arkitaip··on Show HN: GPT-3 Powered Customer Service
How exactly does this work? What are the AI models used?

I tried the demo with several scenarios and it was very underwhelming considering the AI/GPT-3 promises made as I got generic troubleshooting advice, e.g. "If your computer has a blue screen, please restart your computer. If the problem persists, contact the help desk at (555)678-9012".

Can the bot offer any meaningful troubleshooting to real problems specific customer might have? Otherwise, isn't it just like any chat bot that's been coded with to respond to specific text triggers?

arkitaip··on Audacity: Clarification of Privacy Policy
How would you know though? Telemetry is so common in desktop and web apps alike that you're probably surrounded by it.
arkitaip··on Audacity: Clarification of Privacy Policy
I get the feeling that the community has had enough of the corporate shenanigans, that a proper fork is about to go alive any day now.
arkitaip··on New mystery AWS product ‘Infinidash’ goes viral despite being entirely fictional
I was just joking around, hadn't even seen the joke ads...
arkitaip··on New mystery AWS product ‘Infinidash’ goes viral despite being entirely fictional
The industry is already recruiting senior Infinidash Engineers, demanding 5 years of expertise.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: How do you share knowledge in your company?
What do they learn, about what?
arkitaip··on Social media is broken – a new report offers ways to fix it

arkitaip··on Health insurers are threatening not to cover some patients’ ER bills
This is after all Hacker News where we provide simplistic and ultimately wrong solutions to problems we don't understand.
arkitaip··on Major Swedish supermarket chain hit by cyberattack
It never was common but all the cash management and security measures quickly add up in terms of costs.
arkitaip··on Major Swedish supermarket chain hit by cyberattack
Handling cash is expensive for stores. They need to store the cash safely in-store, deploys all kinds of security measures to prevent robberies and theft, use armored cars to transport to and from the bank, pay more in insurance, etc.
arkitaip··on Show HN: Less Addictive YouTube – a cross-browser plugin
Tbh UX is an aspect of uBlock that could need serious rework. I still haven't figured out what the patchwork of colored squares means...
arkitaip··on Facebook is testing drastic changes to Instagram to make it more like TikTok
Facebook seems to be in constant reactive mode, ready to undermine their own apps by catching up to the latest trend with poorly implemented features.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: How to grow a Digital Agency?
What kind of work do you want to do? What kind of life do you want to live?

As the owner of the business, you can pretty much shape the business to fit your needs but you need to recruit good people who can take over your current workload.

Do you still want to work closely with customers every day? Then hire an CEO/manager to manage the business.

Want to work as the CEO yourself? Hire people who can manage your customers' projects.

arkitaip··on How to Work Hard
What I'm hearing is that you should startup a biz to sell those doctor-making carrots.
arkitaip··on Mexican billionaire Salinas says his banking business may embrace Bitcoin
Billionaires routinely conspire with politicians and law makers to prevent workers from earning a few dollars more per hour, but somehow they would would be too ethical to pump and dump Bitcoin?
arkitaip··on Roblox on Linux with recent Wine 6.11
Roblox games can be incredibly creative, many are sims and builders, i.e. games within games. But yeah, Roblox Studio is where the real stuff gets made
arkitaip··on Why do recipe writers lie about how long it takes to caramelize onions? (2012)
The recipes here are not only outdated, they are for the wrong thing and end up 10x more expensive. Like you wanted to bake an apple pie but somehow ended up with a lump of bread. And it's on fire for some reason. Oh, and whoever decided that whisks aren't a thing anymore so now we're all stuck with shiny but inferior alternatives - fuck you.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: How to Promote a Gmail Add-On on the Google Workspace Marketplace?
What is your addon? What does it do? Who are you targeting?

Identify and reach out to productivity nerds. You know, people with their own blogs and newsletters about office tools, productivity, life hacks and such. You probably want to super niche your outreach even more.

arkitaip··on Remove the “View page info” item from the page context menu
Firefox should move in the opposite direction, i.e. targeting power users like devs by offering "advanced" features.

Firefox lost the browser wars a long time ago but it can still retreat, carve out a nisch for itself where a small but dedicated community loves its products. But this is impossible as long as they refuse to accept that they aren't a mainstream product anymore.

arkitaip··on Ask HN: Is turnover of staff actually considered a problem?
Workers are seen as interchangable at many places. just look at Amazon, one of the most profitable and productive companies in history, that takes pride in how it wears down its employees using corporate language that I'm sure you're painfully familiar with. Because of this, they aren't going to give you a raise even if they have objective proof that competitors can recruit you with higher raise and other benefits. Again, even FAANGs with their near unlimited resources have been found guilty by the American legal system to conspire with each other to keep salaries down. These issues that conspire against workers aren't due to individual flawed companies or policies but principles and philosophies that are at the very core if how companies view their employees, especially in tech. From a company's point of view, suppressing salaries not only makes sense, it's deeply ingrained in the larger corporate hive mind that they are a part of.

TLDR companies really do not have your best in mind and what is best for them often means the worst outcome for you. So get that raise by switching employers; if the roles were reversed, your employer wouldn't think twice about it.

arkitaip··on First Grocery Platform, where you could get the Groceries for free
This isn't a good use of Show HN, there just isn't much for HNers to contribute to and for you to get feedback on.
arkitaip··on Peter Thiel turned a Roth IRA into a $5B tax-free piggy bank
Because building for the privileged is the only thing the filthy rich can do. That or funding a shitty decentralized platform.
arkitaip··on Kickstarter CEO: Let's try a 4-day work week
What would HNers prefer, Fridays off or shorter work days?
arkitaip··on You should have children in your 40s
> Children are an amazing experience, but one that does not have to be on someone else’s schedule.

Good luck with that attitude when your child is born and requires ALL your attention ALL the time.

arkitaip··on HTML Data List Element
Fields with autocomplete have been around for decades. By having them in a spec, we don't have to reinvent the UI element poorly on every single site.
arkitaip··on HTML Data List Element
Autocomplete should have been part of HTML 20 years ago. It's incredibly frustrating how slow HTML moves when it comes to basic usability.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: I don't feel like working at all, what to do?
Therapy sounds like a good start to untangle what you're experiencing.

Also, you work at a FAANG, for any reasonable definition of success, you've made it. You wouldn't be where you are if you weren't good at what you do and vetted by lots of people. Can you get better? Have you done mistakes? Probably, but that doesn't mean you're bad.

arkitaip··on Amazon destroying millions of items of unsold stock in its warehouses every year
That's amazing to know!
arkitaip··on Ask HN: Are there people who make a living from just web scraping?
If you can scrape together useful lead data you can sell it for marketing purposes. There are also people who scrape and sell sales data for sellers on e-commerce platforms like Amazon or Ebay.
arkitaip··on Internal Amazon documents shed light on how company pressures out office workers
Not can, actively is. If you as as manager know that you have to fire x% of your employees no matter how good they are as a whole, you are always going to hire certain people just so you can fire them in order to protect your most valued people.

Also, because each hire costs thousands of dollars, the company is literally wasting millions each year because Bezos had this dangerously ignorant and dehumanizing idea that people - except himself of course - are lazy so they need to be terrorized into being productive by firing a certain percentage of the employees.

Ultimately, it damages not just Amazon's brand as a employer, it reflects poorly on Amazon employees and managers for going along with this charade.
