asciimov··on The polar vortex is hitting the brakes
This was in the Texas Panhandle, temps this low are abnormal. Cows can survive this temps as long as they have adequate feed and water. They can endure high temps pretty well, again as long as they have water.
asciimov··on Not OK Cupid – A story of poor email address validation
And addresses, I even knew when he was sending his mistress nicer flowers than his wife.

I get other people’s email too, just this guy has been more prolific than others.

asciimov··on The polar vortex is hitting the brakes
0°F was the outside temperature with 40 mph winds (60mph gusts) the time I had to venture to the middle of an empty field to break the ice on water tank with a hatchet so cows could get water.
asciimov··on Not OK Cupid – A story of poor email address validation
Accidentally signing up once is a mistake. One person signing up for products, credit cards, unemployment, medical bills, television services, payday loans, mortgages, jobs with my email address over a 6 year period isn’t a mistake. This is some middle age dude in middle America.
asciimov··on Egg prices are soaring. Are backyard chickens the answer?
A few years ago 18 eggs was just under $2.50. Today that same 18 eggs is $9.36. If your family goes through a lot of eggs, it can have a significant impact on your budget.

For example, a family of 4 might use a dozen eggs a day for breakfast. End of the week that could be 6 dozen eggs. When prices were cheap that’s $15, but now that would be just under $60. Quiet a tough pill to swallow for those on a budget.

asciimov··on Egg prices are soaring. Are backyard chickens the answer?
There was a time in my life where our household of 2 was regularly going through 3 dozen eggs a week just for breakfast. Back then that would total $5 a week. Today that same amount of eggs are just under $20.

It’s not just the eggs, all grocery prices have gone up massively post covid. But eggs prices are easier to spot because they are super inflated thanks to bird flu, and are easy to understand as a necessity.

asciimov··on Gulf of America name change in the U.S.
It's not named for the Mexicans, it's named for the Aztec people, the Mexica as they called themselves.
asciimov··on Gulf of America name change in the U.S.
There it is, just like clockwork, the whataboutism appears.

Seriously though, let the locals be in charge of naming things. As a Texan, I've always just called it the Gulf. But if asked, it's full name is Gulf of Mexico, named after the Mexica (the Aztecs to you and me).

asciimov··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
> Trump is beholden to public support.

After the election he’s not. Only has to appease a handful of congress critters and a few wealthy people.

asciimov··on Apple iPhone sales dip despite AI rollout
If they can’t innovate the technology they should innovate the design. I’m ready for a new style from Apple, something that looks different.
asciimov··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
When I briefly lived in Oklahoma I found it frustrating that they use stick frame construction for homes and apartment buildings. Even when we know how to build much safer wind resistant houses.

What I thought was worse was once a tornado rips up a neighborhood builders are allowed to build replacement stick framed homes.

asciimov··on Ask HN: Is it a bad idea to make an email domain with an uncommon TLD?
For under 10 people, it’s really not worth all the pain.

Biggest issue is trust, everybody will assume you’re a spam domain. Never mind the numerous number of forms that won’t allow it.

asciimov··on A Billion Pixels a Second: Rare Look Inside Apple's iPhone 16 Camera Labs
> why not put the camera in the middle of the phone?

Because when you pick it up, your hand is covering up the middle of the phone. However the top quarter is unobstructed.

> And why do the cameras keep moving around?

Easy way to tell models apart.

That’s just The Google Rot™ leaking out. It’s the one product I wish they would kill off already.
asciimov··on FTC bans hidden junk fees in hotel, event ticket prices
Here in Texas you will nearly always be paying the maximum 8.25%, its been that way for 30+ years.
asciimov··on FTC bans hidden junk fees in hotel, event ticket prices
Around me most stores change their price tags weekly, if not more often. They either have a sheet with new tags or a small printer and scanner and they swap out the tags on the shelf.
asciimov··on Being overweight overtakes tobacco smoking as the leading disease risk factor
And they excluded vaping.
asciimov··on Being overweight overtakes tobacco smoking as the leading disease risk factor
A good place to start would be addressing overeating as a symptom not the cause.
asciimov··on Why so many families are "drowning in toys"
You’ve gotta get ahead of the problem when they’re little, get rid of toys early and often. Kid doesn’t play with it, away it goes. If the grandparents don’t like it they can keep them at their house.

Exceptions made for the kids or parents favorites that aren’t broken: Barbie, Hot Wheels, Lego, etc.

asciimov··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
It's too bad that the only people benefiting from all green power subsidies are the people that least need them.

We should be investing solar in lower income communities, as those people could really use cheaper utilities, and any saving they get would immediately go back into their communities.

asciimov··on GLP-1s are among the most important drug breakthroughs
> by simply stopping the behavior causing the issue.

Must be nice to have a metabolic system that works correctly. A lot of us don't.

For too long obesity as a mental fitness issue without considering underlying causes. Too often overeating is considered the cause not the symptom.

For many, our bodies lie, telling us we need to eat because our blood sugar is low, when in fact it's already normal-high but other process is getting in the way of energy production.

Go look into the N100 mini pcs like: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BYJ9BC15

It's a nice little low wattage machine for running some docker containers.

asciimov··on Math is still catching up to the genius of Ramanujan
In my experience it’s not talent but opportunity that is in short supply. One of the smartest people I know is an electrician, simply because he grew up in a rural area and couldn’t afford to leave for college.
asciimov··on Traveling with Apple Vision Pro
Sounds like a lovely way to get pink eye.
asciimov··on Ask HN: If you were rewriting Emacs from scratch, what would you do differently?
For the past 3 years I’ve done the following remap Caps -> lctrl/esc, enter -> rctrl/enter, tab -> lalt/tab, backslash -> ralt/ backslash. Also have the physical right alt mapped to multi key/dead greek.

It works really well, and makes emacs much more comfortable to type in.

Downside is this keeps me locked to X11 and fighting the occasional app that reads the key codes directly.

asciimov··on How long til we're all on Ozempic?
Coke and Pepsi started using HFCS in 1980.

I’d be curious about side effects of the Depression and WW2 that took an extra generation to show up.

asciimov··on Ask HN: Create an app that sends an email with some text
This sounds like a CS 102 homework assignment. Break out a book on bash scripting an get to hacking.
asciimov··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
> Is it possible that these RTO policies are actually meant to select for younger people and force others to resign?

Yes, these policies are quiet layoffs.

asciimov··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
They got offices with doors that shut and had access to secretaries for office tasks. Also, homes were much more affordable in desirable locations.
asciimov··on Breaking down a record-setting day on the Texas grid
Here in San Antonio (CPS is our sole provider) we get emails asking us to reduce our use during peak hours on high demand days like today.

Not sure how well it works, but they send out another email letting us know how we did compared to similarly sized houses in my area.

If demand goes over the edge, they will start doing rolling black outs.
