aragorn2··on C# 8: Switch expressions
IIRC, LINQ can be translated to C# 3.0 without LINQ, so I guess it is syntactic suger but for C# 3.0. To implement it in C# 2.0 one would need to replace expression trees with “home made” query specification classes. It would be a lot of work, it would not be standardized, and it would not be integrated in the language.

So the real new feature in C# 3.0 are the expression trees. LINQ is only one place where expression trees are used.

aragorn2··on PayPal’s crackdown on ASMR creators
They are selling their sex appeal. Couple of video titles:

Scottish Murmurs - Full body massage role play - Ear to Ear sleep spa

Rose ASMR: - Mouth sounds, ear massage - Brushing your face, kisses

This is the first time I hear of ASMR and I quite like it but let’s not pretend this isn’t about their sex appeal.

aragorn2··on Terror attacks by Muslims receive 357% more press attention, study finds
You are talking about Wahhabism, not mainstream Suni Islam. Wahhabism is supported and sponsored mainly by Saudi Arabia, good old buddies of the US government. Both governments are inciting wars and terrorism and benefit from it. The only God they believe in is money and power.
aragorn2··on Terror attacks by Muslims receive 357% more press attention, study finds
The reason being the war that the US government incited (in the name of their “God”).
aragorn2··on Terror attacks by Muslims receive 357% more press attention, study finds
So what’s your point? That gives the right to the US government to attack countries at whim?

At the same time they block the UN in everything related to the oppression of Plestinians by Isreal and US puppet governments.

Like I said, let’s start with the biggest global terrorist - the US government that btw helped in the creation of ISIL. There is a nice analysis here: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/...

aragorn2··on Terror attacks by Muslims receive 357% more press attention, study finds
Yes there are crazy people. Nobody is disputing that. Everything you said, indoctrination, disruption, holds true with the US government. The only difference is that do it in the name of _their_ God (money, power).

One terrorism breeds another. Sweep in front of your own house before pointing out the dirt in front of neighbor’s.

aragorn2··on Terror attacks by Muslims receive 357% more press attention, study finds
Are you saying all Suni Muslims are terrorists and deserve to be targeted without discrimination
aragorn2··on Terror attacks by Muslims receive 357% more press attention, study finds
Even if that were true, what’s your point? My point is that if you attack other nations, they will fight back. And they have every right to do so. We can discuss about the methods of resistance. I do not think it’s OK to target civilians under any excuse. By that measure, the US government is the biggest terrorist of them all. You want to fight terrorism? Start with your own government.
aragorn2··on Terror attacks by Muslims receive 357% more press attention, study finds
Not as bad as sending out drones to kill civilians and creating more terrorists.
aragorn2··on Terror attacks by Muslims receive 357% more press attention, study finds
So you are saying that it’s OK to invade (no need for quotes), but it’s not OK to resist?
aragorn2··on Terror attacks by Muslims receive 357% more press attention, study finds
So your point is? Everyone should submit like Cubans?
aragorn2··on Terror attacks by Muslims receive 357% more press attention, study finds
Why is that? Perhaps invading sovereign nations and drone attacks have something to do with it. Or perhaps funding, arming and supporting apartheid states, toppling governments... Your country is a global bully and when someone gives you a taste of your own medicine, you seem shocked and surprised.

“Fun” fact: “...an American is at higher risk of being killed by another American with a gun than a European is of being killed by a terrorist.” https://towardsdatascience.com/fear-factor-guns-vs-terrorism...

So? If’s it’s domestic, than it’s not an unsolved problem?
aragorn2··on Terror attacks by Muslims receive 357% more press attention, study finds
Invading sovereign countries and drone attacts sure are helping in solving that problem. /s
aragorn2··on The Problem You Solve Is More Important Than the Code You Write
This made me realize I am the problem at my workplace. I honestly could not care less about our product. Initially I was there for the money, now because of the sense of responsibility. But, I’m hurting the company more with me staying and being this person I’ve started to hate.
aragorn2··on Ultibo – Environment for embedded development on Raspberry Pi
Free Pascal!? I’m in; for the pure nostalgia for Delphi / Object Pascal.

I just have to figure out what to do with it and my Rasp that’s currently collecting dust :/

aragorn2··on Ask HN: What’s wrong with me
It’s strange... I do love my kids.

I don’t know maybe I care too much to the point where some fuse in my mind breaks, bringing it to some strange dull state...

aragorn2··on Ask HN: What’s wrong with me
Thank you!
aragorn2··on Ask HN: What’s wrong with me
That is a beautiful thought. I like it.

Can I mark this as an answer? :) yes spending too much time on SO.

aragorn2··on Ask HN: What’s wrong with me
Someone breaking in and harming them is a real posibillity, I know. I’ve been through the war in Balkans.

Just another example of the senseless world we live in.

aragorn2··on Ask HN: What’s wrong with me
I don’t know if this is what you mean: I have learned to pretend like I care. To put on a smile on my kids’ birthdays, when deep inside I feel sorry for them. They are so happy now, not suspecting what awaits them when they grow up.
aragorn2··on Ask HN: What’s wrong with me
Thank you for taking the time to comment.

I am not in the US to call. I am sure we have a number for a similar purpose.

I’m reluctant to call - I do not know how it will help. I can imagine all the arguments; why I should be happy. Why I am worthy. I’d been telling them to myself for a long time. I’ve just stopped believing in them.

aragorn2··on Ask HN: What’s wrong with me
Ok that fits me pretty much. I’ve been feeling like this for decades.

Thank you for your comment.

aragorn2··on Ask HN: What’s wrong with me
Thank you kind soul. I don’t think I am suicidal.

My father did that to us when I was 17. I will not do that to my kids.

I am just so tired.

aragorn2··on Ask HN: Developer burnout – how to rediscover the passion, or new career?
And my spelling sucks!
aragorn2··on Ask HN: Developer burnout – how to rediscover the passion, or new career?
I get what you’re saying. I wish it were like that for me. I can’t get anything done. Maybe it’s the type of work. Upper management is always uhappy, users are hostile (for a reason), enormous technological debt paralizing all development. I am simply incompetent to deal with people, juggle the requests and politics. It’s been like this for more then ten years. I am sick to my stomack when thinking about our software product. I’m taking anxiety medication, have stress related heart condition. I don’t know why am writing this. I’m venting I guess. Not a place for that. I will stop now.
aragorn2··on Ask HN: Developer burnout – how to rediscover the passion, or new career?
This exactly describes me. I need to get professional help!

On the other hand, I live in a country with high unemployment rate, people barely have enough to get by day to day. A friend complained to me recently that he did not get paid for 2 months (he works in the public health sector). Compared to him, I’m living a dream. But I feel misserable.

aragorn2··on Ask HN: Developer burnout – how to rediscover the passion, or new career?
Your second point has made me realize that not having identity outside of work is the biggest source of my anxiety. Thanks!

I also can’t seem to stop thinking about work. Maybe it’s related to that point. I can’t enjoy anything since there is always “but you should be solving problem X” in the back of my mind. Maybe it’s the type of personality I have - if there is a problem, I can’t stop ruminating about it. It’s mostly work related since that’s why I do 95% of the time, but other problems too, especially when dealing with people.

I know I am not adding any value to the discussion - just wanted to thank you for your insights and to the person that asked the question.

aragorn2··on Ask HN: What's the best way to recover from burnout?
Man, you are describing exactly how I’ve been feeling past couple of years. I don’t have the balls to quit (wife, kids..). The only difference is that I actually hate the industry (gambling) I’m in (started because money was great). I’ve been here for 10 years and have domain knowledge. I don’t know what else would I like to do. I have some money saved for some couple of years off, if I really scaled down, but then what?

Being 41 does not help my prospects of getting a descent job. I am an average dev.

I realize I am not answering your question, just rambling. Maybe there is a takeaway for you here. Don’t be like me. If you are young, do something about it. With time your responsibilites (wife, kids, their school) only get bigger, and your options smaller..
