They have much more than Singapore tbh
aprilthird2021··on Singapore govt dating app uses Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm
> And the economy is far more interested in importing millions of unskilled adult migrants from developing countries who are immediately eligible for debt, rent, mortgages, and low-paying jobs to prop up the GDP, rather than a crying baby that will leech on public services for 18 years beforehand.

This is such a wrong idea about immigration and the economy and how it grows that it's almost more funny than sad.

No Western government is growing its economy through sectors primarily staffed with low wage workers. The US, for example has seen much of its growth in the tech sector. And as it's had huge numbers of immigrants to meet the demand caused by tech growth, real wages in that sector have risen for nearly a decade. And they outpace wage growth in many other sectors over that time.

But regardless of that, when an economic sector grows it's able to convert human productivity into returns beyond the pay of those humans. And often that growth allows the return rate over productivity to increase over time, making it more attractive for a business to hire more and raise wages. In such a market, when a population doesn't grow, there needs to be workers from either outside the country or imported in. You can't just have mandated degrowth of growing businesses. That's worse than communism

Wrong, a relationship that will last over time has to presume those values and boundaries will change. What is non-negotiable for a 20 year old is almost always not the same for the same person at 30 and then 40 and on and on.

Sure there may be some things that don't change (religious preference, etc.) but they are fewer than most people think. And like OP said, compatibility is often not a checklist or algorithm to maximize

Not really. He could have very easily been hiding out anywhere, even DC. But I'd also add that Kaczynski was actively committing crimes while unable to be found. Bin Laden had not only not left his compound for years, he also wasn't really doing anything all that time either.

It's clearly tongue in cheek to address the misconception that this is what engineers do
aprilthird2021··on U.S. postal inspectors shut down website selling counterfeit postage labels
Yes it was located there. But it's not like they can raid every house in the city. So much of our nations power is located in DC which has a huge amount of criminal activity and ghettos right next to it. None of this is proof of conspiracy and the US (who found Bin Laden in that compound and needed to do fake vaccine drives to do so) never found any proof of a conspiracy either and they did an investigation into this
aprilthird2021··on Responsible Release of AI-Generated Mathematics
Mathematician was never really a "profession" like the others. It doesn't pay well and is largely confined to academia. If you're really good and want to get paid, you don't do the kinds of problems AI have been taking a crack at. You go to a quant firm or some tech company where this kinda math actually matters once in a blue moon
aprilthird2021··on A Staff Engineer's Guide to Inventing Work
Why do so many people in this forum not understand the article. He is not literally inventing work. He is finding out what work needs to be done by reading the signals. Users and customers don't often know or care about the requirements of your system (are users and customers going to tell Facebook what it needs technically to handle a surge in users for its new AI that gives everyone on Earth a private VM to mess around in?). That's why you hire engineers. To figure out what needs to be done to keep serving the product, which is what users actually care about.

You're insinuating a lot here. Pakistan helped tremendously with the wars we were in in the Middle East. The govt did not partake in hiding Bin Laden, he was in an air gapped room in a secure compound and never ever went outside. It's pretty hard to find someone hiding like that. The US govt also did their own investigations and found the govt there did not take part in hiding him. He was hidden by sympathizers in the country

But even those temporary seasonal workers are in lower supply now bc the money doesn't outweigh potentially getting detained in a migrant detention camp or worse

Not Dehli but Tier 2 city. Yeah power cuts were very frequent, even multiple times a day (but usually once)
aprilthird2021··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Higher wages means higher prices. At a certain point your price is uncompetitive with imports. You can use tariffs to protect a local product against an imported one, but that would require a competent leader who doesn't get emotional and declare a war (bomb-based or trade-based) when his feelings are hurt
aprilthird2021··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I was told if we kill people in the streets and create concentration camps to put everyone suspected of being an immigrant in (even if they have legal papers, bc hey those can be fake who knows when your Prez thinks voting is fake) and send every immigrant back then Americans would be wealthy and prosperous and you're saying that's not the case in a country that's had extremely low unemployment for almost 15 straight years (excepting COVID)?

> there's talk that the new generation understands that alcohol is bad for your health, so they are stopping, but the reality is that we've known about alcohol's issues forever, yet people have not stopped. No way this will last.

I never understood this logic. It can absolutely change. Tastes and habits do change in society sometimes forever. Just because people did a thing a long time ago and a tradition has lasted for thousands of years doesn't mean it will continue.

You're right, but the idea that "Oh I'm not drinking it's just not healthy" is more common among younger people I've noticed than it was around people who were older when I was very young. I meet many young people whose main two activities are overworking and overly gymming/fitness activities. Such people drink a lot less than normal.

No

Before the War on Iran gas was equivalently priced to electricity in parts of California, like where I live, so a hybrid made more sense then. Especially as they are usually far cheaper than all electric vehicles
aprilthird2021··on Kids turned low-traffic NPR Spotify comments into a secret group chat
The kids only know each other as commenters on a video podcast which just stitched together trending TikTok videos. Since the only consumers of such content are kids whose parents ban them from social media, they got to know each other in that podcast's comments. When the podcast was taken down the kids, who all add each other on Spotify, see the other playlists of the other kids (one named "Chat here") and they go to the podcast in that list and chat there.

They did not fabricate research or get caught burying their involvement in fabrication. That's not what your link says.

They are alleged to have funded research which one of their expert witnesses relied on. They may have other expert witnesses and their expert witness may rely on other research. And their funding of such research can also be above-board, after all it is not completely and totally different from paying an expert witness for his/her testimony. He may have many sources of funding apart from them as well.

Also all this behavior is alleged. It has not been proven and the judge hasn't ruled on this motion from OAI et. al. The judge may deny the motion still, making the accusations inconsequential

Be brave and post a GitHub of your code that you haven't written a lick of and haven't read.

EDIT: Come on? Won't post your code for everyone to see? Why not just put it all in a repo, client and server both?

EDIT 2: Amazing. If you punch in notes on the keyboard for like 10 seconds then click the keyboard-icon button on the bottom right the website crashes

EDIT 3: If you click the main CTA then click "Let's start" the website hangs and you need to manually refresh the page for the content to load

It boggles my mind that Dorsey is even welcome in the SF Dem Party space after he posted on Twitter that mass amounts of civilians in Gaza welcome being killed by missiles:

I know SF supervising has 0 to do with the Middle East. But if he thinks like this about groups he doesn't like, what about when one of his constituents is part of a group he doesn't like?

Also crazy that 2 of the 20-ish members were employees of Flock and allowed to vote on this

> Yes, and I'm arguing you can absolutely vibe code your way out of a corner you vibe coded your way into.

Problem is:

Eng 1 vibe codes team into a corner and forces Eng 2 and Eng 3 to either review a hideous amount of slop code or pretend they reviewed it.

Now who will vibe code the team out of the corner? Eng 1 is too lazy or at least doesn't know how to get out of the jam and Eng 2 and Eng 3 are not janitors to clean up after Eng 1 all the time.

You might say fire Eng 1, but by all tracked metrics he is a 10x engineer out producing everyone else!
