Finding a crack in those hermetically closed models would be wonderful.

ashildr··on Emory Univ. restricts WiFi for students noncompliant with booster requirements
If you study anything related to medical science in Germany you already have to be vaccinated or immune against measles. I’m not sure if it was required, but I remember that I was vaccinated against hepatitis in that context, too.

As a relative of a not-completely-healthy person working at a German university, who can’t avoid contact to students, I don’t see a problem in requiring students to be vaccinated and boostered.

The risk that someone who is vaccinated and boostered is at any point in time spreading infectious SARS-CoV-2 is lower, than if they are not.

And personally I feel as if the risk that someone who does not want to be vaccinated does not follow the rest of common hygiene standards is high, too.

Want to enjoy civilization? Be a part of civilization.

(Hell, there even seems to be a strong relation between “drives like an idiot” and “can’t be bothered to wear a mask in the bakery”.)

ashildr··on Tell HN: iOS Signal eats your disk space
AFAIK the storage is encrypted using (a key derived from) a unique device key in the secure enclave and thus the storage is tied to the physical device. Further keys are generated using the Passphrase and the unique device key, so they are tied to the user and the device.

The application can chose per file:

* Encrypted when locked: NSFileProtectionComplete

* Encrypted until first unlock: NSFileProtectionCompleteUntilFirstUserAuthentication

* Encrypted unless used by the applications background tasks: NSFileProtectionCompleteUnlessOpen

I think the keys used for file encryption are unique per application and then again per file, but I didn’t find information on this.

ashildr··on GitHub Incident
Thank you. From what I know direct updates to the next major releases of gitlab are only supported from relatively recent releases. I guess that’s what caught you.

We’ve been updating about as soon as an update is released for a while now, with very good results. (I’d rather have to restore a backup or a snapshot than to be running without the latest security fixes. If gitlab is down for an hour (didn’t happen in ~3 years) at least all developers have their local repo.)

ashildr··on Arguing Without Warning
1) have a look at the beautiful dicussion on the “Mold effect”. Here’s a pointer to begin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hx2LEqTQT4E

2) altruism exists

3) if you briefly try to talk to the author you _may_ avoid misunderstanding their idea and thus less time is wasted.

3) being proven wrong is great. Being right is boring.

ashildr··on I have quit my job
May the squirrels lead your way !-)
ashildr··on GitHub Incident
> my GitLab install absolutely self destructed itself

That’s frightening, we’ve been using it for multiple years now. It’s running fine and the only short downtime is every few weeks for the update.

What happened to your instance?

ashildr··on Just say no to :latest
> you have InfoSec muscling in and demanding, by the most coercive way possible, that Thou Shalt Not Do Your Job Without Bowing Before Me.

InfoSec is not optional.

ashildr··on Just say no to :latest
There are containers that I want ASAP to be updated to the latest version which likely contains all known security fixes. I consider the risk of missing an update for a - then public - security problem greater than the risk of getting a new, still unknown security risk. While I am trying to, I will not have the time to be really on top of all updates at all times. And I am more comfortable with a container breaking than with a container missing an important update.

There are aspects where reproducibility is key, but thats only a subset of all containers on our network. And on my home network it’s none at all.

ashildr··on Omicron variant more resistant to vaccine but causes less severe Covid: study
„the flu vaccine“?

Which one?

ashildr··on Tesla Update Allows Video Games While Driving, and the Feds Aren’t Happy
In my country you are not allowed to physically interact with a smartphome while driving. The cars entertainment system is not off limits, yet. This will be a problem.
ashildr··on Ask HN: Why is everything changing too fast?
I’m your age and of similar profession with a known history of doing software development. Having been a nerd since very early age I come to the conclusion that

0) I am growing older and I may get more conservative 1) I used a lot of products that evolved to a local optimum but I see a lot of them being thrown back into a evolutionary state they already passed a decade ago. Maybe to eveolve better, but I have my doubts. 2) Everything is bloating now. Instead of a collection of good tools interacting I have now 3+ ways of opening an Excel-File someone shared in Teams. All of them are broken and Teams is broken, too.

I feel as if the excellent wrenches I have been using for 20+ years are growing tumors in the form of a can opener. All to please people who never used a wrench or a can opener before. And production of the original wrenches is cancelled. Over night.

Next time I need a wrench it may be made of felt, because fedoras are en vogue and the mad hatter has to sink venture capital into expanding his business.

(Funfact: In German you could make up the very valid and understandable, but still strange word “dosenöffnerförmige Tumore” )

ashildr··on Ask HN: How are you taking care of you eyes?
Supplements may have an effect, so for example taking beta carotene while being a smoker may be counterproductive:

> Among current smokers, beta-carotene supplementation was found to be significantly associated with an increased risk of lung cancer (odds ratio [OR], 1.24; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.10-1.39).

[Beta-carotene in multivitamins and the possible risk of lung cancer among smokers versus former smokers: a meta-analysis and evaluation of national brands](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18429004/)

ashildr··on Classification of Omicron (B.1.1.529): SARS-CoV-2 Variant of Concern
It is called variant of *concern* not variant of *panic*. So while it may be wise to stop travelling (European here) it is absolutely useless to speculate about the doom it brings. Doom is what we already do with ineffective measures to fight Delta (German here).
ashildr··on Willingness to look stupid
The author considers himself to be extremely smart. I don‘t think I‘d enjoy their company.
ashildr··on The Off-Grid Laws of Every State in America
So in the land of the free you can’t use solar from your own roof because that would be communism.
ashildr··on Babies are full of microplastics, new research shows
Adding microplastics to food on purpose would be illegal in the EU because there have been no extensive studies about the safety of microplastics as a food ingredient. So I don’t feel as if we should get used to microplastics inf food - and in out bodies - by accident.
ashildr··on Ask HN: Why Bother with All This?
My point was not “if you are depressed, just start feeling lucky”. OP was writing about himself disapproving his parent’s relationship arrangements. This aspect is not depression, but entitlement.
ashildr··on Delays aren’t good enough – Apple must abandon its surveillance plans
Google: We scan all the data you upload to us and store it unencrypted so we can scan it again if we feel like it.

Apple: We scan only the data you decide to upload to us before you do so and store it encrypted so nobody, even us can see what it is.

Press / FBI: Apple bad!

ashildr··on Google's New AI Photo Upscaling Tech Is Jaw-Dropping
So the system is solving a high-res inpainting puzzle that - if filtered - looks similar to a low-res input? The results are impressive because our brain can‘t do this quickly. They contain absolutely no additional information but they _seem_ to do, so this may lead to much harm.
ashildr··on Ask HN: Why Bother with All This?
Really, your parents have been in a stable triple relationship for 15 years and you feel like you are entitled to disapprove of this? You are a 30 year old man today, not a 15 year old boy!
ashildr··on Ask HN: Why Bother with All This?
As someone coming from a broken family, let me tell you that if your dad found a second mum and those three live together peacefully it‘s a good result and just none of your business. Your parents so not exist to fulfill your expectations, you are a 30 year old person, not a child. By the way, using your wife as an excuse for your moral expectations is childish. “feel free to downvote into forever“ is super whiney and passive aggressive.

You are young, and - to me - you seem to be very self focussed. I think you should consider yourself lucky to have a job and a partner. Consider changing jobs if something more fulfilling is within reach that will not burn you out.

And see a therapist to help you sort yourself out. It really helps to understand oneself better.

ashildr··on Toxic ‘forever chemicals’ contaminate indoor air at worrying levels
Maybe it’s only in sports apparel over here?
ashildr··on Toxic ‘forever chemicals’ contaminate indoor air at worrying levels
> from "safe until proven otherwise" to "unsafe until (independently) proven safe"

That’s about how the EU does it.

ashildr··on Toxic ‘forever chemicals’ contaminate indoor air at worrying levels
Yes, this is disappointing.
ashildr··on Toxic ‘forever chemicals’ contaminate indoor air at worrying levels
This is really strange - I’m in Germany and I hear for the first time that underwear is treated like this.

None of the brand I wear (HOM) seem to be and I don’t remember that being mentioned on any pack of underwear I purchased the last 40 years.

Is it an US thing?

(and yes, I’m posting about my underwear on hacker news. weird.)

ashildr··on Australian Police get online account takeover, data disruption powers
I really wonder how all of this will work out once we get the first brain implants. Mobile phones are coming close to that but imagine police can add/remove/tamper with your memory at will…
