aryik··on Yabai – A tiling window manager for macOS
Magnet rocks. Very worth paying for. I hate using Macs without it
aryik··on Show HN: I spent 2 years building Tablane as a 17-year-old
First of all, congratulations! This is fantastic work at any age, let alone 17.

One piece of advice - you should do some research on US/Canadian immigration policies and how a college degree affects (or doesn’t affect) your ability to immigrate. This is something that may not be top of mind for you, but if your goal is to move to the US it’s a very important factor to consider.

aryik··on Apple introduces end-to-end encryption for backups
This was incredibly interesting. Thanks for sharing!
aryik··on “You meant to install ripgrep”
Unrelated, but thank you for your work!

You’ve saved me tens if not hundreds of hours with ripgrep, and I’ve become a huge evangelist of it at my workplace. When I’m helping someone understand how to debug customer issues, the first thing I tell them is to install ripgrep. Truly a fantastic piece of software.

aryik··on A common sunscreen ingredient turns toxic in the sea – anemones suggest why
Supergoop and kinship both make pretty great non toxic sunscreens.
aryik··on Ask HN: Co-Founder Equity Split
I disagree about never. There are many challenges associated with it, and the relationship has to be very strong, but lots of world beating companies have been built by family members. Two that come to mind are Stripe with the Collison brothers, and Walmart was founded by two brothers as well.
aryik··on Wolves make roadways safer
Quite simply, no wolves aren’t dangerous. There were 12 wolf attacks from 2002-2020 in Europe and North America: [1]

“In Europe and North America we only found evidence for 12 attacks (with 14 victims), of which 2 (both in North America) were fatal, across a period of 18 years. Considering that there are close to 60.000 wolves in North America and 15.000 in Europe, all sharing space with hun- dreds of millions of people it is apparent that the risks associated with a wolf attack are above zero, but far too low to calculate”

aryik··on Launch HN: Hightouch (YC S19) – Sync data from data warehouses to SaaS tools
Congrats Kash, Tejas, Josh, and your whole team! You guys are killing it.

You’ve made incredible progress over the last year. Your customer list is looking very strong, and it seems like you’ve honed in on a real and pressing problem.

Keep up the great work, but try to take a moment to celebrate how far you’ve come!

aryik··on Show HN: Time travel debugger for web development
Congrats on the launch! This looks awesome. I would love to see this for Ruby and other backend languages, I will definitely check it out at that point. I really like the unique approach, and I frequently struggle with breakpoints in rails because the call stack gets so deep. Being able to set a break point where the error occurs and step back through time would be a huge win.
aryik··on Ask HN: Which autobiographies would you recommend and why?
Shoe Dog by Phil Knight. Fascinating story about an incredible entrepreneur.
aryik··on What’s wrong with Git? A conceptual design analysis (2016)
Try the gitlens extension for VSCode
aryik··on Apple's follow-up to M1 chip goes into mass production for Mac
You’ve gotten plenty of recommendations, but I’ll add one for Magnet [1]. I’ve been using it for years, and I love it. One of the best software purchases I’ve ever made - small, lightweight, does exactly one thing and does it very well, and made by a small developer to boot.

aryik··on M1 dev setup with a virtual Linux box
I love the gitlens extension personally - I find it to be a big productivity boost when navigating a complex/legacy codebase.
aryik··on Satellite imagery shows Northern California kelp forests have collapsed
Thank you for sharing this. I literally got open water certified in Monterey this afternoon, and I will be signing up to volunteer!
aryik··on Launch HN: Remora (YC W21) – Carbon capture for semi trucks
I don't really have an interesting question for you, but I just want to say this is a fantastic idea and I wish you all the best! It is wonderful to see innovation like this in carbon sequestration.
aryik··on Ruby 3.0 Preview 1
Great stuff! Does anyone who’s been in the Ruby ecosystem longer than me have a prediction for when Rails will support Ruby 3?
aryik··on Wildfires in Big Basin Redwoods State Park
Thank you for sharing Ethan’s Twitter. Those are some devastating and truly moving images. Big Basin is one of my favorite places, and it will always be special to me as one of the first parks I spent significant time in after moving to the Bay Area. The silver lining is that Ethan said the majority of the large redwoods are scorched but still standing. Hopefully the ecosystem is able to recover.
aryik··on Facebook account now required to login to Oculus devices
Fair enough. I haven’t had that experience yet because I’ve been working through the first party titles like Zelda and Mario.

This is why I love the Switch compared to all the other modern consoles. When I try to use a PS4 or an Xbox it feels like I'm fighting to be able to play - 10's of GB's of updates that take hours to "copy" after download, slow system updates, games that need to install for an hour after you put in the disc, etc. etc.

The Switch is the first console I've used in years where it seems like the maker of the console actually wants me to play games.

aryik··on Hacking my arm prosthesis to plug into a synth: thought-controlled music [video]
Honestly one of the coolest things I’ve seen on HN. It’s a great display of a ton of things that have just recently (10-20 years) become accessible to the masses. 3D printing for the enclosure, the internet for the schematics, and advanced prosthetics to translate the muscle signal into voltage combined with tried and true technologies like relatively simple circuit design and modular synths. Thanks for sharing!
aryik··on Launch HN: Deviceplane (YC W20) – Update and Manage Devices Running Linux
This looks really cool. Kudos for going fully open source and congrats on launching!
aryik··on You might literally be buying trash on Amazon
I’m pretty sure the San Jose green team offers unlimited free curbside pickup of bulky items. You do need to call to schedule it, but that’s fairly reasonable in my opinion.
aryik··on Ask HN: Is Anything Made in the USA?
Fair warning: I'm going to sound like a shill because I think this company is awesome.

If you want 100% made in America, https://originmaine.com/ is a great company. They've literally brought back cotton looms that were shipped out of the US to revitalize American manufacturing. Their jeans, for example, are manufactured in the US and made from cotton grown in the US. Even things like the rivets on their jeans are American made. I haven't tried the clothing but their protein shake is excellent, if a little pricey. I may get a pair of their boots soon.

Here's another one I stumbled across recently: https://www.tannergoods.com/.

aryik··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
Is it ActiveRecord? I find it to be very flexible and convenient for 95% of my use cases. There are a few places where we drop to raw SQL but AR makes that very easy.
aryik··on I find journaling indispensable
This looks fantastic, I will definitely check it out. Thank you.

Out of curiosity, what encrypted notes app do you use? I’d be interested in a simple notes app with a clean UI, cloud sync, and encryption. I’ve played with cryptpad [1] a little bit and it’s good, but maybe a little too feature-heavy. It’s closer to google docs.
