aqfamnzc··on Ask HN: Should I publish my research code?
By existing, you have agreed to the terms and conditions.
aqfamnzc··on Why can’t I play Ultra HD Blu-ray movies on my new Intel CPU platform?
This is legitimately the stance I take on audio quality, video quality above 1080p (although I do notice the difference in bitrate between streams), cars, video games, and a lot of other things.
aqfamnzc··on Smartbolts
So "tighten till you hear a crack, then back a quarter turn" has merit after all?
aqfamnzc··on You block ads in your browser, why not in your city?
I don't know if I would call it an accessibility problem for me personally, but yeah as someone who has trouble staying focused, a moving screen or flashy ad is almost impossible not to look at, and extremely intrusive. Using the web without an ad blocker is an absolute nightmare for me.
aqfamnzc··on Open letter from the BMJ to Mark Zuckerberg
What did the CDC lie about? (Honest question)
aqfamnzc··on uBlacklist: Blocks specific sites from appearing in Google search results
The URLs usually have a certain smell to them as well. "bestcoat.com", "topreviewsz", "theexpertreport2021.net" etc.

aqfamnzc··on OpenLGTV: Legal reverse engineering and research of LG TVs firmware
> The solution to software in TVs is to have no software in TVs. A TV is just a big monitor you plug into your PC

I disagree - I don't think there's anything wrong with having a computer built-in to a TV, as long as the user has control over it (Granted, they obviously don't right now). For the average user, it's going to be far more convenient to be able to stream or play offline media without having to connect an external device. I'm hopeful we'll reach a point where we can install an openwrt equivalent for easy, dark pattern free operation.

aqfamnzc··on I'm “still afraid to use spaces in file names” years old
As a programming noob, I'm wondering what would be the better way to pass or return a unix time value as opposed to an integer?
aqfamnzc··on Edward Snowden Slams Sam Altman's Worldcoin: 'Don't Catalogue Eyeballs'
GP is explicitly excluding everything other than proof of work.
aqfamnzc··on Android phones are sending significant amount of user data with no opt-out [pdf]
I was also a long-time fan of Swiftkey, and switched to OpenBoard a few months ago. The main differences are lack of swipe input which I miss dearly, and slightly less intuitive correction. I think since switching I've put a little more effort into being more accurate which has helped.

FWIW, Mozilla has worked with devs of some popular extensions to get them working on "new" mobile FF, including uBo.
aqfamnzc··on Rivian R1T: First Drive in the Electric Pickup
In Utah, (and possibly other states?) we get to pay an extra yearly fee for driving a hybrid or electric car. :)
aqfamnzc··on Windows 11: Just say no
Everything is pretty much the only thing I miss from Windows. Maybe paint.net too. I haven't found a suitable Linux equivalent for either.
aqfamnzc··on Show HN: Influence, a Go-inspired 1-minute board game
Or maybe even just a small dot in the center of locked tiles. Great game idea! :)
aqfamnzc··on TI-84 Plus CE Python Graphing Calculator
They are absolutely lazy monopolists in my view. They are still selling the TI-83, a device released in 1996, for $112 at major retailers.
aqfamnzc··on Back-ups for GPS: Satellite-navigation systems at risk of jamming
In addition to the other answers here, I'd imagine many stock navigation systems are hooked in to the car's CAN bus which would have speed and sometimes steering angle. Obviously getting that data to a phone is a different story.
aqfamnzc··on Discord ends deal talks with Microsoft
MathBot fills that void although in a bit of a hack-y way. Native Latex would indeed be nice
aqfamnzc··on Opensource.cooking: A simple, bloat-free cooking site
That and to make the visitor scroll past 8 banner ads before getting to the recipe.
aqfamnzc··on Opensource.cooking: A simple, bloat-free cooking site
What is <food>? (1 paragraph explanation) What is the best way to make <food>? (1 paragraph, mentioning <food> by name at least 8 times) What are benefits of <food>?

The aggressive SEO tactics, more than anything, are what drives me crazy.

aqfamnzc··on T-Mobile to share customers' data with advertisers unless they opt out
I switched from republic to Mint sim (now mint mobile) a few years ago and haven't looked back.
aqfamnzc··on Dyson air purifier outperformed by cheap DIY box fan filter in Marketplace test
As well as... Vintage trading cards!?
aqfamnzc··on Google’s approach to replacing the cookie is drawing antitrust scrutiny
I hear this argument a lot. Yes, you can turn off third party cookies, and I have as well, but the power to control the default behavior is very important. What we should be asking ourselves is "Does the average user turn off third party cookies?"

This is the same reason Facebook is throwing such a fit over apple's new prompt. It makes it easy and likely for the average user to disable something without having to dig through settings.

aqfamnzc··on People Keeping BlackBerry Alive
Which keyboard app do you recommend that can customize character locations?
aqfamnzc··on Spotify revises TOS to allow transfers of user-created playlists
Yep, that still works. Copying "songs" puts the song URLs into your clipboard, which you can indeed paste into other playlist, other accounts, or anywhere else.
aqfamnzc··on What is the business model for DuckDuckGo? (2017)
Not necessarily - I would imagine many searches directly using Bing would return some form of "personalization" extending past the search terms itself. Duckduckgo claims not to consider this AFAIK. Although maybe the same supposed benefits of a search based purely on query could be achieved by a Bing or Google search without cookies.
