anxrn··on Getting Started with Brave
One of these is not like the others. I would genuinely like to understand why I should not trust Mozilla.
anxrn··on Ask HN: Is all of FAANG like this?
You and op might be more violently in agreement than you might have surmised.
anxrn··on US takes 'richest nation on earth' crown from Switzerland
I suspect using the median net assets instead of the average would lead to vastly different results.
anxrn··on Dropbox Brings Back Support for ZFS, XFS, Btrfs and eCryptFS on Linux
"have you not ever heard of our service?"

No I hadn't heard of rsync.net before. I even browsed a few 'listicles' and didn't come across it. I admit even if I had, I'd tend to lean towards more established clouds. But I'll certainly take a peek now since it seems to fit my bill. Thanks for the reminder.

anxrn··on Dropbox Brings Back Support for ZFS, XFS, Btrfs and eCryptFS on Linux
I'm also a Dropbox on Linux user, are there other cloud storage services with better Linux client support? I was considering Google Drive but it doesn't seem to support Linux at all.
anxrn··on Toronto adds more tech jobs than Silicon Valley in past 5 years
Not quite Toronto, but Google has a number of software engineering openings at Waterloo.

anxrn··on Suspect in YouTube Shooting Posted Rants About the Company Online
So, wanting to work at a reputed place for software engineering == endorsing every single policy the company (a collection of over 70K individuals) might adopt? To the point that you should be expected to take a bullet for it?
anxrn··on Suspect in YouTube Shooting Posted Rants About the Company Online
Give me one good reason why blaming a random Google employee lunching in the cafeteria is "fair".

(Disclaimer: I witnessed the shooting today, so not quite unbiased)

anxrn··on Police using decoy buses to catch attackers targeting Apple and Google shuttles
Why do Google employees deserve to be shouted at?
anxrn··on As Flow of Foreign Students Wanes, U.S. Universities Feel the Sting
This might be semantics, but a slowdown means exactly that: a drop in growth rate.
anxrn··on As Flow of Foreign Students Wanes, U.S. Universities Feel the Sting
Certainly not true for India (second largest contributor of international students, behind China [1]). By my (extremely unscientific) estimate, less than 5% of Indian students arriving in the US for higher education go back to work in India.

anxrn··on As Flow of Foreign Students Wanes, U.S. Universities Feel the Sting
Recent surveys do appear to support a slowdown in international graduate school enrollments ([1] summary, [2] original study).

Furthermore, this trend predates the immigration policies of the current administration, and I suspect this trend has further strengthened.

anxrn··on Bilingual speakers experience time differently, study finds
Interesting. This appears to bolster the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis[1] which has been the subject of a fair degree of criticism[2], particularly from Steven Pinker.

anxrn··on Burger King TV Ad Asks, Hoping Google Home Devices Answer
A similar (unintentional) stunt: https://qz.com/880541/amazons-amzn-alexa-accidentally-ordere...
anxrn··on Mark Zuckerberg's manifesto for Facebook offers a social dystopia
Agree. Another factor is mobile usage. The % of users that use Facebook _exclusively_ as an app is likely trending up as well.
anxrn··on The outlook for Bay Area startup space in 2017
The article primarily discusses SF, and not the Bay Area. The economics are likely very different in the South/East Bay.
anxrn··on Api.ai is joining Google
I doubt this is always true. I've been involved in acqui{hire, sition} due diligence for a number of startup at a couple of different (large) internet companies. My experience has been that the terms can vary quite a bit, both in the set of folks given an offer (all, all or none, some) and in valuation relative to average developer comp at the acquirer.
anxrn··on Google and LinkedIn announce massive land swap
Coincidentally, LinkedIn's NY offices are _in_ the Empire State Building.

anxrn··on UK votes to leave EU
> virtual indebtedness

It wasn't just virtual.

"The Anglo-American Loan Agreement was a post World War II loan made to the United Kingdom by the United States on 15 July 1946, and paid off in 2006. The loan was negotiated by John Maynard Keynes. The loan was for $3.75 billion (US$57 billion in 2015) at a low 2% interest rate; Canada loaned an additional US$1.19 billion"

anxrn··on Ask HN: What is it like working at Netflix?
I agree. I didn't mean to imply the Netflix model was poorer.
anxrn··on Ask HN: What is it like working at Netflix?
Netflix pays only base salary, no stocks (RSUs). Total compensation at most other comparable companies has a significant stock component. The H1B reports only include base salary. So which they do pay well, no doubt, it is misleading to compare them to other companies based solely on H1B data (i.e., base salary).
anxrn··on What every computer science major should know (2011)
As a software practitioner, I find it hard to believe the distinction is a question of degree of quality and thoroughness.

CS largely involves design and implementation of machines and automaton, and in many cases far more complex machines and automaton (for example, self-learning ones) than "real" engineering. I can't see how this is not engineering, so I'll have to respectfully disagree.

anxrn··on What every computer science major should know (2011)
I couldn't get past "Computer science is not quite engineering."
anxrn··on India Orders 32 Websites Blocked, Including GitHub, Archive.Org, Pastebin
All ISP's in India need to be licensed by the government [1]. Non-compliance with this directive puts their license at risk.

anxrn··on Spouses of H-1B Visa Holders May Soon Be Allowed to Work in the U.S.
Applicants from any single 'country of chargeability' cannot exceed 7% of the total number of available employment-based green cards in a year [1].

In practice, someone from Iceland or Tuvalu can get an EB (category 2) visa in about a year, whereas the average for someone from India or China is more like 5-6 years [2].

anxrn··on Amazon Is Downloading Apps From Google Play and Inspecting Them
Just off the top of my head:

- Store/retrieve state in/from DynamoDB or RDS

- Pull an object from S3

- Send an SNS notification

- Add a message to an SQS queue

- Dispatch email via SES

anxrn··on 4.4 billion-year-old crystal is oldest confirmed piece of Earth
The article does not seem to touch upon the possibility that the crystal was of extra-terrestrial origin.
anxrn··on SF Is the Third Least Affordable Major City in the World
"The researchers used a metric called a median multiple, which compares the average home price to the median yearly income for an urban region"

Wouldn't it be better to compare medians? (Median home price to median yearly income). It seems to me that you want to be robust to outliers in home price (Danielle Steele's mansion) in the same way that you're already robust to outliers in income (Mark Zuckerberg's paycheck)

anxrn··on Real-time Search as a Service
It seems like for the HN search, your ranking function is the number of votes (or very highly correlated with it). If this is true, its not solving a problem as hard as 'classical' engines, which compute a lot more. It would be great to demonstrate this sort of performance on comparable rank functions. I don't know anything about Elasticsearch ranking though, maybe they have a very simple rank function too.
anxrn··on Real-time Search as a Service
I don't understand what makes this particular service tout 'realtime' as its primary selling point.

Don't all search engines (and other hosted search services) aim for fast (100s of milliseconds) retrieval, show-as-you-type and realtime indexing?

Don't get me wrong. Getting all this right is very hard, and kudos for the great performance numbers (vs Elasticsearch), but 'realtime search' smacks of marketing copy.
