asdfasvea··on Museum of Bad Art
The best general art museums I've ever gone to were 80% crap, 15% meh and 5% good. The average general art museum is 90% crap, 9% meh and 1% ok.

But that's the nature of the beast. You can't have a diverse collection where half the pieces are good to any individual. 1 person's opinion of great art is 99 other people's crap.

There really are very few pieces in the world where 90%+ of people agree they are great pieces of art.

asdfasvea··on SQL style guide by Simon Holywell
Agree. In my experience people use aliases to use aliases. They know them but don't understand them.

Aliases are the SQL equivalent of ternary operators. Are you trying to write clean code or are you trying to express to other people you know things?

I'm sure there's tons of simple ways to steer an automobile but if I don't see a wheel I'm not going anywhere in the thing.

Jesus Christ almighty give me a site I can use if you want me to absorb your content.

I'm not using a screen reader, I have javascript enabled, I have up to date chrome, yet somehow I can't navigate your artsy site. What do you think your non-standard navigation is adding that is worth the cost of pissing users off?

What do I click on? Where's the content? Why am I guessing how to use your site? Actually, I'm done guessing and clicking the back button to get off this horrible thing.

asdfasvea··on Move over BMI .Welcome BRI
Perfect is the enemy of great.

Oh no BMI gives weird results for 2% of the population, who by the way are acutely attuned to their bodies, so let's throw the whole thing out.

Health professionals need a polite way to start obesity conversations with patients and BMI gives them that. When you focus on the very narrow shortcomings of BMI you actually harm obese people by giving them a reason to disregard concrete measurements of their obesity.

asdfasvea··on The 4-chan Go programmer
Had a math teach full of pithy, paradoxical, sardonic and witty quotes. Told us that if we only take away one from his class is that you can never go wrong attributing an unknown quote to Mark Twain or Benjamin Franklin.
asdfasvea··on Pi calculation world record with over 202T digits
I've never understood why people have such a hard-on for the digits of pi.

I've met more than one pi braggart who expected me to marvel at their ability to recite digits, but couldn't answer 'what is pi though? Don't use numbers, use words'. And they just didn't know.

It's one of those weird domains we're people can possess deep knowledge and no understanding.

asdfasvea··on The loneliness of the low-ranking tennis player
Try as we have, we just couldn't stop 'literally' from turning into a synonym for 'figuratively'.
asdfasvea··on Covid Safety Measures Could Return If a Bird Flu Pandemic Is Declared
There's no political credibility. Don't mislead and scare people for their own good then blame them when they no longer listen to what you say.

Reminds me of the DARE program. Fill kids heads full of lies about how all drugs will ruin your life. Then they try pot and alcohol and realize your full of shit about those so you're probably lying about mdma, heroin and crack.

asdfasvea··on Ask HN: How to run an old-school mailing list?
You kids today and your new fangled 'old school' references.

As someone born before the cola wars, the title of this thread was very misleading.

asdfasvea··on Marilyn vos Savant and the Monty Hall Problem (2015)
Jeez, this thread should have it's own thread where we discuss it:

"Marilyn vos Savant and the Monty Hall Problem (2015) Problem (2024)"

That thread wouldn't be about the problem, or about the decades ago backlash to the correct answer about the problem, but about the backlash to how everyone in 2024 semantically picked apart the problem.

I lived though the initial backlash and it was annoyingly entertaining how high level mathematicians tried to show how she was wrong. Now everyone is trying to use semantics to show how they are right--or at least not wrong.

I don't know which is worse--pompous incorrectness (then) or pedantic semantics (now).

asdfasvea··on Responses to unicycling
I use mine to walk my dog and get nothing but amazement and joy from people of literally all ages. People over 4 years old smile, point and say 'that guys unicycling, awesome'. People 4 and under smile, point and say 'doggie, doggie doggie'.

Never a bad word, but I don't ride it like I'm an A-hole bicyclist.

>>>A large group of these people are having a revenue problem, not a spending problem

I walked out of college in the Great Recession with a 900/month student loan debt <<<

You didn't make it one sentence before you undermined your premise. Explain how a 900/month student loan payment isn't a result of a spending problem.
