anttisalmela··on Donut Lab’s all-solid-state battery delivers 400 Wh/kg of energy density
> The company aims to have the pre-production equipment needed to manufacture prototypes operational by the end of this (2025) year. Actual production is scheduled to begin in late summer 2026.

Well, maybe there's enough prototype production for motor cycles.

anttisalmela··on 250MWh 'Sand Battery' to start construction in Finland
Wind in practice. There's only few hours of sunlight in the winter during the day. There has been a surge of electric boiler buildup by district heating companies in the last few years to exploit the periods of high wind and resulting very low electricity prices.

Heat is transferred using disctrict heating networks where 65-120 C water is circulated.

anttisalmela··on Finnish City Inaugurates 1 MW/100 MWh Sand Battery
Several cities in Finland have water based thermal batteries already, connected to local district heating networks. They have been previously used to store energy from existing combined heat and power plants, but now that wind power build up has created a lot of excess cheap power period, have been modified to include electric boilers.
anttisalmela··on AI, but at What Cost? Breakdown of AI's Carbon Footprint
You can also build the datacenters somewhere where there is plenty of carbon free energy available. Google has just recently bought two plots in Northern Finland, near some serious grid connections, and they're not the only one with plans.

Finland can build and has been building a lot of wind power lately since it's flat and quite sparsely populated but with relatively good infrastructure. There are lot of projects in the planning pipelines just waiting for demand. Electricity prices are among the lowest in Europe already.

anttisalmela··on Solar Overtakes Coal in EU
I don't think Nordics will be needing much batteries, Norway and Sweden have so much hydropower that can absorb fluctuations in the power production and usage. But there still will be a lot installed alongside new renewable sites, you can use them to optimize the grid connections.
anttisalmela··on Geothermal Energy Could Outperform Nuclear Power
Finnish energy company ST1 tried to make a deep heat district heating plant and drilled few over 6km deep wells. They wanted to connect the wells at the bottom but failed to get enough water flowing between wells for profitable operation.

anttisalmela··on Dhcpcd replacing dhclient for Debian Trixie or perhaps networkd?
TIL that networkd has built-in DHCP server. I don't think that this matters here, using networkd for client configuration shouldn't prevent using something else for server.

anttisalmela··on The NYPD is using drones 3 times more than it did last year
Entire police force of Finland (~7300) is only about fifth of NYPD (~33000 officers), but they have over 10 times more drones, more than 330.

anttisalmela··on A door at a Swedish library was accidentally left open
At least here in northern Finland you could already do that even with staff present. Everyone goes in with backpacks or bags and with self service there's no way to actually monitor if all the books were properly checked out.
anttisalmela··on A door at a Swedish library was accidentally left open
It's not uncommon in Nordics to have satellite libraries with mainly self service hours where there's no staff present but you need to swipe / scan your library card to get in.
anttisalmela··on Tesla threatens to bring in strikebreakers as Swedish workers strike
Empty threats, Nordic unions would just block all the imports.
anttisalmela··on Finland's average electricity price slips into negative territory
Consumers in Finland (and as far as I know, in other Nordics too) can get Nordpool spot priced electricity contracts, doesn't really get truly negative since you need to pay margin, taxes and transfer anyway.
anttisalmela··on Finland's average electricity price slips into negative territory

anttisalmela··on Finland's average electricity price slips into negative territory
Last year, 2000 MW of wind power was built, at the end of the year total power was 5200 MW. Olkiluoto 3 nuclear reactor was brought online, 1600MW. Solar power nearly doubled, from 358 MW to 606 MW. So far this year 500MW of wind power and 100MW of solar has been added to the grid.

Queries for grid connections pass already 100GW. Over twenty electrolysis plants are in planning.

anttisalmela··on Met Office says Northern Lights will be visible in England tonight and tomorrow
I live above latitude 65 degrees so auroras are quite common. Few years ago I had to deliberately go out and seek location without light pollution and watch auroras because I wasn't sure anymore if I had actually seen them live.

Now I atleast remember the delighted screams of tourists that were taking photos there.

Is this some kind of Russian media operation? Few hours old substack account with no proof that it is even written by Seymour Hersh, tweeted by both Snowden and Matt Taibbi.
anttisalmela··on JxckSweeney suspended (ElonJet guy's personal account)
The bubble that knows about this ban so far is relatively small. Will it reach the advertisers at all?

Edit: my bubble was too limited.

anttisalmela··on JxckSweeney suspended (ElonJet guy's personal account)
Why would Elon give any rationale?
anttisalmela··on Laws barring noncompete clauses spreading
Finland is currently transitioning to a system where employer must compensate for the time employee is restricted, and all previously agreed contracts must be either terminated before this year ends or employee will get paid for the time according to the new law - 40% of the salary if restriction is for less than six months, 60% if more than six months.
anttisalmela··on A thermal battery that uses superheated bricks [video]
We are going to have lot of intermittent energy production with wind and solar energy. This is a cheap way to convert that to continuous heat for industrial processes, instead of storing it as electricity in expensive batteries.
anttisalmela··on GE is laying off 20% of its workforce devoted to onshore wind power
Finland is having a boom, 70% increase in built wind power last year and 70% this year so far, and I checked the projects completed or completing this year. Most are Vestas and Nordex, some GE, and few outliers (Siemens, Eventus, Cypress one project each).
anttisalmela··on [dead]
No one is truly debating this anymore in Finland. People who have lived in ceded Karelia have mostly died.
anttisalmela··on Europe’s heatwave is forcing nuclear power plants to shut down (2018)
Article says that powerplants in Finland have reduced power output, but as far as I can determine, that's just not true at all. Olkiluoto 1 had extra maintenance break recently because of faulty fuel assembly, but is now on full power since last weekend. OL3 is still in testing phase, some issues with turbines were discovered and are being worked on and it's currently not producing any power. Testing program should continue within a week or so.

Edit: article is from 2018, can't recall if power output was reduced then.

anttisalmela··on Germany's Energy Catastrophe
Last 10 gigawatts of shut down reactors were all finished in 80's and probably had half of their design age left, all the really old were shut down already in nineties.
anttisalmela··on Germany's Energy Catastrophe
They wouldn't have shut down all the working plants. Not that it matters much, wouldn't have been enough.
anttisalmela··on Berlin prepares 'huge thermos' to help heat homes in winter
At least here billing is based on amount of energy extracted, so both volume and temperature difference are metered.
anttisalmela··on Berlin prepares 'huge thermos' to help heat homes in winter
Local district heating utility here in Oulu, Finland has 190000 m^3 underground heat storage capable of storing 8 GWh of heat with 40 MW of input/output capacity.
