Yes and no.

This particular product probably has broader appeal than you think—

For a broader audience you'd definitely want to dumb down the entry point. If you're still in the smaller audience/specific traction stage, it probably makes sense to stay more technical.

Rather, a problem so broad (don't tell me there's not a money problem), that tackling it will take a lot longer than people anticipate.

This is very insightful, and I'll try to remember it the next time I'm tempted to get in a debate about "the right way" with someone...

arxpoetica··on How I made a website with Svelte
The list of "who is" is most certainly growing, and there are definitely some bigger names out there: https://github.com/sveltejs/svelte/blob/master/site/src/rout...

Jobs listings are cropping up in sundry places too. See for example: https://sveltejobs.dev/jobs/apple-senior-front-end-developer

arxpoetica··on State of JavaScript 2019
This statement makes no sense:

> I have to learn their proprietary syntax and markup.

One of Svelte's raison d'etre is to "use the language" and err on less proprietary syntax / api / markup. Of the big three (not including Svelte), Svelte uses far less proprietary syntax, boilerplate, and API coverage. It errs on using as much native JS, CSS, and HTML as possible.

It depends™️.

Agree in this case; really bad idea to not let people select text on whole like that.

There are tons of of cases, however, where not allowing selected text is totally a good behavior in UI.

arxpoetica··on The first non-bullshit book about culture I've read
Culture Code is a fantastic book. I'm almost done reading it. My main takeaway: decent cultures are built by good people doing good things. In some ways, it's really as simple as good leadership. (Kindness, empathy, filling people's cups, listening skills, etc.)

Not so. I know people who live this way.

Maybe not an opportunity for consoles per se (see cheeto comment), but maybe an opportunity for renting games from your neighbors. Heck, I could see this being extended online in quite a unique way. Cheaper renting some movie or game from someone who already owns it...
arxpoetica··on Goodbye, Flash
There's hope. If you look at the GUI for Figma (an Illustrator and Sketch vector drawing competitor), they've built it using the Canvas tag...and it works AMAZINGLY well. I don't know how they did it, but it feels more like butter than Sketch, and I love Sketch. I'm waiting for someone to come along and basically build the Flash equivalent of a canvas tag renderer. But it's going to take some serious smarts.

There is some precedence. Rich Harris (of Rollup & Svelte fame) has been toying with the idea of a precompiler for Web GL...

arxpoetica··on Ask HN: What are your experiences with Svelte (JS framework)
I've been using Svelte since inception, and you're 100% right, there's been a significant uptick in user base over the last 6 mos. Basically since Rich did his Rethinking Reactivity talk at YGLF back in April.[1]

Anecdotal, but something an economist friend of mine said: there are currently better models for predicting economics than there are for predicting the weather tomorrow.

arxpoetica··on Vue RFC: Expose logic-related component options via function-based APIs instead
Far, far less likely. Svelte has undergone some changes, and will continue to do so, but the latest round of change swung heavily in favor of USING THE LANGUAGE. Most of what you write in Svelte, with some notable exceptions, is vanilla JavaScript.

We in the Svelte world love it so much, it seems highly unlikely there will be any drastic switch from what we've all grown to love. (It's truly fantastic, give it a whirl: https://svelte.dev/repl/hello-world?version=3.5.3)

(Side note: I actually clicked on this link hoping Vue was learning a similar lesson, only to be disappointed.)

arxpoetica··on Google revives controversial cold-fusion experiments
One of the most iconic images of my childhood is when my scientist-inventor dad attempted to reproduce in his own lab the Fleischmann–Pons experiments of the late 80s. He'd built (I think to spec) an exact replica according to the published designs. Of course, nothing ever came of it, but it still fascinates me to this day thinking of him laboring over that. (The long beard and unkempt hair lent well to my image of him as mad scientist.)

I asked him later about the results of those experiments, and his sort of retort sounded like an embarrassing admission, something along the lines of "nothing will ever come of that."

I still idol the awesomeness of those days though.

This is precisely how I learned how to play the piano. I started w/ a Beatles anthology book, but for Christmas got Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Played it 3 times a day until I actually got it down. That rapidly accelerated my learning curve.

ArangoDB is a perfect tool for prototyping or early stages of companies that need data that might have multiple looks to it. I've used it on tons of small projects and have nothing but praise. It's a solid not-so-little beast.
