ashildr··on Fingers wrinkle the same way every time they’re in the water too long
IIRC even LASER was seen as a novely demonstration of quite an obscure effect…
ashildr··on ChatGPT Saved My Life (no, seriously, I'm writing this from the ER)
Maybe someone with a really interesting voice?
ashildr··on ChatGPT Saved My Life (no, seriously, I'm writing this from the ER)
Yes, you should have a medical tricorder. It’s a scandal these don't exist.
ashildr··on In a first, EU Court fines EU for breaching own data protection law
The EU can comply with its own regulations, it’s just that EU citizens (sometimes) can force it into compliance if it does not. That’s a nice feature.
ashildr··on America's first bird flu death reported in Louisiana
So your point is that even with a IFR of less than 2.6% bodies had to be stored in freeze trucks? Ugh.
ashildr··on No need to email me about Cisco AnyConnect
I really like this one because it’s a valid question about an odd thing that would take a while to answer properly:

> I have a huge text on my sat nav in my car where, among other things, your email address can be seen?

> Can you tell me what this is all about?

ashildr··on Google's iOS app now injects links on third-party websites that go to Search
So Google is rewriting what your online banking site is showing on the fly?
ashildr··on Northvolt goes from Europe battery promise to crisis
“I am sure” of many things I have no idea about, too. It’s called Dunning Kruger effect.
ashildr··on Scientific American's departing editor and the politicization of science
If you don‘t seriously talk about politics but consider it sports and entertainment and about “winning”, you get Dr. Oz and RFKjr to decide about your health and Matt Gaetz overseeing justice.

Politics is everywhere and it has to be everywhere but politics is not Joe Rogan or Fox news. That‘s propaganda.

ashildr··on DNA testing company vanishes along with its customers' genetic data
That’s an interesting point to add to the feature list of a future product: “Proof” of deletion that is plausible to laypeople. Of course one has to delete according to the law, too, but that plausible proof may get rid of a lot of support calls escalating to your level.
ashildr··on Scientific American's departing editor and the politicization of science
Interestingly the only people who are not supposed to “push a political agenda” are usually accused of being “woke” in one of the next sentences. “Keeping politics out” brought the US - and the world - Trump, two times. Most things in life are political.
ashildr··on Maybe Bluesky has "won"
> Threads was immediately political and I assume bluesky is too.

Life is political. Believing that it’s not only means that someone who is also pretending that life is not political will make the rules.

ashildr··on Tesla has the highest fatal accident rate of all auto brands, study finds
Oh, you’ll be hearing it for much longer. Greetings from Germany.
ashildr··on Costco’s butter recall, explained
What is the average life expectancy in India compared to the US?
ashildr··on 200k subscribers flee 'Washington Post' after Bezos blocks Harris endorsement
The US will stay the country that voted for Trump (and is close to doing this again) and the Washington Post will stay the newspaper where the billionaire owner decides what is published.

None of this can be repaired for a generation.

ashildr··on The global surveillance free-for-all in mobile ad data
Her name was Breonna Taylor, she was an emergency medical technician until police shot her. #sayHerName

ashildr··on Apple may stop producing Vision Pro by the end of 2024
> What are you doing that actually benefits from gluing the screen to your face?

For a start you get multiple very large virtual screens that are a lot bigger than the screen in a notebook. This to me is an interesting use case.

ashildr··on All software in EU under product liability from 2026
Your one man company definitely is not safe, you’ll be responsible for all damages done by the full stack you’re providing. Each library / OS / whatever software is part of your product. Yes, this is bad.
ashildr··on ArchiveBox is evolving: the future of self-hosted internet archives
I know it’s a lot of work but this would be great and it may give readers a deeper understanding into security in general.
ashildr··on ArchiveBox is evolving: the future of self-hosted internet archives
Even when I‘m logged out I expect at least information on my geographical location to seep into the archive via URLs addressing specific CDN endpoints or similar mechanisms.
ashildr··on ArchiveBox is evolving: the future of self-hosted internet archives
I was about to post a link to the same URL but archived using singleFile, which looks like the original at amazon. I didn‘t because I realized that I have absolutely no idea what additional information would be hidden in the file. In the worst case any component sent by Amazon and archived into the file may contain PII, even if I am “logged out“.

I‘m not saying that singleFile is bad in any way, I‘m using it a lot on multiple devices, but I‘m not sure whether sharing archives is a good idea™.

ashildr··on Microsoft's new Outlook client moves your email to the cloud (2023)
So even if your company has its own mailserver everyone is locked out of email if some Microsoft services are down, again. Brilliant.
ashildr··on Show HN: Konty – A Balsamiq-alternative lo-fi wireframe tool for modern apps
It’s an abstraction that makes people focus on the part that is relevant for the discussion at hand, and not on implementation details.
ashildr··on When EV startups shut down, will their cars still work?
Too bad if the DRM-server that knows that you paid for Apple CarPlay/Google Auto is turned off…
ashildr··on GitHub disabled adguard filters repository
Using adblockers is a safety measure. Since ads on websites today are known to spread malware and the ad industry has not been able or is not interested in fixing this I don‘t see any value in discussing your idea.
ashildr··on More and more German trains are not allowed to enter Switzerland
That‘s what we got for privatization and many years of „conservative“ ministers of transport and public infrastructure. Just wait for the first bridge to fail with a train or a car on it and the calls for public-private partnerships… (Writing this on a moderately ICE-train)
ashildr··on Uncomfortable truth: How close is "positivity culture" to delusion and denial?
Perfumes have been used for thousands of years and shops are investing into the right aromas to make their customers buy more. I wouldn’t be surprised if the right aromas can have a positive influence on a patients mood, compared to “the uplifting smell of a hospital ward”.
ashildr··on 3D Printable PC/NAS Cases
No shielding at all?
ashildr··on iTerm2 3.5.0
Can all the Helen Lovejoys angry about this nonsensical feature please just stop using iTerm? iTerm would lose a single digit number of users and $0 of income.
ashildr··on iTerm2 3.5.0
It’s a terminal emulator and it has access to a local shell. Your scenario trusts the junior/temp with a shell.
