arkitaip··on Google chief: I'd disclose smart speakers before guests enter my home
Of course they know, they just need to cover their asses sue to the litigation risk.
arkitaip··on Peter Ratcliffe's Nobel Prize Winning Study Was Rejected by Journal
Or maybe you're in a position of great power and people don't dare to question your terrible ideas.
arkitaip··on Show HN: Webwide – a discussion community for web designers, devs and makers
You should post this in a separate Show HN.

arkitaip··on Cows painted with zebra-like striping can avoid biting fly attack
I wonder if a poncho would with the same pattern would have the same effect...? brb registering ponchos4cows.com
arkitaip··on I used to fear being a nobody, then I left social media
If you use an adblocker like uBlock Origin, you can use the following filter to remove the top navbar:

news.ycombinator.com##.pagetop

arkitaip··on The 2002 mandate for internal communication systems at Amazon
If you use an adblocker like uBlock Origin, you can add the following rule: news.ycombinator.com##.pagetop

Unfortunately it removes ALL of the top navbar but I've found it really useful to get around HN's damaging and useless gamification metric.

arkitaip··on Have Online Reviews Lost All Value?
I've come to really distrust Wirecutter after doing additional review research and realizing that many of the products they recommend have real issues and are in fact not the best whatever you can purchase. Also, their affiliate system isn't the most reliable one so often when you click their Amazon affiliate product link, you're forwarded to a non-existing product page.
arkitaip··on People are reporting collisions with Tesla’s Smart Summon feature
How is it 'user stupidity' when customers are using a feature as it is advertised, especially since the distances traveled are absolutely trivial?
arkitaip··on Unexpected cracking found on critical Boeing 737 Next Generation part
It's crazy how much the flight experience varies between countries. I recently traveled between Sweden and Germany and the entire experience from online check-in to reaching my destination was painless and very convenient. There was very little queuing and the longest one was on the tax free when I bought water... Didn't even have to show my passport during the flights and I was never checked by security.
arkitaip··on An HTML attribute potentially worth $4.4M to Chipotle
Some 25 years of web usability research has taught us that users are incredibly impatient and will bust out of conversion funnels over the tiniest obstacles like they are the Kool-Aid Man on crack. The conversion rate for most restaurants (e.g. customer places an order) is only 1-3% [0,1].

arkitaip··on A ‘Grass-Roots’ Campaign to Take Down Amazon Is Funded By Its Biggest Rivals
Yes they are absolutely delusional when it comes to their competitiveness.
arkitaip··on Privacy Fundamentalism
I am a typography nerd but let's be real here: web fonts are not so important that you should trade away your visitors' privacy. A CSS system fonts approach [0] is not only great for user privacy but results in better performance, security and more consistent GUIs.

[0] See https://flaviocopes.com/css-system-fonts/#popular-websites-u... . In the future, web devs might reliably use "font-family: system-ui;"

arkitaip··on Privacy Fundamentalism
Most sites add analytics by default without having any CRO strategy in place let alone understanding of the privacy implications. It's just a case of "let's just add analytics and maybe we might find it useful sometime in the future". It doesn't help that Google Analytics, the bigger provider out there, has an atrocious, maze-like GUI that makes understanding of these matters difficult for even experienced web professionals.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: Best Blogging Platform
WordPress all the way. I genuinely think it's the self-hosted solution that offers the best combination of control, flexibility and ease-of-use. You just need a couple of plugins for performance and safety and you are set [0].

There are literally tens of thousands of themes - open source and commercial - that you can try out in a matter of minutes instead of wasting days or weeks designing your own theme.

You rarely have to code stuff by yourself because there is a plugin for any functionality you can imagine.

Latest version of WordPress comes with the new Gutenberg editor which I'm personally not a huge fan of as it obfuscates too much of WordPress' inner workings. You might, therefore, want to use the Classic Editor plugin as a solution.

If you haven't already bought a domain name, I recommend Porkbun. Moved several domains to them in the past months and have found them to be cheap and yet reliable straight shooters.

[0] My list of must-have plugins: Yoast (for SEO), Autoptimize (caching/performance), Wordfence Security (multi-layer security).

arkitaip··on Phone Companies Ink Deal With All 50 States And D.C. To Combat Robocalls
well done - kitboga would have been proud!
arkitaip··on How to Break into a Crowded Market and Win
We really have no idea what makes a business successful in such a way that we can turn that knowledge into a repeatable process.
arkitaip··on Verizon to Sell Tumblr to Automattic
Why do you think that hosting porn for random people will make Automattic money?
arkitaip··on Where will ‘garage orphans’ charge electric cars?
Once cars get smart enough to actually drive on their own, your car can sneak off to the nearest charging station while you are at work or sleeping at home.
arkitaip··on American with No Medical Training Ran Center for Malnourished Kids. 105 Died
She got children killed by performing random medical procedures on them. She literally had to Google symptoms because she had no clue what she was doing.
arkitaip··on There is no evil like reCAPTCHA
That technique hasn't worked for years. Try setting up a vanilla WordPress installation with the most popular forms plugins. The only anti-spam measure that works is reCaptcha v. 3.
arkitaip··on Terminating Service for 8Chan
Has a mass shooting ever been prevented due to 8chan?
arkitaip··on Activision Blizzard has moved billions of dollars of profit into tax havens
^ How you know you've become middle-aged.
arkitaip··on Medieval people bathed regularly
How would you know how she teaches? One of her problems as a scholar is having ignorant geniuses claim all kinds of nonsense about the medeival times that are patently false. Her tone is to some extent a reflection of having to deal with those people.
arkitaip··on Facebook to Add Its Name to Instagram, WhatsApp
Good. The sooner both apps die the better. It is ridiculous how shallow and useless Instagram has become.
arkitaip··on The race is on to develop new strategies for storing nuclear waste
So basically, let's just offload the nuclear waste problem to future generations. That's exactly the same line of thinking that caused climate change.
arkitaip··on “We plan to hide ‘https’ scheme and subdomain ‘www’ in Chrome omnibox in M76”
There are legit reasons why you should use a www. sub domain: https://bjornjohansen.no/www-or-not
arkitaip··on Fog Creek Is Now Glitch
I suppose Fog Creek as a brand name was a bit weak, and that it makes sense to elevate an existing sub brand to parent brand instead of pouring millions into creating and marketing a new brand. Glitch also feels very innovative, fresh, quirky and progressive in a way that would be foolish to not utilize.
arkitaip··on Resp, a cool chatbot assistant and tracker for cinema and TV Shows
What's your stack? Any tips for people who want to create agents like this?

Also, I asked for anime suggestions and got Sherlock, The Wire, Peaky Blinders among others.

arkitaip··on A chat room inside the browser console
I love everything about this.
