anonygler··on Airtable lays off over 250
The previous Chief Product Officer has a great background in consumer products... which is at odds with Airtable's focus on Enterprise SaaS.
anonygler··on It's not Ruby that's slow, it's your database
It’s definitely ruby that’s slow. Your database may also be slow.

I love ruby. But it’s slow. It’s a great choice for a lot of things.

anonygler··on Long Covid: Hair loss and sexual dysfunction among wider symptoms, study finds
Or maybe to take exercise and nutrition seriously.
anonygler··on San Francisco is spending $1.7M on one public toilet
Counterpoint: California residents would've blocked the Condo development using CEQA and it'd be a hybrid parking lot/homeless encampment. Checkmate indeed.

It's a good thing the Millennium Tower is still standing.

anonygler··on San Francisco is spending $1.7M on one public toilet
Meanwhile, in Florida:

California is a failed experiment.

anonygler··on Lowest “Who is hiring?” Post Count in 30 Months
I feel like people are trying to wish the economy into a recession / depression, but I really don't see it happening. I do see some belt tightening wrt SaaS expenditures. There's still a massive demand for labor.

While the housing market has fallen, the actual cost of buying a house is still rising. Rate increases have well outpaced the list price reductions.

So I think all this talk of a recession is just a bunch of reporters trying to jeer people into that state of mind for clicks.

anonygler··on Advertisers suspend Twitter marketing because their ads appear alongside CP
Twitter is more concerned with political wrong-think than with CP.
anonygler··on Apple Announces iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus
I love my mini. I wish they fixed battery life before cancelling so I could coast for a few more years.
anonygler··on High-dose Vitamin B6 reduces anxiety and strengthens visual surround suppression
Devils advocate: What if Australian's were right all along and marmite actually is good? And the simple joy of marmite cured depression and anxiety?
anonygler··on California approves bill to punish doctors who spread false information
Vinay Prasad, who has been wildly correct/vindicated would’ve been punished. Speaking out about learning loss and child masking would’ve been punished. This is legislation from the new authoritarian left. Liberalism is dead.
anonygler··on [dead]
Walking down market, I saw a grandma and her ~4 year old grandchild, and a few feet away a naked homeless dude yelling at a phantom. Making sf an even bigger open air drug market is a bad idea.
anonygler··on Road to war: US struggled to convince allies, and Zelensky, of risk of invasion
I’m still stunned at how deeply we’ve compromised Russian intelligence. Not only in calling the invasion, but we’ve helped plan devastating Ukrainian counter offensives.
anonygler··on Cognitive decline linked to ultraprocessed food, study finds
More correlation != causation. Dumb people tend to be poor, and poor people tend to eat processed food.
anonygler··on [dead]
Good news, everyone! "Plague rat" is finally now a slur.
anonygler··on Ask HN: Developers who switched from native development to Flutter, how is it?
So it’s like react native, but less portable to your web stack?
anonygler··on Bacterial and fungal isolation from face masks under the Covid-19 pandemic
Indeed, COVID has devastated the Alzheimer’s Community.

The COVID response however has devastated the young, robbing children of socialization. Not to mention how it’s impacted young adults with inflation and lack of in person networking. The collateral damage is immense and will take many years to shake out still.

The avg age of death from COVID is higher than your life expectancy. The biggest factor in having “long COVID” is a prior history of anxiety disorders.

anonygler··on Ask HN: How are you planning to adapt to climate change?
Solar Panels seem like an easy win to me. It protects me from PG&E rate hikes, PSPS outages, etc.
anonygler··on Meta bans staff from open discussion of Roe vs. Wade
Excellent. Allowing politics and activism at work has made workplaces unbearably stupid. Come to work and leave your baggage at home.
anonygler··on Covid vaccine injury plaintiffs face long odds in U.S. compensation program
If you call attention to this, you’ll be deplatformed and have your existence scrubbed. Internet activists who think you’re from the opposition party will target your employer and make you unemployable.

Inject yourself with this novel pharmaceutical if you want to feed your family. Absolutely insane. All for a virus that… what? Devastated the Alzheimer’s community? With an avg age of death above your life expectancy?

anonygler··on [dead]
It's worth noting that this likely assumes the batteries are newly manufactured. Lithium batteries can be recycled and reused many times.
anonygler··on Alzheimer’s amyloid hypothesis ‘cabal’ thwarted progress toward a cure (2019)
One might wonder if a similar thing had been happening with low carb / keto diet research. Being adopted as a fad diet has overwhelmed the constant scorn from the nutrition community.
anonygler··on Cramer: Tech CEOs tell me they’re sick of spoiled Silicon Valley employees
Absolute raving nonsense from this guy, as usual. Supply and demand clearly favor the employees, and most tech ceos are barely maintaining the market share they have. Nobody is moving a company. They might open an hq for subsidies.

Difference between dot com and now is every company is a tech company. Someone is always there to vacuum up the layoffs. So many companies need engineers and can’t afford them. Like the real estate, cut the price 5% and someone will snap it up.

But income is actually still going up right now.

anonygler··on S.F. population fell 6.3%, most in nation, to lowest level since 2010
The idea that people who simply decide to live somewhere are guilty of some moral failing is preposterous. Hold your elected leaders accountable for not doing their job.
anonygler··on Has Mainframe Computing Inadvertently Started Its Own Culture War?
Mainframes are locked into an antiquated IBM business model: charging by the CPU usage. This incentivizes writing code in Assembly, and prevented me from writing code in Java. They sell a “Java co processor” which is just an unmetered CPU for running JVM.

It’s an insular world in large part because of the pricing model that IBM/SAS doesn’t want to give up. No amount of claimed benefits can make adopting the mainframe a sane decision.

anonygler··on Musk announces funding secured for Twitter buy
You can absolutely take out low interest loans using your stock as collateral. That's how the wealthy pay for many things.
anonygler··on Twitter takeover battle: Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey turn up pressure on board
She did fuck all at google cloud. Far as I can tell she has the credibility of a TED Talk speaker. Why is she trotted out all over the valley? She definitely seems to be more of a socialite than anything else.
anonygler··on Twitter takeover battle: Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey turn up pressure on board
Just realized Fei Fei Li is on the twitter board. What in the world could this person contribute? Is she some 0.1% socialite? How useless.
anonygler··on War in Ukraine: Marshall Mud is winning again
Who cares? Not everyone needs to be in 100% agreement with you on all things at all times. Stop trying to police everyone else’s opinions.

And $1m isn’t even that much money. Why should he be in a hurry to give away his savings?

anonygler··on History's deadliest air raid happened in Tokyo during World War II (2020)
These bombings were almost as tragic as Japan's treatment of China and Korea. Luckily they hastened an end to the war and Japan's exit from the rest of the Asian continent, and spared many GI's from needing to invade the main Japanese island.
anonygler··on mRNA vaccine-induced antibodies more effective than natural immunity vs. Covid
Ah yes, the old semantics game :).
