asdfqwertzxcv··on First-in-human implantation of bionic device to halt Crohn's disease (2023)
Have Chron's with stricturing and anything more than a quarter cup of corn, popcorn, pineapple or leafy greens would bring me to my knees in about 5-8 hours. Nuts are a little hit or miss, I need to chew them up really well and not eat them on an empty stomach and I'm good for a few handfuls.

I tell people that if it looks the same coming out as it goes in, I can't have that banging around my guts.

Any fast or junk foods are totally fine since they're mostly low fiber, but high fiber foods are mostly okay, too.

Due to my strictures and the nightmare stories I've read from people online, I specifically eat foods that are mushy or smoothies and soups. Basically, I'm pre-digesting the foods before they're eaten so they're easier to pass through a narrowing intestional wall and it has worked well for years now. Only time I've had issues are when I eat too quickly, too much at once or have one of my problem foods.

I'm also on a biologic, which made all the difference after being untreated for about 6 months, which I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

asdfqwertzxcv··on The Reddits
I've been seeing talk on a few servers I moved to about what their "next move" will be when Discord pulls more BS. So they're actively thinking and talking about how to keep the community going longer term. I hope they circle back to forums. They're so much better in virtually every way and can be setup to have livechat, reddit-style posts, you name it.
asdfqwertzxcv··on The Reddits
That and some moved to forums. I didn't get a complete 1 for 1 of all the subreddits I used to frequent, but most of the main ones I used have moved to one of those solutions.

asdfqwertzxcv··on Staring at a Wall: Embracing Deliberate Boredom
Very similar to what I started working on last year. It’s been working extremely well and one of the best things I’ve done for myself. I talk about it here: https://rnilo.com/making-life-boring/
asdfqwertzxcv··on My experience taking Tesla to court about FSD
This. The reason I stopped using FSD was due to traveling at speed on the biggest freeway running through Southern California when it randomly slammed on the breaks for no reason, until I quickly disengaged it. I’m not talking a gentle slow down. It went from 75 to 35 and all passengers getting thrown against their seatbelts and the car behind having to slam on their breaks hard to avoid rear ending me. First time, I thought it was a fluke. 2nd time, along the same route but a completely different place, the car behind had to swerve into the emergency lane to avoid running into me. I vowed never to use it again and join any class action lawsuit against the company regarding this. It’s dangerous AF on its best day.

Driver assist, however, is actually great and perfect for stop and go traffic. But damn that FSD is a literal killer.

Pretty much what Nixon wanted to achieve by starting relations with them, but it got derailed when new administrations came in and didn’t follow through.
asdfqwertzxcv··on Purism Launches New Secure Librem 11 Tablet
Even better: I sent back an unopened Librem5 because they said I’d get a refund. 10 months later and no refund after monthly emails, including cc’ing the executive team and their legal counsel. I’ll be filing FTC and state AG complaints when I get the time. Absolutely do not ever buy from them, they’re scam artists.
asdfqwertzxcv··on Millions of people see staying home and cleaning as their idea of a good time

Love Shiey and he also goes on quite a few trips with this guy (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8iPVSFr42KUFf8DKsmnvSw) who is very well educated and more philosophical and artistic than Shiey. Like them both a lot, but they're different flavors of the same genre.
asdfqwertzxcv··on Ask HN: What was the best software that you used during 2022?
Have had the exact same experience. It’s been worth every penny!
asdfqwertzxcv··on Ask HN: What was the best software that you used during 2022?
Yes, it does.
asdfqwertzxcv··on How to Annotate Everything
This is similar to what you can do in the readwise app. It's been excellent!
asdfqwertzxcv··on Massachusetts recount flips state house election to Democrat by one vote
No, this is democracy in action :).
asdfqwertzxcv··on Show HN: Readwise Reader, an all-in-one reading app
Exact same experience for me. They’ve done a great job of combining all the disparate parts of the digital reading experience and it’s only been getting better over the months since the devs are extremely responsive to feedback and they implement changes quickly.
asdfqwertzxcv··on US Altered Himars Launchers to Keep Ukraine from Firing Missiles into Russia
The smart route is to do all of that, but still modify them to remove the possibilty of a rogue person or unit from doing it as well. Its called covering all bases. When the stakes are this high (nukes), you ensure there are no loose ends.
asdfqwertzxcv··on Ask HN: What do you want in a habit tracker?
Yes, I’d carry pen and paper or keep it in a notebook that is usually with me. The reason I mentioned pocketmod is because it could be folded down to a tiny booklet, which can easily slip into a pocket or wallet.
asdfqwertzxcv··on Ask HN: What do you want in a habit tracker?
> 2. A decent widget showing your streak of not breaking the chain.

>> It'll come. I initially wanted to focus on the core experience and remove tracking friction.

I use the widgets to specifically remove as much friction to start the habit set and keep the feedback loop constantly in front of me.

> 3. Timers for each habit item, which then allows you to mark as complete to auto start the next habit and timer, or pause if one is taking a little longer.

>> Interesting. It's the first time I come across timers for habits. How long have you been using timers? I'd love to hear if the timers stick around for you after a few months of tracking.

I’ve been using the pomodoro technique for years and habit timers definitely have that same feeling for me. If I’m still trying to instill the same habit set for more than 3 months, I’d consider the app/habit set a failure. I’m looking to start habits, ingrain them, then move onto creating new habit stacks once it becomes rote.

> 4. Syncs to multiple devices - watch, iPad, phone, etc. I see you can export out of the app but syncing would be helpful.

>> This one is currently supported by Flat Habits, though purposely hidden until it can be exposed more seamlessly. If you want to try it, first export to a location outside the app (maybe Documents directory?). Then import and select "in-place". Import from your iPad "in-place" also and you get the two syncing.

Thanks for that!

> 5. As someone noted in another comment: A way to export and/or print a habit tracker so as to get away from the phone and tech and only come back to log it on the device, should I choose to and snap a quick photo that gets OCR’ed to update the app stats. Maybe a pocketmod.com format could work?

>> Interesting idea, speciallyl using OCR to feed back into the app.

Would love to see this since it’s easy to do paper tracking but then there’s no way to integrate the data digitally without a whole other manual process, which is just too much. Melding offline and online would be killer in this space since, like someone noted elsewhere, one of the main habits I’d like to instill is to stop using the phone for everything. So it’s a bit of a catch-22 currently.

asdfqwertzxcv··on Ask HN: What do you want in a habit tracker?
As I’ve recently been testing a bunch of habit trackers for iOS, settling on Routinery for the past few weeks, there’s a few things that seem to be missing:

1. Privacy, subscription-less, tracking-less. Which you’ve covered.

2. A decent widget showing your streak of not breaking the chain. Most of the major habit tracking apps either have no widget or the widget is just to launch a routine set.

3. Timers for each habit item, which then allows you to mark as complete to auto start the next habit and timer, or pause if one is taking a little longer. I’ve found this creates a little more incentive to get them done in succession and want to click that done button even more.

4. Syncs to multiple devices - watch, iPad, phone, etc. I see you can export out of the app but syncing would be helpful.

5. As someone noted in another comment: A way to export and/or print a habit tracker so as to get away from the phone and tech and only come back to log it on the device, should I choose to and snap a quick photo that gets OCR’ed to update the app stats. Maybe a pocketmod.com format could work?

asdfqwertzxcv··on When Hammers Don’t Hammer
For me it’s been the opposite. I’m not a programmer or have a job that requires me to use anything but basic GUI’s or web services, so the hill to use anything without a GUI is quite high. I think what you do day-to-day for your vocation or how much free time you have to devote to learning these tools directly impacts your ability to utilize command line programs with ease or not.

I guess this article can be summed up by the old adage: “Use the tools you know.”

Interesting analysis and a level headed reasoning about the nuclear threat potentially being overblown.

Super ignorant take. SA's ruling class heavily depends on the US for literal protection. Unless they think they can go it alone, they're all dead within the year otherwise.
