arkitaip··on Ask HN: What is cheapest way to just receive (not send) email to a domain I own?
Cloudflare has free email routing.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: Was Bard just someone's ticket to get promotion at Google?
OpenAI's valuation is at $27B-29B. That's all the incentive that companies need to go after OpenAI.
arkitaip··on Zoom just told employees to return to the office
> Those who live within 50 miles of a Zoom office must now work there at least two days a week, the company confirmed.

What a bizarre and arbitrary criteria. Also, wouldn't affected employees start moving so that they are 50 miles away from their offices?

arkitaip··on The fall of Stack Overflow, explained?
The problem is that SO is so toxic that it makes Reddit's toxicity seem rather tolerable.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: How do I get started in philosophy
I find that philosophy becomes dry and irrelevant when only treated as a field of study as opposed to a way of living.

My suggestion is to find a school of thought that you find useful enough that it can actually guide you in your everyday life.

For example, many people on HN find Stoicism easy to understand and fairly applicable - but maybe not always easy to apply - to their daily lives. I can recommend "The Daily Stoic" by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman [0] as a good introduction to stoicism with modern commentary.

arkitaip··on US smartphone shipments fall sharply, but Android more than iPhone
Interesting, this is what I'm considering too after exclusively using Android+Windows since forever. The enshittification of Windows is mainly what has changed my mind - worse privacy, UX, forcing users to use online accounts - but also life seems more simple when you only have Apple to consider instead of whatever shenanigans that Microsoft and Google throws at you. Furthermore, the UX of the Apple eco system seems better than anything I've encountered on Android+Windows.
arkitaip··on Microsoft Owns the Trademark for “X”
They don't have departments anymore and I don't think they can afford legal advice. It's probably just Elon using ChatGPT.
arkitaip··on Hayao Miyazaki’s How Do You Live is a beautiful relic – and the end of an era
I feel the same about all movies hitting theaters these days. The marketing and the social discussions just aren't there anymore.
arkitaip··on The theory versus the practice of “static websites”
I love WordPress but wish it had pods built-in and a visual bilder more like Elementor where you can design everything including templates and content types.
arkitaip··on The theory versus the practice of “static websites”
I am using Cloudflare pages and it's super easy to use. In the easiest version, there isn't even git just plain old file uploads.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: How could I safely contact drug cartels?
This site is insufferable sometimes.
arkitaip··on Sourcetable raises $3M, claiming the future of spreadsheets is spreadsheets
They aren't just competing against Excel but an Office 365 license. Not saying it's impossible but it kinda is impossible when you don't offer the entire product portfolio at a competitive price.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: How about this landing page?
UX designer and ex front-end dev here.

Based on the above fold on Firefox mobile [0], I actually have no idea what you offering. "Save for later, read forever" or the screenshot doesn't tell me enough. I'm assuming this is a bookmarking service but I don't know. There are other things you could improve but above fold will make or break your site.

arkitaip··on Terrible real estate agent photographs
At some point you would have to actually visit the property, though? Couldn't you sidestep the real estate agent anyways?
arkitaip··on Terrible real estate agent photographs
Yes, just hand the keys to someone's home to a complete stranger, what could possibly go wrong.
arkitaip··on Upgrading Windows 1.0 to Windows 11 [video]
Amazing that the upgrade path is so smooth, disappointing that it ends with the spyware that is Windows 11.
arkitaip··on San Francisco fire chief fed up with robotaxis that mess with her firetrucks
This is hilariously ignorant because thats actually what happened with cars when they were first introduced. Amazing tech that caused so much societal issues that all kinds of laws and regulations came into effect.
arkitaip··on A case for toe socks
That's why you wash your dog's paws.
arkitaip··on Should you standardise tools in your company? Case of Miro vs. MS Whiteboard
> Recently, a decision was announced to decommission Miro as an official Telia tool. The replacement tools suggested was a combination of Microsoft Whiteboard, Microsoft Visio, Jira and Confluence.

I can't even imagine a worse replacement than that shudders. How typical that great bespoke tools are rejected in favor of whatever poor features/products available through existing product licenses.

arkitaip··on A Leaked Tesla Report Shows the Cybertruck Had Basic Design Flaws
Vehicle design is identical across dozens of brands because risk minimization and asset maximization not because the brand have found the perfect designs.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: Have you stopped using Google much because of ChatGPT?
I'm probably using Google less but just relying on ChatGPT is such a PITA with the hallucinations and how its reasoning just breaks down a few prompts in. It will "forget" instructions, mess up output formats, any facts have to be double-checked, etc. It barely worth the effort sometimes.
arkitaip··on Elon Musk on Sam Altman and ChatGPT: I am the reason OpenAI exists
It's very hard to believe a single thing he says when he lies so constantly and casually.
arkitaip··on Meta AI releases ImageBind demo: Holistic AI learning across six modalities
Oh please, research means nothing in this context when you need to ship product and work on the dev and user experience.
arkitaip··on GitHub incident: ongoing issues with Actions, Issues and other Git operations
Goddamn and here I thought I was getting errors because the files i pushed were to large or something.
arkitaip··on Google Calendar and Assistant Reminders Will Migrate to Google Tasks Soon
Fastmail has a pretty good calendar when you get subscribe for email. My main complaint is who don't use embedded calendar links and instead send you .ics files or force you to use Google Calendar.
arkitaip··on Geoffrey Hinton leaves Google and warns of danger ahead
Fame and greed, what else.
arkitaip··on People who use Notion to plan their whole lives
You're probably way better off because of it. Most productivity work is busy work and a failure to better manage anxiety and stress.
arkitaip··on Sundar Pichai received $226M compensation, boosted by a triennial stock grant
Tell that to the thousands of googlers who are struggling on the job market right now.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: What unique opportunities are there in tech and content creation?
Take a look at the upcoming AI tools in this industry first. Content as we understand it is about to implode.
arkitaip··on The One Thing I Can’t Stand About Teaching English in Japan (2019)
Saving face.
