arkitaip··on Ask HN: Why did you quit learning programming?
Yes and this unforgiveness starts at the very beginning when you set up your dev tools using conflicting or outdated instructions.
arkitaip··on Few people grasp the amount of effort Daniel Gackle expends running HN (2020)
> quiet, forgiving, and reflective about the HN outage and its cause.

If Cloudflare, AWS or Google goes down, it affects millions of people directly and often financially. If HN goes down, we simply find another way to waste time.

arkitaip··on Notepad++ v8.4.3: Unhappy Users' Edition
The search in Notepad++ has a project based search [0]. Never used it myself because the Find in Files (Ctrl+Shift+F) feature has been good enough when using the Directory and in all sub-folders options.

arkitaip··on Microsoft prohibits selling open source / free apps on windows store
I guess someone didn't read the actual TOS change:

"Update to 10.8.7 to prohibit charging fees in the Store for open-source or other software that is generally available for free and restrict irrationally high pricing."

arkitaip··on GTA GeoGuesser
Doesn't mean it's a good map for a game.
arkitaip··on To improve search results on YouTube, use the search prefix “intitle:”
If you use uBlock Origin you can remove most cruft by adding these rules to Settings > My filters:

arkitaip··on Ask HN: LI Posts and Getting a Job
I see people land opportunities via LinkedIn all the time but they also already have a great LI network in place.
arkitaip··on The Mind of a Benevolent Dictator
I am reading Meditations right now - well The Emperor's Handbook - and it really offers invaluable perspectives on modern life.

A fictional interview where the answers are quotes from Marcus Aurelius work is a brilliant format that revitalizes his work for modern life.

arkitaip··on 7 Core Principles of TV UX
Interesting UX field, not many designers work with TV as an platform.

[Also: as a dev transitioning to UX, I love reading about UX on HN.]

arkitaip··on [dead]
Imagine that the US needs an underground railroad for women seeking abortion in 2022.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: Am I incompotent for web development?
Web dev is in a state of shit where devs are pushed towards increasingly complex and fragile stacks. The fact that you're learning Vue, micro services, docker and god knows what else just to do front end is sad and doesn't reflect on your competence or ability.

Eventually you will learn this stack but unfortunately be forced to learn a new one fairly soon. That's the real challenge with web dev: are you ready to do old stuff in new ways because trends change so fast?

arkitaip··on The Boring Company opens first station in expanded Las Vegas tunnel system
Somehow Musk managed to convince Vegas politicians what the city needs in terms of public transportation are private tunnels for Tesla cars.
arkitaip··on HashiCorp Serf, an Introduction
I can't tell if you're joking or not.
arkitaip··on The popularity of country music in rural sub Saharan Africa
It's been a trend since the 70s.
arkitaip··on As eng manager, you so frequently get request to drop what you are doing
I think this provides some insight into why the biggest and most resourceful heavy orgs on the planet fail to innovate, often having to resort to aquire small and nimble competitors. So much bureaucracy is put into place because these orgs need stability and predictability above else.
arkitaip··on I analyzed more than 7M developer jobs
This is great if only to pop the HN bubble where everyone seems to be coding in Rust or Go.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: Why is mobile keyboard completion so bad?
I enable swiping, word suggestions, auto correct, the digits row, the emoji switcher key, shrink the height of the keyboard for easier typing, enable long press symbol insertions, spell-checking etc.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: Why is mobile keyboard completion so bad?
Gboard is pretty good with lots of customization options. So much so than when I use the default Android keyboard it feels slow and even broken.
arkitaip··on My awakening moment about how smartphones fragment our attention span
Boards games and card games are great too.
arkitaip··on Wearing flashy/status clothes makes people less likely to cooperate with you
Now imagine those people being recruiters, bosses and other gate keepers with considerable power over careers. It's dangerous to be a humble introvert in a world that's anything but.
arkitaip··on GPT-3 is already more than capable of enabling student plagiarism
Prompt engineering - now that's a great euphemism for cheating.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Cloudflare?
For what, DNS, Firewall, CDN?
arkitaip··on Need some advice, feeling depressed about the direction of our industry
I've had the same realization as you and it one of the reasons why I'm heading over to UX. Obviously UX isnt without its industry issues but it is very refreshing to be in a field where the underlying tools don't change every year or so. Plus the people are much nicer.
arkitaip··on Contra Wirecutter on the IKEA air purifier
You know what the messed up thing about Wirecutter's affiliate marketing is?

Their Amazon links are consistently broken to the point where the links don't point to products but are faulty search queries. Like, if you are going to compromise your reputation doing affiliate marketing, at least get the damn links right so I don't have to perform a Amazon search to find the actual product.

arkitaip··on Coinbase Announces 18% Layoffs
We have to finally accept the fact that the clowns are indeed driving the clown car.
arkitaip··on PageToSheet: Download Tables from Any Webpage to Excel
Its buggy and unpredictable. I feel the crawling engine hasnt been kept up to date.
arkitaip··on A Google engineer who thinks the company’s AI has come to life
I'm not seeing lots of proof that Lambda is sentient but I do see compelling evidence that it might not matter if people believe that the AI is human enough. Most people, myself included, probably couldn't tell that Lambda was a program.
arkitaip··on What do you use to design a new piece of software?
I can't recall a single tool that covers all of the design process, there are just too many industries involved.

As for UI/UX, give Figma a try. It's powerful, supports all kinds of design work (workshops, sketching, prototypes, presentations) and has a generous free plan.

arkitaip··on It costs $110k to fully gear up in Diablo Immortal
Why?
arkitaip··on Ask HN: Advice for a Generalist Going Solo?
