ariendj··on He spent his life building a $1M stereo
I love the 'boring and hidden' aspect. I used to have a huge stereo system. Nowadays I have a PC with a good sound card. It runs Kodi and is hooked up to two active speakers.

Everything my old rack would do has been replicated in software at state of the art quality with free software. Any old desktop PC is powerful enough.

A cheap app that will provide results comparable to Neumann, Trinnov or Lyngdorf is drc-fir [0]. It will correct frequency response and phase while correcting the reverberation in your listening room. It's free software and quite well documented.

Finally, I can decorate my virtual home with blood splatters, a bag of dope, a gun and a grinder.

In all seriousness, the application is pretty cool but some of the 3d models included make me imagine some of the gruesome scenarios that need to be modeled like this. Hat's off to the people who do this in order to solve crimes. I know I could't stomach some of it.

ariendj··on I splurged for the fanciest dishwasher and it was worth it
The only thing better than a Miele is a Miele Professional. All the benefits of the household models but a lot faster. My PG8081 takes 36 minutes when it's full. That's when it's connected to 230 volts. My friend has the same model running on 380 volt, it takes 21 minutes. In both cases the machines are connected to hot water as solar water heating panels are installed.
ariendj··on Vodafone unveils prototype 5G network built on a Raspberry Pi computer
I hope they really push this concept and sell the hardware at a loss. A lime micro SDR with a raspberry pi in a box is a radio hacker's dream come true.
ariendj··on German defense minister announces resignation
The fact that she never got around to learning the ranks of the soldiers in the army didn't help either. It looked like she didn't really care and would rather be doing something else.
ariendj··on German riot police clear protesters for coal mine expansion
And that's why the workers at Kostal in Iserlohn are now out of a job. Doesn't really matter what was chosen if you can't afford it, unfortunately.

We seem to have a different definition of irony than Freak_NL. Fair enough :-)
ariendj··on German riot police clear protesters for coal mine expansion
I'm getting the impression that "the top" has already decided to go with deindustrialization. I hope to be proven wrong.
ariendj··on German riot police clear protesters for coal mine expansion
The irony here is that members of the green party are demonstrating against policies that their own party agreed to.
ariendj··on German riot police clear protesters for coal mine expansion
I'm in Germany and can absolutely confirm these impressions. Factories are closing and moving abroad. The misguided policies are forcing them to. Publicly traded multinational companies that are beholden to their shareholders cannot stay here, even if the management would like to.

The amount of vocal fry in her speech makes this really annoying to listen to.
ariendj··on Ask HN: What is your system for dirty dishes?
High end Miele is absolutely fantastic. I bought a professional grade machine (PG 8081) second hand and I love it. I have it hooked up to the warm water faucet so that it uses water heated by our solar panels. It cleans way better than I could ever do by hand and it takes no more than 36 minutes. The thing is built like a tank and they can go for as little as €300 second hand. My machine cost the first owner 2879 when it was new and it shows. Build quality and usability is excellent. I actually enjoy doing the dishes now.
ariendj··on Plasma Bigscreen
No they don't. They run ALSA.
ariendj··on Plasma Bigscreen
Audio passthrough on the pi is done using ALSA. There is no bitbanging of anything going on here.
ariendj··on Plasma Bigscreen
It does no such thing. It either plays out via ALSA or Pulseaudio.

David Rowe's blog at rowetel.com details a lot of the development behind codec2 and is always an interesting read.
ariendj··on $5939 per meter "Audiophile Approved" Mains Cable
This is incorrect. Accurate reproduction of low frequency content is still very hard to do and you can hear low frequencies for as long as you live.
ariendj··on Oggify: Download Songs Directly from Spotify
What has been heard cannot be unheard. Back in the day I did some ABX comparisons of various mp3 encoders. I unwillingly trained my hearing to spot encoder artifacts forever. I tested encoders more than 15 years ago. I still hear mp3 compression without trying. Bluetooth SBC codec is even worse. Wish I could turn this off but I can't.

ariendj··on No More Rock Stars: How to Stop Abuse in Tech Communities (2016)
> To fight this, encourage and support private affinity groups for marginalized groups (especially people who identify as women in a way that is significant to them), create formal systems that allow for anonymous or pseudonymous reporting such as an ombudsperson or third-party ethics hotline, support and promote people who are trusted contact points and/or advocates for marginalized groups, and reward people for raising difficult but necessary problems.

50% of humanity is not a marginalized group. Anonymous reporting will always be abused.

ariendj··on An Open Letter to My Boss, IBM CEO Ms. Ginni Rometty
I don't think hacker news readers have to be told that the people that worked at IBM up to 1945 do not work there anymore.

ariendj··on The Perils of Being a 21 Year-Old Product Manager
The autor wrote a long humblebrag post. A 21 year old kid does not have the experience it takes to lead.

Some OpenWRT routers like the TL 1043ND I have suffer from VLAN leakage. Basically the router separates WAN from LAN via a VLAN config as the CPU has only one LAN port. At the router's bootup, devices on my lan would randomly get a public IP adress assigned by the DHCP server on the modem. Scared the crap out of me. From now on the thing is an access point, not a router.
