arkitaip··on If high street shopping was like online shopping [video]
I think they way they act is designed to mirror the saccharine yet useless and often hostile shopping experiences we have online.
arkitaip··on Free Transit for Riders Under 18? In Paris, It’s Here
Sweden uses both private and public transportation to transport kids (skolskjuts) who live far away from school and it's free by law. In Stockholm most kids simply get an electronic smart card that allows them to use all public transportation as they see fit within school hours. Again, it's free for students who live beyond walking distance (and according to other needs) from school.
arkitaip··on Toilets in a Medieval Castle (2018)
Everyone should give Shad a follow. Dude is planning on building a medieval experience park on land he've recently purchased and it's going to be fun to follow his journey.

arkitaip··on Winamp Skin Museum
Back then you had a different software for each media type. Browsing Download.com, Tucows and Snap Files to find new cool stuff was a thing I did. Most of my friends did Windows/software customization with Litestep, skins, wallpapers and what not. shakes fist at sky
arkitaip··on The First Randomized Controlled Trial on Vitamin D and Covid-19
Oh I absolutely believe that social distancing and better hygiene are the reasons why I've gotten so few colds this year but those actions can't fully explain the decrease in severity. My colds have gone from being absolutely miserable to barely noticeable and are over in a week or less. I could be totally wrong but I'm not willing to remove vitamin d/k/c from my diet just to validate the hypothesis.
arkitaip··on The First Randomized Controlled Trial on Vitamin D and Covid-19
Obviously thought about that but the intensity of the colds is way different.
arkitaip··on The First Randomized Controlled Trial on Vitamin D and Covid-19
You would have to take crazy amounts of vitamin D - more than 250 mcg (10000 IU) - for it to be toxic [0][1].

arkitaip··on The First Randomized Controlled Trial on Vitamin D and Covid-19
I've been taking Vitamin D3 5000 IU and Vitamin K2 MK-7 100 mcg daily since February to boost my immune system, and I've noticed a radical difference in my colds.

I used to get a major cold every 2-3 month and they were really bad lasting two weeks with fever, fatigue, coughs, colds, really stuffy nose, etc. Now? The two colds I've had were over in a week and the symptoms were so incredibly mild - mostly a light runny nose - that I'm legit grateful when I get a cold.

Regardless of vitamin D's effect on covid-19, the supplement has already paid off big time as far as I'm concerned. I've started to take 1g of vitamin C for the same reason, i.e. to boost my immune system. I should add that I live in a Nordic country with long dark winters and that I can't/don't go outside as much as I should.

arkitaip··on College student uses GPT-3 to write fake blogs and ends up top of Hacker News
Lots of people don't even bother reading DFA so you don't even need gpt-3 to "fool" HN.
arkitaip··on How to Write Unmaintainable Code (2003)
Comments can get stale really fast but I probably write at least twice the amount of comments as code because that's how I reason about the function and intention of the code. Sometimes the code seems simple but the reason why it exists can be really complex.
arkitaip··on How to Write Unmaintainable Code (2003)
I write all my personal code, including comments, in English and not Swedish precisely because I want non-Swedish devs to be able to perfectly understand the code even without Swedish language or cultural knowledge. Also, thinking and writing in English is much simpler than jumping between two languages.

arkitaip··on Ask HN: Anyone a social entrepreneur, i.e. placing social impact above profit?
HN doesn't really do satire and its pool of inhumane thinking is endless.
arkitaip··on Bill Gates calls Microsoft’s TikTok deal a poisoned chalice
He's saying that managing TikTok might be more difficult than Microsoft can imagine. Here is the relevant part from the interview:

-----

As you are the technology adviser to Microsoft, I think you can look forward in a few months to fighting this battle yourself when the company owns TikTok.

Yeah, my critique of dance moves will be fantastically value-added for them.

TikTok is more than just dance moves. There’s political content.

I know, I’m kidding. You’re right. Who knows what’s going to happen with that deal. But yes, it’s a poison chalice. Being big in the social media business is no simple game, like the encryption issue.

So are you wary of Microsoft getting into that game?

I mean, this may sound self-serving, but I think that the game being more competitive is probably a good thing. But having Trump kill off the only competitor, it’s pretty bizarre.

Do you understand what rule or regulation the president is invoking to demand that TikTok sell to an American company and then take a cut of the sales price?

I agree that the principle this is proceeding on is singly strange. The cut thing, that’s doubly strange. Anyway, Microsoft will have to deal with all of that.

-----

arkitaip··on Bill Gates calls Microsoft’s TikTok deal a poisoned chalice
I totally see Microsoft ruining TikTok simply because of their corporate culture. Microsoft has had an astonishing history of destroying billions of dollars in value simply because they can't manage their products better. Internet Explorer, Bing and their mobile phones represent entire industries where Microsoft has been totally decimated despite enormous advantages in terms of resources and monopolies.

arkitaip··on WordSafety: Check a name for unwanted meanings in foreign languages
The corporation that just invested in a 100M global re-branding will for sure want to make sure their branding isn't obviously offensive in a certain market. It's a basic service that branding agencies offer. This could be an useful tool for those efforts.
