antiismist··on Contenture - an anti-ad network?
What's your ad network?
antiismist··on Paul Graham: Lisp in Web-Based Applications (2001)
For the uvar example you could get could get close (from news.arc):

  (mac uvar (u k) `((profs* ,u) ',k))
  (def user-age (u) (hours-since (uvar u created)))
Without a macro you'd have to call uvar like: (uvar u 'k). For this example I'd favor 'k because it makes the behavior clearer.

(Did you mean uvar instead of upvar?)

antiismist··on Justin.tv: Hundreds of channels, nothing on.
Illegal usually applies to criminal law, not civil law. I do know that there are some criminal copyright violations.

My point would be just that it's not proper to say that copyright violations are illegal because most copyright violations are in the realm of property law, not criminal law.

antiismist··on Justin.tv: Hundreds of channels, nothing on.
It could monetize really well, actually. I'm sure that jtv has already thought of this, but they can be the hulu of live broadcasts. I've seem ad overlays as well on Justin.tv for what it's worth.

(Also, copyright violation is not the same thing as "illegal". It is a civil violation.)

antiismist··on Justin.tv: Hundreds of channels, nothing on.
justin.tv is great for sports broadcasts. I don't get cable but I want to watch the Lakers in the playoffs. So I watch it on justin.tv (I find the link to the game on atdh.net). It's very useful for me.
antiismist··on Why I haven’t been blogging as much
That's great. The email integration is nice and the UI looks slick.
antiismist··on Why I haven’t been blogging as much
I'd drop you a line but your profile doesn't have contact info in it. My email is idoh@idoh.com if you want to ping me, I'd love to see what can be done to address this problem.
antiismist··on Why I haven’t been blogging as much
Sounds like a business opportunity. Every business needs a knowledge base, but they are too hard to get set up and for people to search.

It's a problem I've been thinking about lately (currently #3 on my list of problems to solve).

antiismist··on Two annoying UI mistakes websites make
Thanks for the explanation. Because of aggregators I hardly ever see the front page of blogs anymore.
antiismist··on Two annoying UI mistakes websites make
While we are on pet peeves, how about the use of "blah blah blah after the jump" and then there is not, in fact, a jump.

antiismist··on Are Commercial Databases Worth It?
Isn't this the angle that Redhat, IBM, and now Oracle are taking? I.E. the software is free, but the support contract is gonna cost you.
antiismist··on Acxiom: the company that knows if you own a cat or if you're right-handed
If I were in any way inclined to use such as service I'd immediately stop once I saw the front page. It looks like a sketchy website. There's no way I'd entrust my personal information to a site looking like that.
antiismist··on Welcome to the vicious world of corporate name-creation
Every couple years this story pops up. I love how some company took Jamcracker.

>> Bahr stops for a moment, as if listening to herself. Then she bursts out laughing. "Listen," she says. "I take it back. You write whatever you want to write. If someone out there wants to name their company Jamcracker, God bless them. And good luck to them."

antiismist··on "I never said she stole my money" has 7 different meanings depending on the stressed word
While we're on the topic of wordsmithing, "verbal" means using words. You probably mean "oral".
antiismist··on Kevin Rose regrets dropping out of school too early
This is a sound plan if you want to go to college. I'd add to this that there are a lot of JCs that are feeder schools to some great universities, such as Berkeley.

I know two people who did the JC -> Berkeley route. One is still in school, and the other is in Investment Banking (either a big success or a miserable failure, depending on what you think of that career).

antiismist··on What's up, bot? Google tries new Captcha method
I couldn't figure out the audio captcha. People who are blind probably have better hearing, so maybe it's easier for them.
antiismist··on Decision Time For Facebook: Term Sheets Received At $2 Billion Valuation
Actually it was completely reasonable to have made those loans and I'd have done it too given that Fannie Mae was willing to guarantee it.

If that's all that you did then you'd be fine (everyone else is of course another story but business is business).

antiismist··on Ask HN: .net vs .com
Sure, I can envision some scenarios where I'd sell. I haven't gotten even one offer yet, so I don't think anyone will ever make an offer that is in the ballpark of what I'd consider.
antiismist··on Ask HN: .net vs .com
At this point I only know of one other Idoh, and he's about 3 years old.
antiismist··on Ask HN: .net vs .com
Yup.
antiismist··on Ask HN: .net vs .com
>> ...people like you

Hey, I take offense to being lumped in with domain squatters, because I have the domain name for purely personal reasons and I would never sell it. I was just curious about how much they go for, that's all.

(My first name is Idoh and I own idoh.com)

antiismist··on Ask HN: .net vs .com
Upvoted because that's the situation with me and my 4 letter domain name. I was able to buy it for ~$250 in 1999. Anyone know how much they go for these days?
antiismist··on The Andrew Warner Story
Supposedly there are special inks that help with that. But even so checks are hard to control, and the company I worked for switched to paypal for international payments.
antiismist··on The Andrew Warner Story
Wasn't it that they paid $.10 per user, and then, if they converted, got $1-$3? Without knowing the conversion ratio you wouldn't be able to say what the margin was.
antiismist··on Ask HN: What would you love to pay for if it was available?
Here's how it was done: http://jeffreyfalstrom.com/

When someone close to you passes away, you are distraught and have a lot of things to take care of. Maybe you don't want to register a domain and do design and stuff (most people aren't designers afterall). So they set you up with a nice memorial and take care of the details in a tasteful way. Think of it as a specialized CMS.

antiismist··on Ask HN: What would you love to pay for if it was available?
check out http://mem.com. They made something for a friend's relative recently (unfortunately) and it looked quite nice.
antiismist··on Lisp's reputation is so bad that many people don't even take a look at Lisp
I've been using leftparen (a framework written in PLT Scheme) for a project, this would be something like:

  (rec-set-prop! userid 'username "joe")
  (store-rec! userid)
antiismist··on Ask HN: How to Hire Hackers
Etherpad is a nice alternative for google docs fwiw (especially if the code sample is in javascript).
antiismist··on Heist (Scheme in Ruby) 0.2 adds proper list support, better documentation
True. With scheme, you'd only need to implement the core forms to get started: (LAMBDA, SET!, IF, DEFINE & QUOTE)
antiismist··on Ask HN: Why is it so hard for social media/networking sites to monetize their users?
Advertisers want two things: people to buy stuff via some conversion funnel that starts with the ad, or "brand lift".

The best way to get people to buy stuff is to find intenders - those people who are about to buy something in your category. Think google adwords. This doesn't work too well on social media, because people are interested in hanging out, not on thinking about some purchasing decision.

"brand lift" - advertisers in this bucket are super sensitive to their brand image, and they won't be getting the lift they want if it's next to some random comment stream.
