anxrn··on More Americans Are Breaking into the Upper Middle Class
While I agree with your sentiment, the article seems to be referring to being able to afford vacation trips, not that vacations are unpaid.
anxrn··on YouTube's $60B revenue revealed amid paid subscriber push
325M is the number of subscribers, not revenue. Revenue from paid subscriptions is estimated to be about $20B [1]

anxrn··on High Interest Savings Leaderboard
And so will HYSA rates.
anxrn··on OpenAI has applied for “GPT” trademark with USPTO
Yes, this paper [1] introduced the term.

anxrn··on Meta plans to lay off 10k employees
> I could see a scenario where voluntary attrition helps them get reduce size more organically and with lower cost than a layoff

This is exceptionally hard on immigrants on a visa, who have limited options to leave voluntarily.

anxrn··on Twitter suspends pg's account [fixed]
> there was all sorts of examples of them being a typical social media platform trying to push various ideas using their control.

Can you share some of these?

anxrn··on Ask HN: Indoor air quality sensors and other IoT that's local-first and not DIY?
This looks good, but this is an outdoor weather station. OP is asking for an indoor air quality monitory.
anxrn··on Y Combinator narrows current cohort size by 40%, citing downturn and funding
Despite the connection, HN != YCombinator
anxrn··on BP quits Russia in up to $25B hit after Ukraine invasion
They appear to have said [1] they'll supply (finance + deliver) aircraft (which presumably the Ukrainians have the expertise to operate, per [2]). They have not said they'll send in an air force (operated by non-Ukrainians), which as you point out, they don't yet have.

anxrn··on Mitsubishi plans to include scene-aware interaction in cars
This article is written by Mitsubishi engineers but in the style of a news report with a sensationalized headline ("At last" ...). I'm noticing more of these - seems like a new (?) marketing trend. Nothing wrong with that objective, but does throw me off - I typically expect hard tech from the Spectrum.
anxrn··on Is it time to remove reiserfs?
I presume by personality they're referring to Hans Reiser, the creator of ReiserFS, also a convicted murderer.

anxrn··on What are the most important statistical ideas of the past 50 years?
Very much agree with the simplicity and power of separation of training, validation and test sets. Is this really a 'big data' era notion though? This was fairly standard in 90s era language and speech work.
anxrn··on Google Tag Manager, the new anti-adblock weapon (2020)
Yes, it can surely be obfuscated, but ultimately there will be a client-side function with near-identical functionality prevalent all over the web. It's harder, but seems possible to build an extension to identify this function.
anxrn··on Google Tag Manager, the new anti-adblock weapon (2020)
Wouldn't it be possible for a potential client-side blocker for this to intercept the gtag() method invoked on the client side ("Tag Manager web container"), even if that function is provided by a script hosted on the website owner's domain, as Google recommends[1]?

anxrn··on 1Password for SSH and Git (Beta)
I'd suggest taking another look at how 1Password (or any other secrets management tool) deals with secret data. "the ability to obtain them easily" is not the case.
anxrn··on Why Peter Thiel Searches for Reality-Bending ‘Secrets’
I think parent is referring to the cohort of large management consulting firms (McKinsey, Bain, et al.).
anxrn··on I used indie hacking to sponsor my own green card
A family of four just tragically perished trying step 1 (albeit on the northern border).

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-60162500

At best, this is a perilous, uncertain and undignified route.

anxrn··on Facebook loses users for the first time
Feels like Yahoo in the days it realized it was losing the search arms race to Google and Microsoft. There was this uneasy sense of the underlying seismic shift and that the game had changed and you didn't have the best hand.
anxrn··on My Path to Financial Independence as a Software Engineer
While I completely agree the H1B is a PITA, it has been and continues to be the primary vehicle for the huge % of tech-employed immigrants to attain the sort of independence referred to in the OP.
anxrn··on My Path to Financial Independence as a Software Engineer
Not directly racist, but there's a huge difference in effective waiting times for employment based green cards by country, mainly due to the per-country cap.

Roughly speaking, for similarly qualified folks applying in the EB2 category in 2021, Indian immigrants (worst case), approval can take 15+ years, while immigrants from Sweden will take 2-3 years at most (was less than a year pre-COVID).

anxrn··on “Open source” is broken
A tool that inspects a company's software dependencies and generates a report of open source dependencies, state of support, and easy ways to fund (direct corporate funding, or even employee + corporate match) would be super useful.
anxrn··on Microsoft passes Apple to become the most valuable company
Since Sundar became CEO:

- GOOG has grown nearly 300% (last 5 years). It is by far the strongest performing large tech stock this year (>+50%).

- They just announced one of their best quarterly earnings in their history (highest quarterly revenue increase in 14 years).

By these metrics, Sundar seems to have been a great pick. If not for the above metrics, how would you evaluate the CEO?

anxrn··on Decreasing service fees on subscriptions to 15%
Reminder that Jobs initially did not support having an app store at all for the original iPhone, IIRC for reasons of maintaining the bar on experience. His proposal was to build "apps" for use in Safari.

anxrn··on HN 15 Years ago
Disney's market cap is about $320B, and Netflix at about $280B. It isn't unreasonable to expect that YouTube would be valued at at least that if it were valued independently (Alphabet overall is $1.9T - YouTube as 15% of that value seems reasonable).

YouTube seems to be on track to overtaking Netflix this year in terms of revenue as well, if it hasn't already. [0]

anxrn··on $365B wiped off cryptocurrency market after Tesla stops accepting Bitcoin
Why do people need gold?
anxrn··on Yayagram
Is LTE necessary? It seems that 3G or even 2G might suffice, and might be cheaper?
anxrn··on Moderna mRNA sequence released to GitHub [pdf]
Not Moderna, but this [1] was a very useful primer on grokking how the Pfizer vaccine works, especially for computer programmers.

anxrn··on Why are so many successful founding CEOs software engineers?
Sorry to have to ask this, but did you read the article? It explicitly addresses this.

> *Wozniak obtained a master’s in computer science in 1987 and does code. Though Jobs was brilliant and technically savvy, Jobs clearly didn’t professionally code; he did contribute to creative and technical designs

anxrn··on Why are so many successful founding CEOs software engineers?
Getting an MBA does not make you not-an-engineer. From the article [1] you linked, "He earned a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering".

Also, the article is referring to founding CEOs, and hence referring to Page/Brin and Jobs/Wozniak, not Pichai and Cook.

anxrn··on Studying the impact of U.S. immigration barriers on global knowledge production
Irrespective of which of the myriad ways you use to compare tax raters, the assertion that the US has "ridiculously high taxes" does not hold up.
