art0rz··on Stride Game Engine
> Instead of focusing on graphical fidelity I think we should be focusing on lower development time, gameplay features/diversity, stability/portability and implementation.

> I have yet to see a proper open world game (Think GTA but you can enter every room in every building) with good draw distances that don't suffer from horrible pop in.

I don't think these are compatible. The majority of man-hours are spent creating graphics, not programming features.

art0rz··on Avoid buying in HOA neighborhoods (2014)
Yes, but the effect is the same.
art0rz··on Avoid buying in HOA neighborhoods (2014)
On the contrary, especially old towns in Europe have HOAs, as they want to preserve the old town look as to keep attracting tourists (and preserve history, although I think the income from tourism is generally their highest priority).
art0rz··on Yamaha MOTOROiD
Except my PC doesn't wake up the neighborhood.
art0rz··on Suez canal blocked by a massive ship
My partner and I shipped our furniture from the US to Europe for an international move. We were tracking the ship going back and forth between Hamburg and Copenhagen for weeks. Turns out the moving company gave us the wrong ship number, and our stuff had been waiting for us in the destination port.
art0rz··on Jaywalking decriminalization, 100 years after the auto industry made it a crime
Selective enforcement?
art0rz··on Time to Upgrade Your Monitor
> I'm on Windows and can confirm 1. is an issue. Windows lets users scale UIs to be readable at high DPI on small screens. Doesn't work on all UIs (e.g. QGIS). So maybe not all OS's, but two important ones.

Haven't seen any scaling issues on Windows in years. Last time was Inkscape but they fixed that.

art0rz··on What happens to a mail-order mattress after you return it
The same is true for brands like West Elm (and it's sister brands). If you find something you like on West Elm, and you have the time to dig long enough online, you can sometimes find the exact same product for a price much closer to the cost of materials.

Even more so on Wayfair, where you can find identical products on the same site that come from the same factory sold by different sellers for different prices, although the quality of Wayfair is more hit or miss than West Elm.

art0rz··on Majority of Americans favor wealth tax on very rich: poll
> no taxation without representation

On the other hand, the 1% have enough money to influence politics through lobbying and "donations"

art0rz··on A brief look at async-await
Parent's code with callbacks would be more like this:

  fetch((err, res) => {
    if (err) {
      // yay - error handling! :)
    }

    res.json((err, myJson) => {
      if (err) {
        // oh no - another error handler :(
      }

      // do stuff
    });
  }
fetch.json is async as well. With await the try / catch would just be around both await calls.
art0rz··on Mind-controlled hearing aid allows the wearer to focus on particular voices
Disagree, my family has a history of bad hearing, and both my grandfather and my father wear them in both ears (I'm waiting for the day I need them). A few years ago I thought my father stopped wearing them but it turns out they make them so small these days, they are only visible if you're looking for it. My grandfather got the newer model which comes with a small remote he keeps in his pocket. He turns off all sound when his wife is talking too much :)
art0rz··on Android users in Europe will be asked which browser and search engine they want
My parents are also the least likely to install a browser other than what comes default
art0rz··on Famous Laws of Software Development (2017)
As I interpret Murphy's Law, it's not so much about failure in actuality, but more about anticipating the failure, and designing your code/product/system for the worst case scenario.
art0rz··on Handling 1M websocket connections in Go
I have written a 1mm+ simultaneous user websocket server for a second screen app for a well known talent TV show in Node. It was running on a single server (with failovers and redundancies of course) just fine, but 99% of the server was just broadcasting. The hard part is sending single messages to users with user-specific content.
art0rz··on Discord raises $150M, surpassing $2B valuation
HipChat is terrible. The only thing it has going for it is that it allows on-prem, where most alternatives do not.
art0rz··on ‘Dead Skunk’ Stench from Marijuana Farms Outrages Californians
After I quit, the way I perceive the smell of weed did a complete 180. It now smells like dirty socks, a smell I'd rather not get in my nose.
art0rz··on Introduction to A* (2014)
Also see https://www.redblobgames.com/grids/hexagons/ by the same author which was an awesome resource when I was implementing a hexagonal grid for something.
art0rz··on Problems with infinite scroll
A few weeks ago I was trying to find a contact page on a site that had infinite scroll (don't remember the reason or the site). The link to contact information was in the footer, which was impossible to get to with infinite scroll. Absolutely ridiculous.

Ended up having to disable JavaScript to be able to scroll down.

art0rz··on Microsoft suspends Windows 10 update, citing data loss reports
I have been running Windows since 3.11 and have never had any of the issues with Windows Update described in this thread since the XP days. Don't think these issues are common, just the vocal minority.
art0rz··on Uber Hit with Cap as New York City Takes Lead in Crackdown
I've been taking Ubers from and to JFK, EWR, and LGA from Williamsburg and Chinatown for years never had a cancel on any of them.

I thought the driver couldn't see the destination until they started the ride after you get in. Although I've encountered drivers starting a ride as soon as they see me on the street (which I contested and got money back for).

art0rz··on The Surface Book 2 is everything the MacBook Pro should be
I've shutdown my laptop/closed the lid loads of times during updates, Windows manages just fine. It rolls back the update if needed and tries again upon boot.
art0rz··on Show HN: My embarrassing personal website from the 90s
When I was ~12, the spacebar on the family computer broke. We didn't have a lot of money at the time and a new keyboard was a luxury we couldn't afford. The only way to enter a space was to paste it! So when booted into Windows, I'd find a space in a file name or a document, copy it and I'd paste it when it was needed (I just started learning how to code so I needed it often). Upshot of this was that nobody in my family wanted to bother with pasting a space every time, so I had a lot more time on the computer.
art0rz··on Show HN: Nodify, write next-gen JavaScript on node with zero config
It's a little light on information.

> Nodify is a build tool system for Node.js, allowing you to write next-generation Node.js applications with zero configuration.

Doesn't really tell me what it actually does.

art0rz··on Reactant is a new native framework for iOS
I'm not a native mobile developer, but how are Swift and live-reloading code mutually exclusive?
art0rz··on Ask HN: What are your favorite podcasts?
Hardcore History!
art0rz··on Evolution of the Lego Logo
In that same vein it's LEGO, not Lego. :)
art0rz··on Google.ai
https://com.google/ works, although it redirects to https://google.com/
art0rz··on Ask HN: I got duped into working on legacy code, should I leave?
Ad agency business (not adtech). I work for a digital production agency that caters to ad agencies, doing digital campaigns (vr, mobile games/apps, websites, webgl, anything digital really). My time on a project (code, frontend) rarely exceeds 2 months, and after that I get a fresh new project to work on from scratch. I rarely work with legacy code and usually the tech stack for these projects are quite cutting edge, too.

After working in this business I don't think I'll ever be able to return to a "normal" type of business, although stress can be quite high and often there is overtime to meet a deadline.

art0rz··on Site requests bank logins for online purchases
This works great, but some international merchants (some airlines in my case) don't support it yet. I've gotten my card declined with a relevant error message but no redirect to my bank's 2FA login page.
