ashildr··on Comparing desktop development tools, Qt, Electron and macOS Native
I’m not trying to rain on your parade, but: There’s a market for an application that encodes/decodes files base64? And one of the selling propositions is that it’s running locally?

ashildr··on Dieter Rams turns 92 – Stream "Rams" for free May 20 and 21
Thanks for the info, though I’ve been interested in Dieter Rams’ design most of my life I just watched that documentation for the first time. It was some time well spent.
ashildr··on US releases sealed Brazil orders to X, shedding light on account suspensions
I seriously have no idea what you mean by this.
ashildr··on Multiple Displays on a Mac Sucks
That’s a good point, it may help me if begin to experience similar problems. (Which may be tomorrow, because I mentioned that I don’t remember having those problems.) I’m currently using a thunderbolt adaptor with HDMI and DP, so I guess that makes it pretty easy for the OS to consistently identify the displays.
ashildr··on Multiple Displays on a Mac Sucks
I currently don’t use Fedora but Arch and FreeBSD besides from a number of Apple and Android devices, does that mean - in your simple world view - that I’m not in love with a single company but polyarmorous? I have some professional experience with Solaris, HP-UX and Domain/OS, which of them is the kinkiest? I bet it was Domain/OS, but nobody does it anymore, it’s way too weird and smells funny. Necrophilia it would be, I guess. (And I’m not even sure about the MacOSX Developer Preview CD that I found in some box the other day, using Apple must be some resurrection fetish…)

Pseudo psychological analytics of OS choices, coming from people who have neither an idea on other people’s use cases nor on their experiences are so disappointing and boring. Can we please invent a “-splaining” term for it?

ashildr··on Multiple Displays on a Mac Sucks
I seriously have none of these problems which makes me wonder what‘s wrong with me / my perception. (Intel and Apple Silicon MBPs, two external Dell Displays.)

As a Mac user of decades I rarely use the dock though, but mostly shortcuts and spotlight.

Free speech as long as you don‘t hurt the master‘s feelings.
ashildr··on SeaMonkey All-in-One Internet Application Suite
Does it really make any difference for software like this whether it‘s running in emulation or native?
ashildr··on End of the Line? Saudi Arabia to scale back plans for desert megacity
A tram or even regular trains would not have to be very fast for those distances and for faster trains we already have the technology to lean into curves - it‘s quite common in Europe. And why not build a radial subway to get on to the opposing side of a circular city? (And why build this nonsense in a desert at all?)
ashildr··on Disillusioned Businesses Discovering That AI Kind of Sucks
Nothing, for now.
ashildr··on Disillusioned Businesses Discovering That AI Kind of Sucks
LLM are not “AI”.
ashildr··on United Arab Emirates is using cloud seeding tech to make it rain
No, I didn‘t intend to make an argument, I was asking a genuine question because I‘m trying to understand the perspective on the world of people who consider LLM a kind of „source“. To me OP reads like “according to my Ouija board” and I’m frightened by the idea that people on HN are using the output of LLM as “quotable facts” (and not as a tool to start further research outside of it, which would be fine IMO.) I’d like to know if the poster had any doubts using ChatGPT as a source of fact to base their calculations on, when they obviously had access to the internet with all necessary sources to properlt calculate an answer for this basic question.
ashildr··on Neuralink patient controls games by thinking during interview
From what I understand the headset can be configured to be used without moving the head and even to use eye tracking, only, instead of the minimal finger gestures.

ashildr··on United Arab Emirates is using cloud seeding tech to make it rain
So your reference is “According to ChatGPT”. Did you feel anything when typing this?
ashildr··on Neuralink patient controls games by thinking during interview
I‘ve been wondering if Apple‘s AR Headset would be a useful tool for people in similar situations. Did you have a chance to try it, yet?
ashildr··on Major medical provider drops patient for not having a Android or iOS device
I was about to write a snarky comment about calling a taxi cab by writing a letter instead of using a landline phone but then I remembered that we used to have public phones…

ashildr··on Company forgets why they exist after 11-week migration to Kubernetes (2020)
So they were basically removable “Post it” stickies representing units of time spent on the customer’s case represented by the specific sheet, which were collected in the customer’s file in the end? Do you remember how you kept track of who did the specific unit of work? I.e. did each employee have their own sheet for each customer to collect their stickies on? Was there any color coding, any information written on the stickies?

I’m interested in those paper based techniques because I learned over the years that physical representation of abstract things helps a lot of people keeping a general overview in projects.

ashildr··on Ask HN: How do I stop being such a doomer?
> I broke into the tech world around the time ChatGPT came out, so the job market is pretty rough for newer developers like me.

I’m approaching twice your age and may be quite disconnected from the challenges young devs are facing in your area, but though I have tried to find much use in the current breed of code generators I find it very hard to believe that they have a strong impact on the job market. Can someone enlighten me?

ashildr··on Company forgets why they exist after 11-week migration to Kubernetes (2020)
That pull-off system sounds extremely interesting, was it a common way of time tracking back then? Do you have any pictures by accident?
ashildr··on Generating Expressive Portrait Videos with Audio2Video
Yes, but we don’t have an accessible vetting infrastructure for this. I don’t know anything about “ShamelessC” so I have no idea if a video of Hillary Clinton drinking the blood of children should be trusted or not.
ashildr··on Generating Expressive Portrait Videos with Audio2Video
By using some tricks we already have computer generated 3D models. I don’t see why we would not get 3D models of complete videos, toon, especially if state actors with a lot of money are interested in that.
ashildr··on Generating Expressive Portrait Videos with Audio2Video
The owners of “journalism” already decided that vetting is irrelevant and costs their money, so they have been mostly routing around that part of the process for quite a while. Also: Quite a large number of people already left common reality and followed propaganda into cloud-cuckoo-land. But right now it would be still possible to in theory disprove a lot of the nonsense. This will completely change and the consequences can’t be overlown. I think that we need an automated vetting infrastructure, a kind of web of trust for recorded media, that helps to track down a recording to the original source and decide whether we trust the path that is leading there. But I don’t have any hope. We already have fake phone calls from “the president” and doctored photos, imagine what the next elections will look like. Hunter Biden will personally admit having a threesome with the Hillary and Soros, sponsored by RTV.

So who put the wedding album into the corpus?
ashildr··on Generating Expressive Portrait Videos with Audio2Video
Maybe someone more on the autistic spectrum here can tell if they feel that the facial expressions are “right”? The examples are too convincing to my brain to properly focus on analyzing that part.
ashildr··on Generating Expressive Portrait Videos with Audio2Video
This is becoming frightening now. Maybe we need to start to cryptographically sign original sources and require others to do so to prove if something is a real recording? I can spot some details that don’t seem to be moving ‘right’ according to physics, but this is extremely convincing.

ashildr··on Can confirm a current Broadcom VMware customer went from $8M renewal to $100M
Interesting bet. From now on no one in their right mind will BEGIN using VMware. Whatever new companies will be founded, none of them will choose VMware, neither will growing companies switch to VMware.
