annamargot··on Vitamin D and Depression (2020)
Latitude matters though. The farther north you are the more time in the sun you’d need. In some far north places, the sun you do get is not strong enough to get any Vit D.

annamargot··on What the Irish Ate Before Potatoes
Your fun fact is hilarious from an American perspective. It’s the biggest day for bars and pubs in the US and it’s not close.

It’s funny how Irish culture in America seems so different from its motherland counterpart. Same or more so for Italian. No judgements either way. Just interesting how diaspora cultures evolve

annamargot··on The art of not taking things personally
Self-awareness is how I look at it. And it is finally taking hold with age :)

I can better manage my emotions by simply being able to recognize them almost from an outsider’s perspective. My inner monologue switches to 3rd person

“Yeah you’re feeling super irritable right now, you better go chill out somewhere before you say something you don’t mean and then create a whole big thing for no reason”

Younger me would have started some shit and created unnecessary problems

annamargot··on Apple says photos in iCloud will be checked by child abuse detection system
Or photos of your own children.

We have a Tumblr set up for family to view pics of the kids. Several photos and videos of our kids when they were under 2 were taken down either temporarily or permanently by their CP algo.

These were a pic or video of kids in the bath or without a shirt. In none of them could you see bum or bits. Just a semi naked baby.

Algorithms like this get things wrong all the time

annamargot··on Square to acquire Afterpay for $29B
Potentially? Seems to me that potential is already being realized.
annamargot··on If you’re going to put your preschooler in front of a screen, choose a TV
But please don’t subject your children to commercials.

They don’t need temptation to eat/get garbage thrust upon them by high production value propaganda from giant corporations

annamargot··on Miami orders evacuation of 156-unit as structurally and electrically unsafe
My bet is that it would decrease the amount done.

If it’s free why not sign up, maybe someday I’ll use it. Maybe not

Edit: decrease the amount done as a percentage of signups. Perhaps the growth in signups would make up for the percentage drop in aggregate terms. Ie flood the gym with memberships and only find one more person actually working out

annamargot··on Ask HN: How do you privately share pictures and video with family and friends?
We use Tumblr in a custom domain + custom theme and I’m really pleased with the setup.

My wife and I can easily post from the tumblr app on our phones. Password protected site so only family can see it. Easy backups to Wordpress just in case.

It’s easy for family to check the site whenever they want rather than putting it on social media. We turned off commenting so there’s never pressure for anyone to leave a comment and we don’t have any sense of needing affirmation for every picture we put up. It’s all just there if family wants to see it. Grandparents living far away especially appreciate it.

For our own usage, it has been invaluable too. I made some theme updates so we can go back in time and look at specific months easily. It’s been a great asset of curated family photos we can go through to see the kids at different stages. They’re 7 & 4 now.

I’d be happy to share my custom Tumblr theme with anyone who’s interested.

For me, Peterson has a message/messenger dissonance. I like a lot of his thoughts on self improvement and psychology, but find his delivery and tone off putting at times. He can come off patronizing and condescending and in interviews often seems a little too emotional when challenged or asked about arguments critical to his.

I prefer reading articles like this where I can get the message without the messenger.

annamargot··on Why are some bilingual people dyslexic in English but not their other language?
Feel obliged to mention the Dyslexia Debate. Scientists who believe it’s a meaningless and imprecise term.

annamargot··on Coronavirus doctor's diary: Why are people remaining ill for so long?
On top of that, downplaying the severity of covid is critical to the arguments of those who want this to be over for political, economic, or any reasons.

The focus by many has been deaths. Mortality rate can be spun to make covid seem not so bad.

If we start talking about the percentage of people whose lives are significantly affected, we create a much bigger percentage. If you’re trying to paint the opposite picture, it’s not in your interest to acknowledge or increase awareness of that percentage.

annamargot··on Dogs' Eyes Have Changed Since Humans Befriended Them (2019)
Humans have had a very large hand in this evolution.

Dogs are probably the most heavily bred animal in the last 300-400 years. Many (most?) breeds of dogs only exist because humans specifically bred for certain traits.

When breeding for behavioral traits, a dog with expressive eyes who can make humans feel a connection has gotta be a winner over ol wolf eyes over there.

annamargot··on The Rise, Fall, and Rise of the Home Office
I‘ve gone through many chairs. They all create issues if you are sitting long hours.

My new thing is to move the ottoman from the living room into my office. I switch between sitting cross-legged and legs forward like a normal chair. I’m digging the change up fwiw

annamargot··on Britain has gone two months without burning coal to generate power
How much volume are we talking here and how frequently would it need to be disposed of?

I recall reading somewhere that it’s a very manageable amount.

annamargot··on Coronavirus: Care home deaths 'far higher' than official figures
My kids’ Boomer grandparents wouldn’t want the burden of assisting with rearing their grandchildren. We can barely get them to watch our kids for an afternoon. Seems a common theme with our friends who are parents.

Their parents’ generation would/would have though. My grandparents did a lot with me and my siblings when we were young in the 80s and 90s

annamargot··on 50% – 75% of cases of Covid-19 are asymptomatic
It would sure be nice to know whether you’ve had it though.

If I thought I’d already recovered from a mild COVID-19 - assuming I’d then have immunity for a decent chunk of time - I might think I could now move from the sidelines and into the fight and help others.

But if I was wrong and I never did actually have it, then I’d be making things worse.

Widespread testing could obv illuminate much.

annamargot··on To get good, go after the metagame
Thank you for taking the time to write this.
annamargot··on What Nihilism Is Not
I think there’s a difference between illustrating an idea and proving a point.

When illustrating an idea, It might be sensible to use relatable examples that make the concept easier to grasp. I don’t see that an attempt to prove a point or persuade in and of itself.

I do however believe that if you disagree with the greater piece, it could be easy to pick on this kind of example to create the appearance of childishness / lack of seriousness. An easy win but not necessarily with merit.

annamargot··on “Why We Sleep” Is Riddled with Scientific and Factual Errors
Probably not. However, pointing out what many may consider a minor falsehood could set yourself for an easy counter.

If Walker wanted to discredit your essay. He could give a sound bite like:

“Ok, yes, yeast. You’re right, but that’s not something most people consider relevant to sleeping rhythms. Haha. The essay is nitpicking minor technicalities but on a whole my research is unblemished.”

If I were his PR rep, I’d advise as such. You’re essay is too good to be vulnerable like that.

annamargot··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Awesome job. This type of service is critical for e-commerce businesses like mine.

Just curious, I see you accept payment in crypto. What percentage of customers pay with crypto, and how has that changed since 2012?

annamargot··on Why did a humpback whale save a seal's life? (2016)
So the answer is simply:

Why not?

annamargot··on Firefighting foam leaves toxic legacy in Californians’ drinking water
I don’t see why anyone anywhere would risk drinking tap water when filtration systems are relatively cheap.

Get an RO system and a water bottle.

annamargot··on Writing Is Thinking: Learning to Write with Confidence
I’d love to hear more about this approach. Could you expand on the process in your second paragraph?

Also would love to hear how that process informs the experiences mentioned in your third paragraph.

annamargot··on Denmark's Jyske Bank lowers its negative rates on deposits
In a world with crypto currencies, would a frugal Dane be wise to put their cash into a cryptocurrency?

I realize crypto is still seen as risky, however if it takes hold and overall market volatility stabilizes, how would easy access to borderless liquid digital assets affect the neg interest rate strategy?

Edit: remove mention of specific cryptocurrency in an attempt to shift focus to broader strategy.

annamargot··on Indoor carbon dioxide levels could be a health hazard
Is the AC not also helping to circulate the air, removing some of the CO2?
annamargot··on Sleep trackers can make insomnia worse
Just read “Why We Sleep”. Never had a problem getting to sleep until I started reading that book.

I started stressing hard if I didn’t get to sleep right away. Put it down for a few days and all is well again.

Excellent book, freaked me the f out.

annamargot··on Training the Brain to Eat Less Sugar
Define natural please. It’s my belief that industrialized food production has created unnatural availability of foods that largely use unnatural ingredients. Unnatural as in not found readily or at all in nature.

Are you defining natural as ‘conventional 21st century Western diet’? ie what everyone is doing around you.

annamargot··on Why Are We Still So Fat?
Counter-acting the factors that made a person fat in the first place seems very difficult. Especially when compounded by an always-aging body.

Off the top of my head:

  - genetic pre-dispositions
  - Eating habits during childhood
  - Eating habits during early adulthood
  - the effects on metabolism and body chemistry of the above
  - Many more, I'm sure
