ascari··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
Exactly, I think all these regulations in the Europe fail to understand the enforceability of these, any legitimate business won't be making unsolicited calls already. For instance, I weekly get unsolicited calls from a legit recruitment agency in the UK, never ever shared my data with them, they don't even email but directly call in absurd times. I requested removal of my data after months of ignored calls but they kept calling still, reported to ICO but no luck either.

I'm 30+ and was trying to buy some wine yesterday, and was IDed and i'm clearly well over 18 yet they had to take the bottle back as I didn't carry my ID with me. Essentially the same thing with pubs/bars etc, you're clearly over 18 but there is a weird power trip yet in some raves/clubs you still see under 18s being let in.

Except that the UK has one of the most expensive electricity prices in the world
ascari··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
I follow F1 for decades, day and night. Drive to Survive is sadly far from reality and a paparazzi perspective at best.
ascari··on Responding to recruiter emails with GPT-3
While it’s a nice concept I agree it’s probably not the best fit for the use case. I also don’t understand the point of recruitment spam. What’s the purpose of sending 5 follow up emails. I find it absolutely annoying and would never respond back to an unsolicited email. Surely had they enough applicants for an appealing job, they wouldn’t have chased that much.
ascari··on Ancient civilisation under eastern Turkey estimated to be 11k-13k years old
That map look like one extremely nationalist view from Armenians. There were a billion other civilization/dynasty/kingdom that controlled the region what is so called as “Greater Armenia”.
ascari··on Europe is investing heavily in trains
Train services are totally a joke in the UK.

He replied to that original email years later
ascari··on Dennis Ritchie Home Page (2006)
When I was 14, I emailed him to thank for his work. Years later he humbly responded and said he is surpised that C is still around.
ascari··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
I believe they release slots every morning. So it’s not possible to book for the next day. They always tell me call the next morning when I call around 9:30
ascari··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
I moved to UK from Europe and I wouldn’t really say NHS is convenient. It is universal healthcare and you are not facing a bankruptcy most of the time in case of a health condition. Preventative and diagnosis treatments are so slow. In case I need to see a GP, i must try reaching them at 8ish in the morning otherwise they will simply ignore you and tell, call tomorrow.
ascari··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2021)
so if the screw up is real then how come it's fake news? Clearly the culture isn't ideal yet if you just check resources I mentioned. It was more like a modern slavery when you consider previous state.
ascari··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2021)
Why would it be? Screenshots are there, Glassdoor, Team Blind all points to toxic culture.

50K in London for a senior position? Simply low balling people.
ascari··on Using a magnetic string to fish for a lost iPhone 12 in a Berlin canal
I can’t speak for other fields but tech scene in Germany and EU is a joke and there is no way one’s compensation matches US. I had a job offer in Munich and considering how low the quality of housing is you end up still paying more than €1300 for a 1 bed flat. (This was my market search back in 2018)

This is so true. Many building companies own hundreds of low quality apartments in the cities and literally don't pay.

Not sure, if anywhere other than London is moving away really. Especially considering bad public transport outside London, many people has to stick driving to city centres with cheap diesels. My manager was paying £30 road tax for his old diesel whereas my ULEZ compliant car costs above £330.

ascari··on Tesla Roadster
Electric motors are absolutely better compared to combastion engines. But Guys, please don't compare apple to oranges. Tesla is no match to Ferrari nor McLaren. Ferrari's main intention is to build a car that has a good cornering on track. 0-60 is for muscle cars which you can compare to SRT Demon. All these Bugattis, Koenigseggs are a bunch of unsteerable rockets on tracks. Last but not least you know how Koenigsegg ended up in Nordschleife.
