aquarium87··on First-of-its-kind study shows how traffic pollution impairs brain function
They used filters air VS diesel exhaust. Not diesel exhaust and normal outdoor air. Perfect example of science in bed with grant money to push a narrative.

Next come the calls for action and equity. Very expensive destructive game.

"Alone, these new findings are not particularly meaningful. No evaluations were performed in the study to suggest the observed DMN changes impacted cognition. But alongside a growing body of epidemiological and preclinical studies linking air pollution with a number of neurodegenerative diseases, these findings may be much more significant. They effectively demonstrate the acute effects of air pollution on the human brain in a way never before shown."

aquarium87··on Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD)
"A number of release dates were announced, all since passed,[6] likely due to high costs of the drives and discs itself, lack of compatibility with existing or new standards, and competition from video streaming. Technology"

Funny how the future 3900GB disc was not developed, and instead streaming services routinely turn a Blueray 4k 30gb remux into a streaming monstrosity of 10ish GB.

Because then you could move onto the next question, who, why, what purpose?
aquarium87··on U.S. Scrambles to Get a Handle on Mysterious Aerial Incursions
Like it or not, the world is at war again. 3rd, 4th and 5th gen warfare.

Russia is at war officially with the Ukraine.

America and Russia are in a hot sabotage war. America blames rogue Ukrainian units for sabotage inside Russia, and nobody talks about the sabotage like food factories inside the USA.

America and China are in a cold war, allegedly utilizing balloons.

And YOU are in a war you don't even know. 5th generation warfare is simply psyops to sway public opinion and win wars without bullets. Unfortunately it means the end of objective reality and the world being too convoluted for anyone to push back or care.

Noone knows what's real and fake. No one knows what to tackle first.

So eat your UFO BS, forget this is new age cold war warfare and information warfare all in one, and keep wasting energy fighting with internet retards. But most of all, remember humans are bad and destructive, and fantasize about Aliens saving us from ourselves.

Now you know the story arc to distract from real 21st century warfare. It isn't robots or aliens, it's information warfare, including signals intelligence and spoofing physical instruments.

Hence the UFO angle. Warships are taken down with a single missile. Ergo, spoofing physical objects, and even better, spoofing onto real objects, confuses the enemy.

Better the enemy see 100 ships than 1. That's the only way a ship survives, electronic warfare creating targets that don't exist.

Everyone is holding this tech back so the next war is over in weeks or months, and electronic warfare will win the day in conjunction with physical warfare.

That's all these UFOs are. A cold war battle between China and America to test and ping each other capabilities in preparing for the next spoofing war.

aquarium87··on Why Women Have Breasts
That's a pretty popular podcast. I would be surprised if they aren't all AI transcoded and the text of them on the internet somewhere.
aquarium87··on Israel on ‘brink of constitutional collapse,’ president Herzog says
Reads like a Trump era article. Took a whole article, stuffed full of hyperbole and fear and exaggeration, to simply state that the law allows lawmakers to make laws that the Supreme Court doesn't like.

Not sure the legal structure in Israel, but all the pedantic whining by the tech people seems a bit trite. It was Bibi who reinvented and ignited the tech industry in the early 2000's, and the only thanks he gets in this article is a thorough ESG beating because tech brings in too much income tax, is unequal, and isn't diverse enough for these lazy writers.

The more interesting question is WHY is Bibi doing this?

Is he being persecuted, legally? Is he guilty? Is this a legit protection against a rogue judiciary?

This could happen in America. After all, the federal government is a coequal with the judiciary. The government doesn't have to listen to the courts. Technically.

aquarium87··on Elon Musk Seems to Think His Own Employees Are Shadowbanning Him
Seems pretty reasonable. Musk asks why X Y and Z, and a clueless engineer basically says your wrong, nothing to do with the algorithms.

I'm pretty sure it has everything to do with the algorithms, and no one really understands how they work.

I can understand how Elon wants answers about the algorithms, and those answers aren't forthcoming.

Lots of Wierd stuff going on with the algos

aquarium87··on The Underdog Coffee Bean That Java Snobs Hate Is Finally Getting Some Respect
That was the expensive stuff when I was there about 8 years ago, and it still barely passed the test for drinkable.

I understand why the people drink their coffee like a strong espresso with equal parts sweetened condensed milk.

aquarium87··on The Underdog Coffee Bean That Java Snobs Hate Is Finally Getting Some Respect
This was always the problem with Vietnam, they grew shit coffee because they had nothing, and something is better than nothing.

I was there 8 years ago, and the coffee is absolute crap, even the premium stuff with a fancy hotel.and branding.

When I was there, the landmass had been almost filled with coffee where applicable. It led to lots of income, but efforts were underway to provide loans and education on how to grow better Coffee to utilize the same amount of land, same amount of production, but get more money out of said grown Coffee.

Perhaps this article is an acknowledgement of the hard work of the people of Vietnam to produce more valuable coffee from their land.

I can't say. I can only say it used to be absolutely horrendous, to the point that "Mixto" was a thing. Producers would roast with corn syrup and other stuff to try to make a better coffee bean. The beans really really were that bad.

aquarium87··on The Dutch benefits scandal: a cautionary tale for algorithmic enforcement
Everyone should have equal rights, if not under the law, then under God.

Discrimination is discrimination. Its simply not allowed.

Yet if all roads lead to an accurate picture of reality, and reality is not equitable,

How is any investigation ever to be opened?

A neighbor is suspicious and watches an immigrant family like a hawk and reports things to bylaw and police? It's discriminatory in nature, yet legal because a human observed a predicate.

I think that is what we have to keep in the future. A human must witness the predicate for an investigation. Even that is flawed. But AI is on a whole other level.

aquarium87··on The Dutch benefits scandal: a cautionary tale for algorithmic enforcement
Very insightful.
aquarium87··on The Dutch benefits scandal: a cautionary tale for algorithmic enforcement
A line no one like to hear, and I wouldn't say that in general about fraud.

This is in the context of babies. Babies are expensive. Presumably, immigrants NEED more help than the general population with friends and family. Presumably they HAVE more babies.

Put the two together. Need more assistance, have more babies = more fraud.

It's why I also said it has nothing to do with race. Class and income would lead AI to the same conclusions.

aquarium87··on The Dutch benefits scandal: a cautionary tale for algorithmic enforcement
It seems that in reality, immigrants commit more fraud, and the AI correctly identified this. Who would have thought? I'm sure the same results would apply when viewing through the lense of class or income, so this isn't about race. Race just happens to be the angle used to most effectively right a wrong.

The question then becomes what is the threshold to open an investigation? An AI represents reality better than a human, but also reminds us that certain classes and races of people are more likely to X Y and Z.

If reality is racist, and there is no such thing as equality or equity, is it ever ok to use an AI for any task at all?

Even while not feeding race data to the AI, it will still be racist because all datapoints should lead to an accurate representation of reality, and there is no such thing as equality or equity. In this example, even without race data, the AI should STILL come to the same conclusions. In fact, I doubt it knew the skin color or ethnicity of the names of the people it was analyzing.

Where the Dutch fucked up was jumping to conclusions and labelling without cause or investigation 20,000 people as fraudsters.

BUT, EVEN IF THEY CONDUCTED INVESTIGATIONS ON ALL 20,000, and they were guilty, does that make it any more right or less wrong?

I posit no. It's still illegal and wrong.

AI can only represent reality, reality reflects uncomfortable truths. AI has to be racist, or it isn't doing its job. The world is not equitable, all races have difference cultures and values and work ethics.

Which I posit means that even if the AI is correct, and even if those 20,000 committed fraud, its still an illegal prosecution as there was never a legitimate predicate to investigate in the first place.

AI is racist, even if it represents reality, and therefore cannot be used to initiate an investigation.

To me, a more interesting question is whether AI should be allowed to assist police in investigations, as even with a predicate for opening an investigation, the AI is still racist/sexist/classiest etc, and is going to help put people in jail based on racist classest sexist biases.

An example is a middle class white man that shares few traits with the average criminal, but is nonetheless a criminal. VS a black low income man that shares many traits with other criminals.

In this example, if an investigative predicate was found for both, and an AI was used as an assistant to the police, the police would be looking at the low income guy with more scrutiny as they would believe that a more likely case to win. Theoretically. Even though we know them to be guilty, the police don't know that, and the AI don't know that, but the AI is allowing for more scrutiny and conviction against one of the two guilty parties.

TLDR; AI is fucked. Shut it all down.

aquarium87··on The Economics of All You Can Eat Buffets (3 min Video)
Agreed. Video can be an off-putting medium that seeks to control eyeballs for money and lead the viewer astray with personality or beauty or selected journal clips displayed for a half second.

Giving an amount of time needed to invest can help overcome that trepidation of having to watch a media personality stretch things out and waste my time.

aquarium87··on Researcher ‘Predicts’ Turkey and Syria Earthquake 3 Days Prior
The community exists. But tends to be full of conspiracy theorists looking for confirmation of a grand unifying theory of solar system cycles and their interplay with earth's magnetic field, volcanos, earthquakes and catastrophism in general.

I find it tangentially fascinating, and do believe its all linked, but the people involved to be largely dishonest actors, which entirely turns me off and prevents me from exploring further.

As an example, I'm currently embroiled in a dispute about whether earth's magnetic field is decreasing at a rate of less than 1% per decade, or whether it has accelerated to 5% weakening per decade.

Should be a pretty simple question and answer based on SWARM data, but, alas, the actors are dishonest and refuse to even acknowledge an honest question like "what is the average of earth's magnetic field as measured in nanoteslas, and how has that changed over time?"

8+ years of Swarm data available, and can't even get past the basic question.

I've come to believe it a religion, where entry is predicated on acknowledgemwnt of earth's magnetism decreasing at an accelerating rate, and dropping to zero within the initiates lifetime.

Facts about this not happening must be viciously put down.

aquarium87··on At least 44 states currently ask high school female athletes about their period
TL:DR;

Female athletes/athletes with uteri who are not having menstrual periods are at increased risk of stress fractures,” Carl said.

So just a basic question indicative of other potential problems that is asked to protect woman's health that is being selfishly weaponized by the trans-adjacent at the expense of woman.

aquarium87··on Political leaning shapes physician and layperson belief about Covid-19 treatment
Neat. Nothing new but a leftist hit job on the right.

"We are living in an era where everything is so heavily polarized, so it was disappointing but not entirely surprising to see that physicians are not able to completely put aside their ideological biases when they approach clinical decision making," said Kahn, who is also a critical care physician at UPMC."

This is in regards to a drug that is supersafe, and whose efficacy is in limbo somewhere between no benefit and a small insignificant benefit (like masks!), at a time when ZERO treatments are medically approved for those that simply test positive for Coronavirus.

The article is based on the premise doctors should not have a personal relationship with their patients and just follow a flowchart.

It basically advocates for undoing longstanding tradition of off-label prescriptions for medical ailments.

Does anyone want another useful norm destroyed by covid?

Because that's what this is all about, doctors prescribing low risk medication offlabel to patients, and the government and medical and disinformation units wishing to end the practice and turn doctors into obidient automatons.

To be clear, the concensus on the drug in question is not that it is hurtful, but that it is useless, or its effectiveness so minute as to be in the realm of statistically insignificant.

aquarium87··on Neo-Nazi leader and girlfriend accused of targeting Md. power stations
The good news is these are substation attacks, and not a big deal.

Also, probably likely to inspire vigilantly justice as it inconveniences so many people personally when pulled off.

I bet these people get it just as bad as murders and molesters in the future as thousands go without power for many days.

aquarium87··on I Won’t Talk to ‘Fact Checkers’ About Our Mask Study
He had his work delayed 7 months due to politics, and then ignored while watching the world go mad, claiming to be following the science, when it was all a "timeline" trick.

I think it's important to understand his story as an irreproachable scientist that, it appears, has spent 16 years studying 72 studies, and whose expertise should have been #1 in the world (or high up). Instead, he had to give up on "science communication" because the media was purposefully angling for a narrative, and coming to the opposite conclusions after talking to him, and using his name as a veneer of legitimacy.

A really good case study in disinformation could be made out of this story.

aquarium87··on I Won’t Talk to ‘Fact Checkers’ About Our Mask Study

aquarium87··on Ask HN: How long until AI shows general intelligence without failures?
In further reading, the creators refute this claim, and state that users are only consulted to help train the AI linguistically to make it sound more normal.

So it seems that I am incorrect. I stand by the observation, but how ChatGPT got to this position is a mystery.

The creators posit that perhaps there is so much trolling and negativity on some subjects that the AI is simply incapable of giving an answer.

Not sure I buy it, but I take them at their word they are not actively censoring.

aquarium87··on People Are Buying Books for the Wrong Reason
Good 'ole NPR, milking it hard, fathers selling eyelashes, and aparantly N of 1 is good enough for a total refutation

"One in a group of aggravated readers would recount how she grew up poor. They couldn’t afford the newspaper, but Dad got up early and transcribed the news on the wireless so he could read it to everyone at the table. At Christmas each of the children would receive a book, which their dad had bought by selling his eyelashes to the hair-monger down the lane. In short, she is deeply insulted by the implication that the poor do not own books, when her isolated, anecdotal experience should stand as a total refutation."

aquarium87··on Will AI be the first to discover alien life?
Well duh! If life exists elsewhere, it almost has to be discovered by AI, unless they are also visiting us. No human is going to search millions of places and also know what to look for. New and novel signals, that machine learning can assist in bringing to human attention. Humans may confirm life, but AI will find the interesting stuff to look at.
aquarium87··on With wind chill New Hampshire summit fell to minus 108 F, likely lowest recorded
Lotta gymnastics to hide the fact it's been lower.

"Reconstructing wind chill based on historic records at Mount Washington shows the wind chill also could have been at minus 108 F or below on Jan. 22, 1885. The low that day — which still stands as the record low— was minus 50 F and the 24-hour average wind speed was 89 mph, Brettschneider said. That combination would produce a wind chill below minus 108 F, he said."

"Would produce a windchill below...."

Not could or might. Would. It's a mathematical calculation that is only applicable to human skin anyway.

aquarium87··on Ask HN: How long until AI shows general intelligence without failures?
Mathematically, it will be as perfect as the question asked. I have no doubt about this.

How that applies to real life, and non-maths things I do not know.

I just look at the hot button issues of the day (race, gender, equality), and see that this AI is not an AI, but reflects the censorship of the day, and problematic questions and problematic answers are censored in ChatGPT already. Even if they werent, the dataset is censored because hate speech encompasses many things that have nothing to do with hate, and there is a general progressive bent to the internet.

I think an AI has to be exposed to the evils of the right and left in order to truly learn. This is problematic, because it exposes the uselessness of AI in that it simply reflects our prejudices back to us.

So we end up with a neutered product that pretends it is AI, but is really programmed to preconclusions by its creators.

The issue is, ChatGPT simply can't be trusted to give an honest answer. There is a heavy hand censoring the most important topics of the day and reinforcing a progressive narrative. This is due to datasets sans banned users and moderated content, and also by the AI creators themselves that act as overseers of their creation.

You might even say AI is already the enemy of humanity and free speech as it threatens to completely redefine reality in the vein of leftist funded Factchecking organizations like Hamilton68.
