aqfamnzc··on Hackers found a way to open any of 3M hotel keycard locks
How?
aqfamnzc··on Gabriel García Márquez: Sons publish novel that late author wanted destroyed
How so?
aqfamnzc··on London's Great Stink
They contribute to the smog
aqfamnzc··on Vyxal: A code-golfing language experience
Hmm, that doesn't seem fair. At that point, why not encode a huge library of programming challenges into the language spec to beat all the challenges with just a couple of chars? Oh well, I suppose it's not really a competition in the usual sense so it doesn't really matter. And code golf language comparisons are kind of apples-to-oranges huh.
aqfamnzc··on Rainwater everywhere on the planet is unsafe to drink due to chemicals (2022)
How am I supposed to keep track of things like this? Between all the chemicals, boycotts, etc etc etc I don't know how I'm supposed to use any modern product again. (Or primitive product, for that matter.) It's honestly driven me to apathy. I just don't have the bandwidth to worry about it.
aqfamnzc··on A drone that calculates coordinates using a camera and Google Maps
I've recently discovered that you can buy audiobook transcripts.
aqfamnzc··on Marginalia: 3 Years
I've been impressed by the results I see there. And you've chosen a sick name for it.

How would we really rule anyone out?
aqfamnzc··on Satoshi – Sirius emails 2009-2011
Haha, HN seems to have removed your demo whitespace. (Even in the source)
aqfamnzc··on Certain dogs are capable of learning the names for more than 100 different toys
I recently started swimming for fitness after not doing so since 10 years ago in high school. I get a rush of nostalgia and a good feeling whenever I catch a whiff of chlorine on my hands or hair throughout the day.
aqfamnzc··on Brave's AI assistant now integrates with PDFs and Google Drive
What do you mean that the analog loophole gets stronger? Are you saying that the AR technology is getting good enough that ad-blocking can be done there instead? That's true, I guess.
aqfamnzc··on FOSDEM 2024: PineTime Talk
I agree with sibling comments that battery life would be the real issue here, but I was astonished to see the $9 price tag on this. Incredible.
aqfamnzc··on Brave's AI assistant now integrates with PDFs and Google Drive
Who knows, maybe the climax of the advertising/drm war will result in an ideological split of the Internet:

On the one side: Big tech. E2E DRM, Chromium is the only browser engine sites will respond to, unavoidable and unblockable ads, siloed content and whitelisted domains only. Verified real identities. Linux clients and VPN IPs completely banned or pushed to captcha hell.

The rebels: Fediverse, the small web, fringe projects, experimentation, perhaps some "indie" ads. (And the problems that come with it: Spam, scraping, etc.)

I know which part I'd like to participate in.

aqfamnzc··on Brave's AI assistant now integrates with PDFs and Google Drive
Your "end-game" AI tool sounds good, and would work I think, but I think the opposing endgame strategy for advertisers is fully verified DRM chain all the way from incoming network packets to the display's pixels.

Network -> Web Environment Integrity -> HDCP. No room in there for an AI middleman. :(

aqfamnzc··on Expanding Our Partnership with Google
You must be referring to the default and large subreddits. I find Reddit to be quite pleasant (despite overused jokes etc) once excluding any sub above like 20k.
aqfamnzc··on Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames
The claim (which generally I'm inclined to believe) is that requiring a phone number drastically increases the cost to sending spam. That in turn drastically reduces the spam amount.
aqfamnzc··on Why are shopping carts always broken?
I'm enjoying learning about shopping cart / trolley-based game theory. Haha
aqfamnzc··on Show HN: RAM Prices
Thanks for being very clear about the presence of affiliate links.
aqfamnzc··on Friction is Good: Let's add it to our digital experiences
(Reply depth reached) I guess if you're filtering through a big crowd then indeed you could get really close to people and their wallets. I thought GP was saying you could immediately skim every person in a crowd at once.
aqfamnzc··on Friction is Good: Let's add it to our digital experiences
It sure seems like modern hardware's speed is wasted on making things slightly easier for devs, rather than speed or performance increases for users huh. If 29 layers of abstraction saves a little dev time over 5 layers, that's fine, but it feels like it creates this unnecessary requirement to use <5y old hardware to run things smoothly
aqfamnzc··on Friction is Good: Let's add it to our digital experiences
To do this, are they using some kind of modified payment terminal with extended range somehow? My understanding is that the NFC coils have to be very close, like single-digit cm to get any kind of power or data through.
aqfamnzc··on How deceptive design is used to compromise your privacy and how to fight back
Related - Once I switched to using a password manager, I use it as a convenient checklist to go through all my never-used accounts and request deletion once every few years.
aqfamnzc··on How deceptive design is used to compromise your privacy and how to fight back
Oh man, me too. The garbage that fills the homepage of yt I think is truly the least-common-denominator bottom barrel stuff. We really have raced to the bottom with clickbait titles, thumbnails with "WOW" faces and neon colors, etc. (And that stuff really works! I find myself tempted sometimes to click on one just to see if some outrageous claim or feat is really true.)
aqfamnzc··on Nine US states are teaming up to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps
That's what I was asking about. How likely I am to succeed at a DIY job seems to depend on the number of the "weird bits" as you describe them.
aqfamnzc··on Nine US states are teaming up to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps
Do you feel like the number of invisible footguns was manageable? That's always my concern with diy trades stuff, the things that seem fine at install but come back to bite you 6mo later.
aqfamnzc··on FCC rules AI-generated voices in robocalls illegal
If they were really smart, they'd parse and use that info to their advantage. Have info+autozone@domain.com? Send company-specific phishing emails to +apple, +wellsfargo, +$POPULAR_COMPANY every other week

Oh God
aqfamnzc··on Latest ChatGPT 4 System prompt (1,700 tokens)
I was going through my book collection the other day and it occurred to me that a recipe book is one of the only good ways (for now) to tell that a recipe was tested and designed rather than generated. That and a reputable author online publishing one, I suppose.
aqfamnzc··on Latest ChatGPT 4 System prompt (1,700 tokens)
That's a great question. They already do some sort of post-model filtering and output-checking, right?
aqfamnzc··on Starlink's laser system is beaming 42 petabytes of data per day
I guess they disappear as they approach the horizon because the light is spread/absorbed too much by going through more atmosphere?
