anomie31··on Show HN: Stadia Maps, reasonably priced map tiles, static maps, and routing
I'm assuming OpenStreetMap provides the vector data. OpenStreetMap doesn't charge to use their service commercially iirc, so what do you provide that OSM doesn't?
anomie31··on Reverse engineering the Notability file format
Nice write-up.
anomie31··on It's time to head back to RSS?
Hey Wired, maybe RSS would be more popular if media outlets like you would put more in your RSS feeds than a title and single sentence for each article.

But I get it. You need ads to make money, and just putting ads in your RSS feed is not enough because they're not "interactive" enough, or something. You need those "engagement" metrics that you generate by making readers press a button to read the full article.

I was trying and fell short of something witty to say. Just, wow, this is a sorry state of affairs. Just give me the damn content and I'll be on my merry way.

anomie31··on Google Adds 'Kodi' to Autocomplete Piracy Filter
Kodi pirates did not destroy their reputation. Every semi-open platform has pirate users. Those that created piracy boxes and put the kodi logo right next to pirate services and legit services that addons enabled the piracy of probably contributed though. But most, if not all these boxes run kodi on top of Android, and their reputation hasn't been sullied from this.

I think Kodi could partially mitigate this issue by selling clean kodi boxes. I still don't know where I can buy one.

anomie31··on Vero – An ad-free social network
I looked into it more and it looks kinda slick, but is there anything really describing how it works? Everything I read on their website seems kinda hand wavey to me.
anomie31··on Vero – An ad-free social network
Pretend I'm one of your friends. Why would I use a social networks like akasha which will cost me money, when there's multiple open source social networking platforms with reliable hosts? Things will get even more interesting as they adopt activitypub, a json-ld based W3C standard for social networking, in order to interoperate. Mastodon and peertube are already there, but I don't expect that anyone would pay to relay activitypub messages through Akasha for anyone but themselves.

When will they release their recaptcha datasets, and their voice datasets? I'm really happy to see this, but I feel like we're being tossed crumbs here.
anomie31··on Amazon's policies promote counterfeiting
It's just one of many options, but do you put your heart and soul into something then not let it see the light of day after you find out you can't profit?

Speaking of which, do you think you could support more ontologies than schema.org? It's easy to use schema.org without understanding the rest of the RDF ecosystem, so I'll elaborate in a minute, but I'm on my phone right now so it's difficult.
anomie31··on Twitter Is Great. An Asshole Filter Would Make It Even Better
Like somethingawful.com?
anomie31··on Why the Web 3.0 matters and you should know about it
I was just about to mention that.

At least it still lives on in the metadata used for Google smart snippets, and it's used a lot in the life sciences, and on wikidata. I really wish it went further, but at least it's still useful for most intents and proposes despite the small ecosystem.

anomie31··on With ePrivacy looming, German publishers scramble to get users logged in
That's a good idea, but if I were a German citizen I'd rather they use something that's tried and true like shibboleth. I can't speak for the rest of the world, but shibboleth is what most of America's colleges and universities use to allow students to access research material the institution has paid for. Something that isn't obvious though, is anyone can setup a shibboleth identity provider, the only difference being that it's not on the whitelists that academic identity providers are on.
anomie31··on Beyond Biohazard: Why Danger Symbols Can’t Last Forever
Actually, the hyperbolic literally has been used for centuries. It's just a more common convention now.

Excuse my pedantry.

anomie31··on Reducing Chrome crashes caused by third-party software
It's referring to software that enables typing in non-latin languages. Most OS's ship everything needed as far as localization is concerned these days, but many users prefer third party software that is optimized specifically for their language, so it makes sense for them to be concerned by this announcement.
