antics9··on Five minutes of exercise a day could lower blood pressure
I have a neighbour who's in his 60s. Blood pressure was of the charts while in his 40s. The guy was cycling to work everyday (and thought that was enough exercise) and was living a stressful family and work life.

Doctor never prescribed any drugs but told him that he had to start exercising. Signed up for judo class. He couldn't believe the amount of exercise he got from the warm up alone. Been doing judo 3 days a week for 20 years now. Haven't had any heart or blood pressure issues since.

antics9··on NewPipe on Linux, Using Android_translation_layer
It was an actual question for the community as these kind of questions usually generate perspectives and alternatives. There’s no need to read anything else into it.

antics9··on Sony announces PS5 Pro, a $700 graphics workhorse available Nov. 7
What's the point of owning a gaming console? You don´t really own the games anyway; as in being able to hand them over to a friend or sell them on a second market.

Why not just stream the gameplay through big mainframes like Nvidia GaForce Now and the likes?

antics9··on 1991 WWW-NeXT Implementation
Per Wikipedia: "Firefox was created in 2002 under the codename "Phoenix" by members of the Mozilla community who desired a standalone browser rather than the Mozilla Application Suite bundle."

I do remember from the time that it actually was one young guy who made a strip down version of the Mozilla browser that then got incorporated as a Mozilla product and replaced the Mozilla browser some years after. I don't see that mentioned anywhere though. History says it was Blake Ross[1] coming from Netscape but I don't remember it that way.

It’s better and faster at rendering pdfs. You can even highlight in the pdf and lookup words in the dictionary.

This is on my Kobo Libra 2.

antics9··on Pitivi – Free video editor with a beautiful and intuitive user interface
I do not find Pitivi stable, or beautiful.

Blender is easy to use if you want to start with basic editing.

antics9··on Gang crisis shaking Sweden
Shootings occur in all kinds of areas in the major cities, but also in smaller towns. Sweden has also had a worrying number of bombs outside stairwells in residential areas and in detached houses. Therefore, the problems are not only concentrated in marginalized areas or what the Swedish Police call, particularly vulnerable areas. Per capita, Sweden has twice as many gang members as Mexico but you can hardly compare the gang structures in the two countries.

Although it happens that innocent people die or get injured, the acts are targeted at active gang members and, more recently, tragically, their families to a greater extent.

The problems are significant in the context of gang crime, but it's not like an ordinary person needs to be afraid of being out for a walk or being assaulted, robbed, or attacked by gangs. In Malmö, which is Sweden's third-largest city and is located near Copenhagen, gang problems have significantly decreased in recent years through Group Violence Intervention efforts.

I'm not trying to gloss over the problems, which are significant, but I understand that the authorities and communities have the will, knowledge, and resources to change the situation.

Same here. Went from Emacs to Acme, while using mg in the terminal. Now I’ve customised Micro to get that Acme feel.

antics9··on Is Web3 Bullshit? (Transcript)
so like being a hipster?
antics9··on Is Web3 Bullshit? (Transcript)
What web3 is missing is social manual labour.

What made the early web magic was the manual labour you had to put into the social dynamics of the spaces you created.

Algorithms and blockchains may help to facilitate the creation of new spaces but they won't solve the social dynamics that create real human connections, virtual or otherwise.

antics9··on Is there too much CSS now?
Yes. Why?

I'm going on a stretch here and say that the html part of the interwebs is transitioning back to simpler and less dynamic hypertext documents with a lot less UI fluff. The strength of html are it's textual hypertext capabilities.

Also, with Webassembly I do not see the point of expanding the UI capabilities of html.

antics9··on My next Mac might be the last
Try Fedora. My iMac from 2011 is still running strong on that. Same on my XPS 13. Haven't needed to do any special configuration yet.
antics9··on Ask HN: Have you ever heard of users demonstrating against software?
I sometimes wonder if these types of administrative systems, which are really important for the well being of people and the development of society as a whole, are made to have a horrible user experience on purpose.
antics9··on Digital Gardening
That is a great metaphor. I find it very calming to tend to my website[0].

The operating system is the soil and the html-pages the green stuff.

antics9··on “58 bytes of CSS to look great nearly everywhere” mkws theme
I played around with this the last time it was posted here and this is my take. 50 bytes and looks great everywhere:

html{margin:0 auto;max-width:80ch;line-height:1.6}

Example: https://chai.guru/www/

antics9··on 58 bytes of CSS to look great nearly everywhere
This will work in obscure browsers like Netsurf as well:

html{ margin:0 auto; max-width:80ch; padding:0.6em; font-family:serif; line-height:1.6; background:#FFF; color:#222 } h1,h2,h3{color:#444} img{width:100%}

antics9··on Windows Will Die: 90 Minutes to Do 5 Minutes of Work
In my office I do traditional office work by the computer. Windows and it's Office applications is such a pain for your visual and muscle memory. That is one reason for why it being really slow to work with.

The second reason is the sluggishness in each and every application Microsoft ships.

The third reason is the one the author experienced. Really slow and intrusive updating which gets worse the longer you go without rebooting or booting into the os.

antics9··on Podcasting is just radio now
I used to listen to Binary Revolution Radio[1] around 2005-2007. Also 2600’s Off the hook.

From 2007 and onwards I had my iPod loaded with various podcasts every week.

We need to develop a social aspect to search where results are also moderated and curated by humans in some kind of way.
antics9··on I spent a year designing a low profile, minimal mechanical keyboard
Beautiful work and aesthetics!

Please design a keyboard that one can reprogram the keys directly on the hardware (caps to ctrl and the like).

Also where you can program macros and save them into profiles. That way, emacs keys would work everywhere.

antics9··on Ask HN: How to deal with children's online habits?
What we should be doing as a sort of collective parenting is curating Youtube playlists and categorize them with good, informational, fun and inspiring videos. Then we limit the children's access to that curated material only.
