aosaigh··on Show HN: Putt.day a daily mini golf game
Very nice. I'd be interested to hear how the real-time/multi-player element is working?
aosaigh··on Ask HN: What does your agentic software dark factory look like?
What is a dark factory?
aosaigh··on Ask HN: Why people still use GCP and AWS?
I haven't used Cloudflare specifically for infrastructure but PAAS offerings like this have huge vendor lock-in which is a big risk. Not to mention if that feature you need isn’t supported by their abstraction you’re out of luck.
aosaigh··on Ask HN: Why people still use GCP and AWS?
Because other people have different needs to you that are better served by other platforms
aosaigh··on Lunar Flyby
I cannot fathom what it must be like to witness this in-person. The pictures are spectacular but to spend time experiencing it outside the window in your proximity must be overwhelming in the most incredible way.

aosaigh··on Nikon Z9 Aboard the Artemis II Moon Mission at the Last Minute
It doesn't really explain why these cameras are particularly good for use in space except that the crew just like them. All cameras in this bracket are good in low light and have decent long lenses. Why are they any better in high radiation environments than other cameras?
aosaigh··on SpaceX files to go public
What was he wrong about?
aosaigh··on MacBook Neo
Anyone else find the naming odd? What’s the relevance of “Neo”?

It feels like one of the only Apple products where the name is completely divorced from its intended usage (or defining feature)

- Phone

- Watch

- Pro

- Studio

- Mini

- Vision

- Air

- Neo???

aosaigh··on Ask HN: Why is everyone in search of peak productivity?
Thank you. I've never read Marx. Any suggestions on where to start after reading through the links?
aosaigh··on 'Rescued men still owe hotel bill three weeks later'
It’s not “on them” when they purposely call mountain rescue who then have to come out and risk their lives to get two dipshits off a hill they decided to climb on a crutch.
aosaigh··on 'Rescued men still owe hotel bill three weeks later'
The mind absolutely boggles. Ignoring the disrespect shown to the rescuers and the hotel, one of them set out, in December/January, to Scafell Pike, on a crutch!
aosaigh··on Apple Creator Studio
It’s odd not to see Photomator in this bundle. Feels even more likely that they’re going to kill it off in place of the regular Photos app.
aosaigh··on Ask HN: How would you decouple from the US?
At the moment, you can’t GET INTO the US if you have a social media post that even criticises the administration. Is that the “free speech” people in the US are so obsessed with?
aosaigh··on Ask HN: QR code generator that doesn't require sign up
Excellent, thanks you. This is perfect.
aosaigh··on My Logitech mouse became unusable, Logi Options+ can't validate certificate
I ditched Logi Options+ and use SteerMouse instead. I wouldn't call myself a mouse power-user, but it's been good enough for me.

aosaigh··on Ask HN: Who else got pwned by the Next.js RCE?
This might be a hot take, but I feel like the blurring of lines between back-end and front-end apps with platforms like Vercel will lead to more and more of these exploits. I’m an experienced full-stack dev and I’m constantly confused as to “where I am” in a Next code base. Server? Client? Edge? Proponents might say “that’s the point - you don’t have to worry about there you are, it’s one code base” but these sort of issues indicate otherwise.

All platforms can be exploited I guess, but I still wonder at the complexity of the platforms we now rely on and whether it’s justified.

aosaigh··on Ask HN: Who else got pwned by the Next.js RCE?
You had to patch manually
aosaigh··on Ask HN: Will Kagi's subscription cost reduce with enough subscribers?
This isn't how business works. Pricing isn't decided on based on costs alone, it's decided by value delivered. More customers indicates higher value resulting in higher pricing.
aosaigh··on Ask HN: Which cloud provider do you like best and why?
Yep, I've a number of apps on their App Platform and it works great.
aosaigh··on Tell HN: Stall AI progress for the benefit of humanity
This is a patronising comment - first telling us what we should be concerned about than telling us there’s actually no point in being concerned about anything anyway, change just happens and we should get on with it.

What if AI isn’t like the other changes you’ve experienced? What if a superintelligence is developed (or emerges)? What are the implications of that? Can it be controlled?

The people running the biggest AI companies in the world are themselves worried these questions, so we should be too.

HN is exactly the type of place that should be interested in discussing issues like this and it’s unfair to just dismiss the concerns.

aosaigh··on Ask HN: Why is there black line on top? I guess not because of Cloudflare outage
I don't understand why clicking the black bar doesn't bring you to the post. Every time it's added to the site, this question follows it on the front page.
aosaigh··on Some people can't see mental images
I agree with this. I thought I had aphantasia the last time I read about it here.

Then I started interrogating all of the people who claimed to “visualise” things and it turned out we were all doing the same thing - conceptualising in our “mind’s eye”.

For example, anyone I’ve asked to visualise something with their eyes closed can also “visualise” the same thing with their eyes open. It’s happening “somewhere else” and not in your vision.

So I think the term “visualise” leads to a lot of the confusion.
