arkensaw··on The strangest letter of the alphabet: The rise and fall of yogh
I was lazy, I didn't do the accent.
arkensaw··on The strangest letter of the alphabet: The rise and fall of yogh
English gets to use a sentence. It can be reworded any number of ways. I did a bit of quick googling and the clearest English I came up with for `Regulation (EC) No 1760/2000` is "Requirements for the Labelling of Minced Beef" which is a lot easier to process than Rinderkennzeichnungsfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz. The reason we split code over lines is the same reason we split sentences into words. Easier for the brain to parse.

I wonder do German brains work on a much longer context window because of the language?

Touche

> It’s full of silent letters, as in numb, knee, and honour. A given sound can be spelled in multiple ways (farm, laugh, photo), and many letters make multiple sounds (get, gist, mirage).

that last one is hardly fair - gist and mirage are french words. might as well complain about the silent letters in rendezvous or faux pas.

arkensaw··on How Israeli actions caused famine in Gaza, visualized
That simply will never happen. As outspoken as EU countries are, they are not inclined to act beyond the diplomatic equivalent of a strongly worded email. It's a fantasy to think that any single EU nation would risk a shooting war with Israel by trying to deliver aid without permission, and they absolutely could never reach a consensus on doing it as a unit.
arkensaw··on A WebGL game where you deliver messages on a tiny planet
This is stunning, and I adore it. I had an idea to build a game set on a tiny planet but I never even started, and here you have created something that's awe-inspiring. keep it up!
arkensaw··on Raspberry Pi 500+
I guess its Pi 1200 next then?
arkensaw··on RPi 500 arrives with mechanical switches, RGB LED backlit keys
I never got a pi 400 or 500, but this one looks interesting. basically an RGB LED mechanical keyboard but with a 16GB pi 5 inside, and a 256GB SSD
arkensaw··on UK government advises deleting emails to save water
Ok I had heard of it happening in the UK but now I can't find any evidence of such, apart from a just approved scheme to treat wastewater and pump it into the Thames upstream, which is then used to source drinking water in London. So in a way, its going to happen in London, even if it hadn't already been, as I had believed.

But I would hope datacentres could use recycled or desalinated water for cooling rather than using drinking water.

arkensaw··on UK government advises deleting emails to save water
Ok, its maybe more expensive than I realised according to that source, but I would argue that comparing it to something like charging EVs or running a fridge is not a fair comparison. If you desalinate 1000 litres of water it's not the same as a household using 1000 litres of water. Not exactly. Once water is in a municipal system it's cleaned and reused many many times. Desalination could overcome water shortages by topping up water in a system, in times of drought, rather than just waiting for rain.
arkensaw··on UK government advises deleting emails to save water
Sorry I upvoted before I thought about the consequences. Please don't read this.
arkensaw··on UK government advises deleting emails to save water
Desalination is cheap though. It's just never really been needed at scale in the UK because of rainfall. Maybe it's time to reassess
arkensaw··on Modos Paper Monitor – Open-hardware e-paper monitor and dev kit
I'm disappointed by how expensive these things still are. Smartphone size eink panels are so cheap that every supermarket has thousands of them as price display panels. but try and find epaper bigger than 10" and you'll be paying $350+ just for a panel that does nothing by itself.
arkensaw··on UK government advises deleting emails to save water
Ok I'm not a physicist but surely long term storage of pictures and emails does not actively generate heat in a data-center?

Encouraging people to log on and delete old pics and emails is only going to create more heat as servers have to spin up access to stuff.

The real culprit of data-center heat usage is surely AI

arkensaw··on Ask HN: What trick of the trade took you too long to learn?
this is great advice!

Nice Heinlein reference

arkensaw··on Show HN: Petrichor – a free, open-source, offline music player for macOS
I've been looking for exactly this for the longest time. Using Foobar2000 right now but looking for something better and I think this might be it.

HOWEVER.

I can't run it. I get a message. '"Petrichor.app" can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software'

I've tried the release dmg and also the homebrew version.

arkensaw··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
I have an old copy of office 2003 I still use, it's lightning quick on even ten year old hardware. It literally starts in under 1 second.

It needs a plugin to open and save docx but it works well.

I don't know if there's some fantastic functionality I'm missing out on but it works fine for me.

arkensaw··on Show HN: I built an app to generate story relationships using Mermaidjs
i'm suffering some frequency illusion right now because I only heard about Dungeon Crawler Carl for the first time, literally yesterday and today here it is in a comment
arkensaw··on Space Station Flight Was 'Wilder' Than We Thought
"slashdot". now there's a name I've not heard in a very long time
arkensaw··on I maintain a 17 year old ThinkPad
I have an X201 (15 years old) and X220 (14 years) that I regularly use, running different flavors of linux. they've both been repaired and upgraded a few times. I'm spoiled by having an M2 Macbook as a daily driver - they can't match it for speed - but I love the ruggedness and resilience and I always will.
arkensaw··on HTTrack Website Copier
omg I used to use httrack to archive interesting sites at home, usual some sort of hobbyist boardgame thing or historical resource. I never kept them but the originals are long gone now, I should have!
arkensaw··on US Ends Support For Ukrainian F-16s
I wouldn't presume to understand the bananas ideas of Trump and his kindergarten kronies, but I imagine they're looking at an inaccurately large landmass on a mercator projection map and hearing about the oil underneath and seeing dollar signs.

On a map, it looks to be bigger than all of North America, although in reality its only about 1/5th of the size of the US.

(although granted that's still a very large area that they probably see as 'up for grabs' since Denmark is small and far away and the US already have airbases there)

arkensaw··on US Ends Support For Ukrainian F-16s
Yes I think you are misunderstanding. The leaner forces in all of the cases above are not the US, but the opposition.
arkensaw··on Ask HN: How do you backup your Android?
I backup photos onto external drives every few months when I remember too. Is there anything else to backup?
arkensaw··on Show HN: Guess The Painter – A web based simple(idea) but hard to play game
I went back to try without an account. I guess there's heavy load / traffic right now because loading a painting takes 60+ seconds
arkensaw··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
I don't mind so much if photoshop has these abilities but to put them inside the camera app is just such a backward step for creativity
arkensaw··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
> I figured you'd rather read something my brain made up (albeit unconsciously) than something a machine made up using linear algebra without understanding any of the words that it's using.

I mean, any article written by a human is something the brain made up. And I'm fine with that. But it reads like trying to give your opinion extra weight by associating it with Steve Jobs. It just came off weird.

I'm with you on most points. I'm not an iphone user but I can certainly appreciate that Apple Intelligence does not match the hype. That seems to be a recurring theme with AI though. Release a thing, shout from the rooftops about how great it is, and then wait for people to start posting about glue in pizza recipes or urging people to kill themselves or generating fictional news alerts.

arkensaw··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
I hate that we have spent the last 20 or so advancing digital cameras to the point where a everyone has an amazing DSLR in their pocket and now we're at the point in history where we have to define what a photograph is, because everyone is trying to shoehorn some shitty AI image gen thing into our cameras for a quick profit
arkensaw··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
I was giving this my attention until the author included a long quote from Steve Jobs from the author's own dream

Sorry, what?

Apart from the level of dream-detail recalled being highly dubious, quoting your own hallucination of Steve Jobs to help with your argument about generative AI being useless (and missing the irony) is downright weird.

Also Math notes is basically the same thing search engines have been able to do for over a decade now. Enter a sum, get an answer.
