arkitaip··on Fourth police officer who responded to Jan 6 attack dies by suicide
Exactly how were they targeted by BLM?
arkitaip··on Anti-Semitic social posts 'not taken down' in 80% of cases
It's very well-made, which makes it even more scary.
arkitaip··on Ideas@Mozilla
I've been thinking of a software development methodology where any and all development is done through documented users/customers needs and by that I mean that no code or design work is even allowed if it isn't rooted in an feature request, bug report or similar documentation.

Your UI still hasn't a dark theme? Users need to voice it.

There is a super popular third party tool that you should support? Users need to voice it.

New x.0 update breaks backwards compatibility? Users need to voice it.

An upstream provider has a severe security bug that's now affecting your code? Users need to voice it.

It probably wouldn't work for many software products, especially those with less knowledgeable users (e.g. apps for kids) but I suspect that for the proper use cases, user satisfaction would skyrocket and lots of pressure and anxiety would disappear from the dev team when almost all dev change is actively driven by users.

arkitaip··on Show HN: Spark'n – Unique 15m online experiences to energize dull team meetings
The above fold is kinda broken on mobile. Also, I had no immediate idea what you actually offer.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: My country may be in the midst of a coup – how should I get prepared?
You need to make plans to leave the country in an orderly way so you can move somewhere safe with job opportunities.
arkitaip··on Twitch for Learning
What's so great about Twitch that you decided to use it as an analogy?

As a regular Twitch viewer, the idea of anything Twitch that requires me to focus and learn just doesn't compute. Twitch is by its nature parasocial, and the experience is like attending a bar (small streams) or rave (huge streams).

arkitaip··on UsTaxes – open-source tax filing web application
Filing taxes can be an incredibly easy process. In Sweden, the majority of people have such basic tax filing that they only need to approve data collected by the Swedish IRS. The entire process takes a few minutes, is done online or through SMS and involves exactly 0 accountants.
arkitaip··on Some fun stats from the Google interview
> It took the total of 5 recruiters to arrange the interview. Yep, literally, 5 (!) different people talked to me so far.

> Time-wise it took ~30 days

I guess when you have crazy overhead you might as well put the people to work, even if they are costing you a fortune and contribute to negative PR because your recruiting practices are coming off as detached from reality [0].

> I chose Java as my main language.

> 3 out of 3 technical interviewers didn’t know about `var` keyword (available since Java 10). They thought I accidentally switched to Kotlin.

> 1 out of 1 didn’t know about records (in preview since Java 14)

Just because they work at Google doesn't mean they are all that.

[0] Does anyone seriously believe that the average new employee quality is higher now than it was 20 years ago when their recruiting practices were simpler faster and cheaper?

arkitaip··on Chrome 93: Multi-Screen Window Placement, PWAs as URL Handlers, and More
PWAs as URL Handlers is a leap forward that blurs the boundaries between native and web apps. I wonder what cool hacks you can create running your own web server?
arkitaip··on Notifications are good for user experience. There, I said it
Yeah, this is why devs and designers cannot be trusted to manage notifications on Android, iOS or any platform. Shit will instantly be abused to drive (users insane) "engagement" and all kinds of mental gymnastics will be done to justify the dark pattern as something positive.
arkitaip··on Elite High Schools Plot to Undermine College Admissions
> However even if we assume that the consortium’s model of evaluation would work at scale, it still has the core function of obscuring concrete academic achievements and shifting emphasis toward vague notions of character.

Is the entire American educational system a Gordian Knot of wealth extraction? It seems like every actor is out to make life harder for students and extracting as much money as possible from the other actors in the system. Schools will no longer have to consider the grades their students receive (a somewhat objective measurement of their quality) but can now focus on mostly being "character-building".

How long before the pendulum swings in the other direction, and the only thing that matters - maybe even legally so - are hard-earned grades and SAT scores?

arkitaip··on Tesla silently charges $14k when activating Autopilot on non-enabled vehicle
This was solved by Tesla but I'm curious to know if any car brand has in-car purchases, particularly of functionality?
arkitaip··on Paul Graham and Nassim Taleb on Engineering vs. Science
Two highly opinionated egos fanned by their respective sycophants trash-talk each other.
arkitaip··on Discord Launches Threads
Discord is after Slack's market share and offering threads makes sense in many contexts where the discussion isn't casual.
arkitaip··on What's bad about Julia?
> I’ve had a lot of frustration with the Julia community being unwilling to see faults in the language.

How about just moving on? It's not like there is a lack of languages and tools out there.

arkitaip··on Launch HN: InstaKin (YC S21) - Help immigrants to manage tasks in home countries
Super exciting. If you can solve the many trust issues, this could become an unicorn that could service millions of immigrants in virtually every country on the planet. One of the very few Y! startups that I actually believe can do some good as opposed to create a less shitty fart app.

Nitpick: the UI needs a makeover. Feels bland and dated. Also, is this only available for Pakistani citizens right now? Because my country is set to Pakistan and cannot be changed.

arkitaip··on Shares in Chinese online tutoring firms slump after shake-up
Obviously this will backfire in many ways with terrible social consequences, just like the original one-child policy that this policy tries to rectify.

The wealthy have always prioritized their children's education, often using expensive private tutors to give them advantages over their peers. Will the entire industry go underground or just mask it to avoid the reach of the law?

arkitaip··on Firefox Relay: Hide your real email address to help protect your identity
Yes, more of these services from Mozilla! Honestly I can see myself paying them 10-15 bucks per month for email/calendar/file storage/backup.
arkitaip··on Show HN: Website changes design each time you blink
LMAO this is fucking brilliant.
arkitaip··on Intrinsic, a new Alphabet company
Probably faster and easier to get offspring who can do it for you.
arkitaip··on Launch HN: Exams, tasks, K8, eCommerce, cell sites, health, data quality, travel
I absolutly love the art direction, such a nice break from Corporate Memphis.
arkitaip··on Intrinsic, a new Alphabet company
That Ocado factory had a fire recently cause by a robot collision, so the quality doesn't seem quite there yet [0]

arkitaip··on Google is finally doing something about Google Drive spam
> Soon, once the spam arrives in your Google Drive, you'll be able to click the menu button next to the item and choose "block user."

So it's going to be absolutely useless, then. 100% of blog spam is from unknown email accounts.

arkitaip··on California sues Activision Blizzard over unequal pay, sexual harassment
They are in utter panic and are acting out like a bunch of toddlers.
arkitaip··on Evernote's new plans – about to become even more expensive?
I wonder how much pressure Evernote is experiencing from Notion and the latest generation of productivity/collab tools? Any here who has jumped from Evernote to another tool, why?
arkitaip··on Enough is enough
Attacking NSO would be like attacking the Israeli government and you don't do that because your PM's shitty OpSec was exposed.
arkitaip··on Israel used NSO spyware as diplomatic calling card
They more or less are part of the Israeli Government. How long before their actions are seen as state-sponsored terrorism?
arkitaip··on Square Banking
It's often much cheaper. Take a look at What Microsoft offers with their Office 365 subscription plans or Zoho One.
arkitaip··on Software engineering research is a train wreck
Amazing extension. Thank you.
arkitaip··on Square Banking
Maybe we can also start moving away from feature-limited Saas offerings that are so damn proud that they focus on One Thing And One Thing Only when customers want just one affordable app to handle all their work and not fifty-eleven ones that become crazy expensive.
