apetrovic··on Apple turns monitor height adjustment into a $400 upsell
It's not alarming, it's just an excuse for a clickbait title.

Yesterday that monitor didn't even existed. Today half of internet acts like life on Earth is impossible without it.

apetrovic··on I used Apple AirTags, Tiles and a GPS tracker to watch my husband’s every move
So, basically, the argument is that is ok to make shitty tracker.
apetrovic··on Show HN: SlikSafe – A decentralized, end-to-end encrypted alternative to Dropbox
Another vote for syncthing. I have Synology home NAS, Syncthing in Docker on NAS, Tailscale on both Synology and my laptop so the IP address of the server is always the same, and it works way better than either Dropbox, OneDrive or Synology's own SynologyDrive.
apetrovic··on Why, oh why, do those nutheads use vi? (2007)
To be fair, lots of vim proponents obviously didn't spent much time in editors they're dunking on. The extent of sophistication mentioned for non-vim editors is "you can use ctrl+arrows to move around". Followed with "even if you like editor X, you can use vim emulation". And that vim emulation is usually just map of existing editor functionality to vim layer.

(I'm not saying that vi(m) doesn't have its merits, just that the argument can go both ways)

apetrovic··on EU tech sector fights for a Level Playing Field with Microsoft
Yup, the Chrome monoculture will save us all.
apetrovic··on Intel is reducing server chip pricing in attempt to stem the AMD tide
They aren't losing to AMD because of market segmentation, they are losing because their fabs are way behind TSMC.
apetrovic··on Vaccine experts: Covid-19 booster shots aren't needed now
It's like an insurance - you pay with chills now to avoid bigger hit later (more serious sickness or death).
apetrovic··on Hash collision in Apple NeuralHash model
I think rejecting one of million apps and angering one developer is a bit different than reporting someone about a child pornography/abuse, ruining their life and making a global scandal that can put future iPhone sales in jeopardy.
apetrovic··on Hash collision in Apple NeuralHash model
I find it very hard to believe that Apple will put literal future of iPhone (just imagine the amount of bad press if one false negative comes out of review process and is reported to the authorities) to "overworked, underpaid overseas subcontractor".

Apple is greedy, ruthless, tone-deaf machine, but I don't think they're stupid.

apetrovic··on Mexican billionaire Salinas says his banking business may embrace Bitcoin
I never understood this argument. These employees are real, living people. Even if Bitcoin rules the world and VISA ceases to exist, these people will continue to go to (different) offices. So, isn't that extra energy expenditure not really tied to the banking system, it's just office work?
apetrovic··on Mumble: Open-Source, Low Latency, High Quality Voice Chat
And yet my 12 years old daughter use Discord with her friends without asking me a thing.
apetrovic··on Star Citizen Progress Tracker v1.0
My main problem with E:D is that you can't casually jump in and play for 20-30 minutes. I'm just a casual player who juggle work, parenting, some side projects and occasionally I have enough time to play games. But if the pause between two E:D sessions is more than a month (and usually it is), I need to sit down and do my homework - where am I currently, what I want to do and then start playing. So when I have time to play, I usually don't have patience to do everything I need to do, and just get Oculus and hop in in some training mission to look around for couple of minutes. The game is so pretty, and Frontier somehow nailed ship physics, at least for me.

(To me Elite Dangerous is the VR experience. Anyone who love space and have a chance to try E:D in VR absolutely should do it. I refuse to play E:D in 2D, and I'll probably give Frontier money for the new expansion even if I will not play it for many months just in hope that the game will stay around in years to come to have a chance to scratch my space itch)

apetrovic··on Why I Support the Haskell Foundation
Swift is mainstream in Apple ecosystem, like VB (and C# before dotnet went open source) was in MS ecosystem back in the day. I'm not questioning Haskell influence and importance, but, what you think, how many developers use Swift and get paid to work in Swift every day, compared to Haskell developers?
apetrovic··on The faster you unlearn OOP, the better for you and your software
"OOP is bad because objects holds references to other objects. Let's speed that up by assigning every record unique id so other records can query some table by that id and reference it"
apetrovic··on Show HN: I wrote a free Mac app to OCR any text on screen
Very nice! I'm currently using https://github.com/amebalabs/TRex for the same purpose.
apetrovic··on Why I Work on Ads
The second paragraph begins with how much the author gives to charity. So I'm assuming that the author is very aware about ethic questions, and the whole piece is about painting the whole privacy intruding industry that dominates the entire world in pinkish colors.
apetrovic··on Apple's follow-up to M1 chip goes into mass production for Mac
My private conspiracy theory (supported by nothing) is that Intel promised to Apple good 10w processors back in 2014-ish, and Apple designed 2016 MBP based on that promise. And when Intel didn't delivered, they shipped Macs anyway, and either started working on M1 or cleared any doubt about should they continue working on it.
apetrovic··on Print Debugging Should Go Away
Can we imagine a future where we're using both a hammer and a screwdriver, depending on situation, without hammer-only and screwdriver-only people yelling at each other?
apetrovic··on iOS 14.5 delivers Unlock iPhone with Apple Watch, new privacy controls, and more
I have a dry skin and Touch ID works for me 50% if I'm lucky.
apetrovic··on Gravity batteries try to beat chemical ones with winches, weights, mine shafts
How efficient the system is? If, say, the machine uses 100KW to lift the weight, what's the output?
apetrovic··on Peloton cuts back on Apple Watch support
I have Apple watch. Apart from fitness monitoring, Apple watch is tightly integrated in the ecosystem - I can answer my phone on it, check my notifications, ping the missing phone, I have 1Password app on it for various PINs, it unlocks my Mac and I can double-click on the button on it instead of typing my password, I can allow my kid's requests for additional screen time on it, allow two factor authentication requests, tell my podcast app what should do with incoming episodes... Everything above I'm doing on daily basis. Leaving all of that just for a fancy indoor bike looks like a tough sell. But I don't have Peloton, so maybe I'm wrong.
apetrovic··on Initial M1 support merged into Linux SoC tree
- Grab and resize windows: you can try https://github.com/dmarcotte/easy-move-resize.
apetrovic··on Fish Shell 3.2
Sadly, this plugin is a pale copy of fish's power - it isn't folder-aware (fish will offer different suggestions for different folders) and it isn't context aware (fish will try to autocomplete the current line based on the context of the current folder, zsh-autosuggestion will just blindly offer history line that starts with what's typed)
apetrovic··on Use Touch ID for Sudo on Mac
The watch is already used on other parts of the MacOS (anything in System Preferences), I don't think that sudo is much different than allowing kernel extension to run, for example.
apetrovic··on Apple's MacBook revival plan: Bring back old features
I don't miss MagSafe.

I enjoy being able to sit on my kitchen table and plug USB-C cable on the right. And if my favorite chair is used by my cat, I can sit on the other side and plug the cable on the left. On the other side of the cable is a third-party charger that I'm using to charge my iPhone (with damn Lightning-USBC cable, when will Apple drop Lightning?), iPad and Nintendo Switch. And when I sit on my desktop, I connect my laptop to the monitor with just one (USB-C) cable.

Previously, I had to have two separate proprietary chargers and hope that the cable don't break; now I can just buy another USB-C cable anywhere.

apetrovic··on Microsoft Refuses to Open Source VSCode Python Language Server
What you think would be the cost for porting and supporting Office to Linux? And how many Linux users would pay for desktop Office, either Office 365 subscription or one-time purchase?

They're not charity. They have right to do whatever they want with their source.

apetrovic··on Bash 5.1
I'm on MacOS Catalina, with very pimped up fish config, and I don't see any lag compared to bare-bones bash.
apetrovic··on EU to unveil landmark law curbing power of tech giants
> You'll have to explain why a dedicated hardware company wouldn't be able to come up with such a chip given sufficient competition. If many people use language X, then it makes sense for an IC design company to optimise for that language (unless there is a near-monopoly situation and they don't care about what the market wants).

They gave you an example. Apple (software part) don't need to run around and ask hardware companies to implement optimisations in their hardware, and hope that implementation will be as promised (see: Microsoft and Qualcomm, and debacle called "custom ARM chip for Windows"). Apple (software part) can plan their releases many years in advance, knowing that Apple (hardware part) will fulfil their promise (see: Intel's roadmap recently, NVidia and Apple in the past). Apple (software part) can choose programming language that suits them and be sure that the hardware will follow. Apple (hardware part) can plan many years in advance and make obviously superior product knowing that there will be enough software support (Rosetta 2) to overcome initial platform switching pain. The whole M1 Mac story is all about the company that is so integrated that they can pull something that nobody else can.

You choose to ignore the example.

apetrovic··on A preview of x64 emulation on Windows for ARM
I don't think that Microsoft care that much about the one-digit percentage of their user base who will use M1 Mac. MS force is in the office (as in the place and as in the software package), and a) it's hard to fathom majority of companies all around the world ditching their PCs and buying Mac Minis and b) there is the Office package on the mac already, and Mac users are already paying for it.
apetrovic··on AirPods Max
I don't plan to buy it (I have Air Pods Pro and Bose QC35 II and they works well), but if I'm on the market for NC headphones, I would probably pay premium for Apple's, if reviews doesn't find any glaring shortcomings. Why? Because of the small things - switching between active devices on AirPods works very well for me (today I received a phone call by telling my iphone to switch to AirPods even if they're attached to my laptop), automatic detection of the right ear, head tracking (these spatial sound demos sounds amazing and I hope more applications will support it).

These things means more to my average and aging ears than some flashy audiophile names.
