arh68··on Tesla Cybertruck Unexpectedly Accelerates into Home with Rear Wheels Locked
It's unclear to me which axle even locked up. How would the driver even know? The witness marks would be flat spots, but no photo evidence is given. For all I know, the skid marks are from rear tires burning out.

The article claims the driver mentioned "unresponsive steering", but that doesn't make much sense as the vehicle pretty clearly follows the road (to the right). It's not like one would turn at the bottom of the dip (into the ditch).

I can't blame anyone with such little information.

arh68··on Using Stockfish to identify ideal squares
Knights like to sit fairly forward, reinforced by our pawns, on squares their pawns can't attack.

Bishops like long diagonals, and to complement the pawns' attacking squares (Ps & Bs tend to cover only one color). Also good for "countering" a knight 3 squares away (Nf6 & Bf3, for example, though it seems to prefer Bg2).

Rooks like open files, doubling up, 7th rank plays, and (in this case) the rare opportunity to line it up w/ their king (Rg3).

Queens like not being trapped or sidelined (by either side's pieces), good diagonals, good files, or both (like some natural mix of rook & bishop wants).

arh68··on How to fix “AI’s original sin”
> respect signals like subscription paywalls, the robots.txt file, the HTML “noindex” keyword, terms of service, and other means by which copyright holders signal their intentions.

And if they disrespect those signals & terms, and lie, what then?

> the copyrighted content has been ingested, but it is detected during the output phase as part of an overall content management pipeline.

Yes, but how can it be detected reliably? Considering there is much to be gained in fooling us. (think parallel construction)

arh68··on A Book on Linux
While not a book per se, I learned a lot from the Gentoo Wiki. Trial and error could get a determined beginner through a stage 3 install, I think.

arh68··on NPM and NodeJS should do more to make ES Modules easy to use
I more or less agree, though I could get used to just about anything.

( see also: ES modules are terrible https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29137663 )

To suggest deprecating CommonJS so as to reduce fragmentation seems so bizarre to me. Audacious.

arh68··on SQLite is likely used more than all other database engines combined
Right. In terms of installations, I bet textfiles still win. Doesn't mean much, does it?
arh68··on True Defamation [pdf]
Thoroughly wordy; this could have been 3 pages. Deeply unconvincing, to boot. (am I defaming the author by saying their writing sucks?) I'm more convinced "true defamation" is not defamation at all.

> as long as we understand the “opinions” involved in people’s reputation to be something formed more or less involuntarily as a consequence of receiving information being circulated about them.

What? Involuntarily? My opinions are certainly not formed involuntarily as a consequence of information. That's not something I can "understand".

One's reputation is not their property. How can my opinion be your property? Step off.

> It is wrong, all else equal, to knowingly damage an aspect of other people—like their face or their farm—in which they have strong interests.

No, it is not. If James Taylor has a strong interest in singing, it is not wrong to say he sings flat. It can be mean to criticize people for things they cannot change, but it's hardly wrong.

arh68··on Go east from Seattle
So it's hardly "go east". You're going momentarily east, then southeast.

It is interesting what a "straight line" really means, though, in different contexts. I would have to say this is a poor puzzle, though, filed under cheap word tricks & ambiguities.

arh68··on Ask HN: How would you chunk a large Excel file?
The C# interop API will surely work, but I wouldn't claim it's user-friendly.

I would strongly consider dumping rows into SQL, for more "natural" selection.

arh68··on My dad and I replaced a 100MB HDD with a 1GB HDD for $100. When did this happen?
I would wager it was either late 1996 or 1997. Perhaps the drive was used/returned.

In '96, it seems ~2 GB ran ~$400.

arh68··on Act on Press
Any idea how popular each is? Just curious.

It's the same in League, they're just called quick cast & quick cast w/ indicator. And normal cast, but I think nobody uses it. I feel like on-release (w/ indicator) is more popular when people can choose, but maybe not.

I like that it's configurable. Perhaps most importantly, some abilities are hardcoded to use the sensible option when only one makes sense.

arh68··on Navy cancels ship briefings after damning internal report
Seems like there are only ever 4 root causes to govt/contractor failures:

1. miscommunication (not seen here)

2. training issues (check)

3. not spending enough money (check)

4. decisions made by previous leadership (only hinted at)

I just hope the results are worth it.

arh68··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
I use the dongle, fwiw. It stays attached to my "good" wired earphones.

I don't really have any strong feelings either way about it. I dropped my phone once, and the dongle took the brunt of it (saving the expensive stuff) but I did have to buy another.

arh68··on How I replaced deadly garage door torsion springs (2002)
> but the risk is comparable to doing your own car repairs

"Comparable" in that it's way, way greater, sure. Unless we're talking dangerous car repairs, like using a spring compressor to disassemble a strut &c. Or using harbor freight jack stands..

When my spring broke, I thought someone crashed their car into my house. It's an incredible amount of energy.

Garage door springs are up there with lathes & table saws, in terms of danger (IMO).

arh68··on America's affordable house of the future failed
> “My experience, as you see,” said Fruehauf, “lends support to the complaint . . . that some RFC officials were determined all along to wreck Lustron unless they could get control for their friends.” [1]

A curious tale.

Sounds like a political failure, more than anything else. I also wonder how, in August of '48, Time reported that Lustron has got no steel to build its houses. [2]

arh68··on Home Lab Beginners guide
I absolutely agree. Windows Pro + Hyper-V + Linux = super good. And I'm a Mac guy, if anything.

Remote Desktop is really good, too. I use it all the time from my MacBook (though I mostly SSH, naturally). WinSCP + midnight commander are all the extras I need.

If you have enough memory/CPU on your workstation/gaming machine, Just 1 PC works great.

arh68··on Home Lab Beginners guide
Windows 10 hardly restarts a lot. There's no pain.

If I reboot windows, my Debian VM comes right back up, with all the docker-compose services running (a la `restart: always`). Like nothing ever happened.

So I just don't think this is a problem. But that's just my experience...

arh68··on Higher vehicle hoods significantly increase pedestrian deaths, study finds
Trucks sure are popular, but gov't regulations didn't "make" them big.

Given the popularity of F-250s / 2500s, which hardly meet any CAFE standard, the truckers don't yearn for the Ranger. They like 12mpg turbo diesel. We could repeal CAFE, get Ford to make them, but they still wouldn't sell. Tacoma loyalists keep the mid-size truck alive, but they're just a small fraction of 1500/2500 buyers.

People like big trucks, and that's fine: but why blame it on the gov't ?

arh68··on Optical Media Durability (2020)
Is anyone doing this kind of research on SD cards?

I'm more interested in reads than exhausting the write cycles. I wonder what the "half-life" of each bit/byte is: years? centuries? And how much better are DVDs, fx.

I've never had a Blu-Ray fail on me, for what it's worth.

arh68··on Takeaway
I say both take-out & carry-out. At least, I can't determine which I say more. Pizza seems to be "for pickup".

Kari-Out [1] makes a lot of the food containers, so maybe that's why I say "carry-out" (or think I say it). Something something, inception.

arh68··on Switch off bad TV settings
Motion smoothing is great on my 120Hz TV.

Theater is fine -- I have a home theater w/ a 24p projector. I wish it had 120Hz smoothing, but at least it's not dim like my local theater.

24p content at 60Hz is really, really bad (3:2 pull down what not). At least we can agree on that. That seems to be what "turn off motion smoothing" is about, to me.

24p content at 24Hz is fine, but 120Hz is better.

EDIT: I should say that the input lag (gaming) is much greater for smoothing, so even at ~30 fps I'd run my PlayStation at 60Hz no smoothing (game mode on &c).

arh68··on "No, it's less effort than that"
I would not say it has been "debunked".

The stories are real; they're not all "accounting misunderstandings" or what have you.

arh68··on Pulsifer v. United States, a case that turns on a federal law’s use of “and”
That's the most ambiguous one.

I'd say both QQQ & QWE would satisfy "press any key, 3 times". It's not necessarily saying to press the same key 3 times. "Press any 3 keys" isn't the same, because I could just press one key three times.

arh68··on Pulsifer v. United States, a case that turns on a federal law’s use of “and”
I've recently wondered about any [1].

It seems there are certain situations where I interpret any to mean all, or any and all:

> from any floor, you can use the fire escape to reach the ground

> ensure we have proper licensing for any software we depend upon

> press any key, 3 times

> aim to dress for any weather

These seem obviously plural, but I don't know if I should expect everybody to agree. Clearly all would be better, when it makes sense.

Still, more commonly, it's any single from the set of "all", for some all.

arh68··on The X220 ThinkPad
Yeah. I had an X220 (or X220i?) years ago running Debian/WindowMaker until the motherboard died.

I think a "tie" is fair. I'd say the MacBooks last a few years longer, though ThinkPads have more ports. ThinkPads were about as good 10+ years ago as MacBooks are now, so can we just call it a tie? I suppose.

Unfortunately, the keyboards on both have regressed to "fine".

arh68··on Client harassed by The Type founders for using Proxima Nova font on website
How anyone can disagree with you is just bizarre.

Don't like paid fonts? Don't use them.

Don't think they're "meant to be IP" ? Too bad; they are.

Don't think fonts matter ? Use Comic Sans MS the rest of your life, go ahead.

If I develop a website for someone and pay for Oracle, that does not grant free Oracle licenses to everyone I hand my work off to. Why would anyone think that ? s/Oracle/OpenAI/g. s/Oracle/whatever you make money on/g.

Just because one doesn't value the work of font creators doesn't mean the rest of us must commoditize their work.

You might think there are huge networks of font pirates creating even-better fonts than those run-of-the-mill paid fonts, but it's just a fantasy.

arh68··on GitHubGuessr
NB. You can move the code around, by pulling on it ! I didn't realize that at first.

An interesting game.
