anoxor··on Why insurers worry the world could soon become uninsurable
“the overall climate is changing due solely to human influence.”

Way past anything scientific. Spend 2 minutes googling “anthrophemoric co2 percentage”

anoxor··on DOGE's only public ledger is riddled with mistakes
Biden added 1 trillion dollars every 100 days to the debt in the last year. Not in war or recession.

He used inflation to hide the issue in the price of everything else on top of that.

anoxor··on DOGE's only public ledger is riddled with mistakes
Both sides for the past decades have been terrible.
anoxor··on DOGE's only public ledger is riddled with mistakes
Sure, where are the nytimes articles that praise and highlight the good cuts?
anoxor··on DOGE's only public ledger is riddled with mistakes
Totally agree. I think the debt is at 100k per taxpayer. Either taxes or inflation will have to be used to pay that.
anoxor··on DOGE's only public ledger is riddled with mistakes
I like that the focus is on the issues with the disruptors that have been running for a few weeks, not the egregious spending for decades.
anoxor··on Berkeley's upzoning would be among nation's largest
(Implies the lesser human who think having kids isn’t a low key evil for killing the earth)
anoxor··on Ask HN: What is the current driver of tech layoffs?
The majority of wall street has accepted that there will be a recession, and interest rates are triple what they were a few years ago.
anoxor··on Toxic comments are associated with reduced volunteer activity on Wikipedia
Trans panic?

Totally disagree, it’s now entirely legal in many places for a predatory man to say he identifies as a woman, and change in spaces previously created to keep women safe.

And yes, thanks, I do like thinking about issues of justice, morality, and politics.

https://www.economist.com/united-states/2021/01/30/putting-t...

Excellent example. Is it possible for a convicted criminal to game compassion to be moved from a men’s to women’s prison. Would anyone lie in that situation? There is probably a whole lot more people to take advantage of if your a convicted predator in a woman’s prison.

anoxor··on Toxic comments are associated with reduced volunteer activity on Wikipedia
There were women's spaces (bathrooms / changing rooms) for example that kept women safe from predatory men.

Who should be allowed in those? Is it defined by the clothes?

If a predatory man / bad actor decides to put on those clothes to abuse the system, then what? What if the predatory man / bad actor decides to hang just below the bar of illegality, and creep on women long term?

anoxor··on Saving CO2 using location and time shifting in Azure
Add to that the fact that 30% of physics and chemistry can't be replicated.

Science is not an unbiased and altruistic endeavor these days.

It's not surprising the sugar industry funded science demonizing fat, cigarette companies "proved" that they didn't cause cancer, etc

anoxor··on What questions can tech CEOs be asked, to guage their moral trustworthiness?
I mean, the nazi’s, Chinese communist party, and ISIS all have a moral code they adhere to.

I think, WHICH moral code you choose has some relevance here.

anoxor··on What questions can tech CEOs be asked, to guage their moral trustworthiness?
By what standard do you define morality?
anoxor··on How the gas turbine conquered the electric power industry
> Electricity during the daytime will be free

> Panels will be cheap as dirt

If you don’t consider the capital of a panel then sure free / cheap as dirt.

Then the sun goes down and the wind doesn’t happen to blow, so you fire up your gas turbine.

anoxor··on I accidentally saved my company half a million dollars
Government shutdowns that made it more difficult or impossible to shop outside of big stores or online would be as big or bigger issue here.
anoxor··on First malaria vaccine reduces early childhood mortality
I have a Ph.D. in a hard science, so I guess I'm not totally unaware of how science works. Let's say, I have lived experience as to why 30% of physics and chemistry research can't be replicated.

Putting 100% faith and trust in a "corporate funded vaccine trials" is something I would suggest against given the potential monetary gains from those conducting it.

anoxor··on First malaria vaccine reduces early childhood mortality
if 30% of chemistry and physics papers can't be replicated, and something more like 70% of sociology and phycology papers can't be replicated, do you think that clinic trials might have a less than 100% trustworthy due to the possible monetary gains from the company conducting them?

opioids went through clinical trials, no?

anoxor··on First malaria vaccine reduces early childhood mortality
Consider your argument and opioids, where nearly 1000 people a week overdosed on at the peak?

Also consider "a scientist is as easy to buy as a politician".

Cigarette were considered to not cause cancer backed by science.

On top of that, the replication crisis in even chemistry and physics is seeing 30% of results can't be replicated.

The system is far more busted than people think.

anoxor··on X illegally fired employee who publicly challenged return-to-work plans
Super deceptive title then.
anoxor··on Engineered material can reconnect severed nerves
30 % of physics and chemistry can’t be replicated. 70 % of soft science can’t be replicated. Most of what we know about sociology may just be fake, and given that a huge foundation of progressive thought around rase, sex, and gender is based on this, this is a big problem.

at a minimum, this isn’t far off

anoxor··on Searches for Noah's Ark
This seems super relevant to tech, and not just something you'd find on reddit /r/atheism
anoxor··on Record low sea ice led to catastrophic breeding failure of emperor penguins
Or, we are given a constant stream of the absolute worst news around the world.

How about the earth has greened by 15% in the recent decade, turning semi arid regions into forests. How about the coral reefs that were in absolute collapse are coming back?

Somehow only the maximum gloom and doom is communicated…

anoxor··on Harvard dishonesty expert accused of dishonesty
We have decided we are a post-truth society. Turns out solving that problem is non-trivial when we rely on experts that are themselves human who view the world as post-truth.
anoxor··on The 1% of the population accountable for 63 % of all violent crime convictions (2013)
Have you heard people seriously discuss what would be required to have men catch to women and be 50% of college graduates?

If the situation were reversed, would there be advocates for increasing the graduation of women to 50%

anoxor··on NIH restarts bat virus grant
I mean, modifying a bat virus to be more infectious to human and then doing so in a lab that only requires masks not full body suits. How many millions died, how many suffered, what did we lose?

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that is a terrible idea. “Sticking our head in the sand” appears to not fit this use case very well

anoxor··on The Great Electrician Shortage
There are men at the top. What is the demographic at the bottom (garbage workers, manual workers, farm labor). Which sex goes to prison more, commits more suicides, dies in war, and loses custody battles the vast majority of the time?

Have you heard of the term toxic masculinity, weaponized incompetence, patriarchal, misogyny used? Are women discussed the same way? Are women ever misandrist?

anoxor··on ‘America does so much more to subsidise affluence than alleviate poverty’
Honestly, part of the reason trump is relevant is because the left hates him. He is constantly one the news for seemingly no reason. One way to distract from a recession or bad policy is constantly reminding people of there hatred for the other side.

Also, there is absolutely manipulation on both sides. Look at news headlines about a transgender individual shooting at a Christian school that targeted the pastor. Notice if transgender or Christian is in the news title. If it was a white Christian male shooting a black school, would the identity of the shooter or school be important to put in the title.

We are a bit of a mess in the US, but it’s messy everywhere. Despite the mess, it’s honestly one of the better places to live if you don’t enrage yourself on the news cycle.

anoxor··on ‘America does so much more to subsidise affluence than alleviate poverty’
So why do the parties split the vote 51 / 49 over and over and flip every 8 years if 90% think the same as one party?
anoxor··on ‘America does so much more to subsidise affluence than alleviate poverty’
And plenty have been so confident of their political position, that instead of trying to find if there is any truth in their opponents arguments, they instead vilify / demonize them so they don’t need to do the harder internal work of seriously challenging and perhaps refining their otherwise flawless world view.
