ashchristopher··on Lessons learned defying Joel Spolsky with Django
Basically if you modify data in a transaction, add a task to the queue that relies on that data, and the worker pulls the task off the queue BEFORE the transaction is committed, then the task tries to access data that doesn't exist in the database yet.
ashchristopher··on Show HN: Courtside.me
I hope these keys are fake... https://github.com/myusuf3/courtside/blob/master/courtside/k...
ashchristopher··on Backbone.js Fundamentals
I think part of the problem is also that Backbone made some backwards incompatible changes as the framework developed. I found that a lot of the backbone tutorials were out of date - the &Yet blog had a bunch of good tutorials but were quickly out of date, and the posts were never revisited.
ashchristopher··on Google Bar: The next stage in Google redesign
What would you suggest in its place? As their number of 'core' products increase, it is harder to come up with a unifying UI that isn't menu based.

(Not a troll - seriously want to know about other UI alternatives).

ashchristopher··on Ask HN: Desperate Python Hacker Seeking Help and Suggestions
There are a bunch of big python/django shops in Toronto... more than I can count on two hands... and they are all hiring.

Yes to statics and dynamics.
ashchristopher··on America's 10 Least Stressful Jobs includes Programming & Software Engineering.
In Canada, part of the distinction is that Software Engineers are real (with a ring) engineers. A lot of their education is in engineering principles - same classes as Electrical, Mechanical and Computer engineers.

I know in the states Software Engineer describes most developers. How many Twitter engineers are actual engineers? Exactly.

ashchristopher··on Stanford CS enrollment increase "downright scary"
The CS parts may not be directly useful, but there are other benefits. Things like organization and logic are useful for people to be familiar with.
ashchristopher··on Fundamental Guidelines Of E-Commerce Checkout Design
I have never seen month represented using the month name - at least not in Canada.

Don't know what its like in other areas of the world. Perhaps we just need to use some critical thought after reading and interpret the points based on our markets.

I mean, it isn't a hard an fast rule - they are just giving some suggestions - and I think they were pretty spot on.

ashchristopher··on Is it possible for web developer to work in a bank?
So your question should be, can a PHP developer get a job in a bank. And the answer is... banks hire Java developers.

Why would banks hire someone without the proper skillset?

ashchristopher··on Is it possible for web developer to work in a bank?
What is your definition of Web Developer?

The web is a platform - it shouldn't matter what the language is.

ashchristopher··on Ask HN: Is unobtrusive javascript/gracefully degradation important anymore?
In this case, it is an app site. I was sorting thinking along the same idea.
ashchristopher··on UBB overturned - Canada no longer biggest internet loser.
The fact that you can buy "overage insurance" is telling and shows that UBB isn't about capacity, but instead a new revenue stream. If there was a legitimate concern regarding bandwidth and infrastructure, insurance wouldn't be offered and there would be hard limits to usage.
ashchristopher··on UBB overturned - Canada no longer biggest internet loser.
I hope it leads to change in the future. We still have the fundamental flaw that third party ISP's need to piggy back on the big 3.
ashchristopher··on Canadians Just Became World's Biggest Internet Losers.
The real kick in the junk is that the infrastructure Bell owns was paid for by the Canadian taxpayers when Bell operated as a crown corporation.

Not sure if the Rogers infrastructure was publicly funded (I suspect it was in part).

ashchristopher··on Clients you should avoid
Don't wait till the end of the project to get paid?

Most contracts I have worked have milestones where people are paid on initial acceptance of the project (say 35%) and paid on further milestones.

ashchristopher··on Pizza And Ramen Are Hurting Your Startup
It's expensive, but it works. Also, there is the social factor. You have an entire team at a Crossfit gym who you work out with that expect you to be there, and push you while you are there.

In this case, peer-pressure is a good thing.

ashchristopher··on AOL Acquires Personal Profile Startup About.Me
Before I read the article, I was thinking talent acquisition... now... I don't know what to make of it.

Sensationalism perhaps?

ashchristopher··on Bye Bye Github
Gitosis is great, however I like Gitolite much better (ironically enough, hosted by GitHub - http://github.com/sitaramc/gitolite). Per branch permissions, and a much more intuitive project management.
