antfarm··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (July 2025)
Can you elaborate on BlueSky native apps being bad because they are written in TypeScript?
antfarm··on Japanese grandparents create life-size Totoro with bus stop for grandkids (2020)
It’s not an actual bus stop. The bus stop is part of the installation. It depicts the scene where Totoro takes the cat bus [1]. But I was hoping it had an umbrella too.

antfarm··on AI is turning Apple into a "loser"
AI for AI's sake might as well be a losing strategy. Apple will probably be fine.
antfarm··on Ask HN: What problem would you solve with unlimited resources?
Education is probably not enough. Maybe only a nature cult or religion could save the planet. I say this as a life-long atheist.
antfarm··on Ask HN: What problem would you solve with unlimited resources?
True, my comment implied more than was actually said.
antfarm··on Ask HN: What problem would you solve with unlimited resources?
Being "well-educated" is not the only desirable outcome of education.
antfarm··on Ask HN: What problem would you solve with unlimited resources?
Would you like to die with a young body, or prefer not to die at all? Serious question.

antfarm··on Ask HN: What problem would you solve with unlimited resources?
I for one love this planet and would never want to leave it for an existence on life support in a hostile environment, fully dependent on technology.

What do you propose to do with life on Earth while you put all your unlimited resources into your flight plan, let it burn?

antfarm··on Ask HN: What problem would you solve with unlimited resources?
Reading some of the answers in this thread, I think I would put all my resources into a global education program.

In my eyes the greatest challenge is to find a way to enable humanity to live in a way that does no longer destroy the ecosystem it relies on.

Unfortunately, the solution won't be just technological but rather social, educational and political.

We must find ways to stop overconsumption, overpopulation and to teach children (and people in general) the value of our natural environment.

antfarm··on Unregulated tech tests: Thiel, Altman and co want Freedom Cities
You would like to watch yet another step towards the dismantling of representative democracy in the United States as an experiment? There is enough happening right now that demands your attention.
antfarm··on Fake bands and artificial songs are taking over YouTube and Spotify
Spotify has been accused of recommending their own AI-generated fake artists in order to avoid paying royalties to real artists.

antfarm··on OpenAI to buy AI startup from Jony Ive
$6.5 billion? Not bad for a company that doesn't even have a website.

antfarm··on Lua for Elixir
Suffixing a name with -ex often results in unique names, which helps filtering search results. I see a slight problem with name ending on an s though.

Also, aren't you the author of jqex? ;)

That discussion is about a tweet that has since been deleted.
antfarm··on Grok answers unrelated queries with long paragraphs about "white genocide"
I got redirected here via this (only) post in the discussion of a news story on TechCrunch that looked like saying that the article is already being discussed in a different thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43991641

I didn't check the title and was under the impression that this discussion was also about the TechCrunch story, thus my question why this discussion was flagged.

"Bonfire is an open-source framework for building federated digital spaces where people can gather, interact, and form communities online."

Further down the page it says it is built in Elixir with Phoenix/LiveView and PostgreSQL.

antfarm··on Mac Themes Garden
Good memories! Back in the days I used Kaleidoscope to style my PowerMac (System 7.5) to look like BeOS, but most importantly, I had an extension that gave me the column browser in the Finder that I had seen on the NeXT Cubes at university. In most courses, I was the only student who used a Mac for homework assignments.
antfarm··on Bloat is still software's biggest vulnerability (2024)
FWIW, I started learning Elixir and OTP to overcome architectural bloat in future projects.

The Erlang ecosystem has many useful abstractions at just about the right level that allow you to build the simplest possible custom solution instead of reaching for a 3rd party solution for a component of your (distributed) system.

Building just the right wheel for the task at hand does not mean you have to reinvent it first.

For those who, like me, only knew Larry Wall’s quote “Lazyness is a virtue”, here are all three:
