anhner··on Show HN: Using GPT-3 and Whisper to save doctors’ time
It's definetly not just you... Tho that may still be a plus considering the shortage of doctors in a lot of countries. But the privacy concerns still remain.
anhner··on How Duolingo reignited user growth
> What in the great googly moogly? It takes months of work to add a progress bar?

Haha yeah, that stood out to me as well. Did they only have one dev working part time?

anhner··on A Call to Legislate 'Backdoors' into Stable Diffusion
That's hardly the same, it's a very specific use case, and not all photo editors include the feature.
anhner··on A Call to Legislate 'Backdoors' into Stable Diffusion
This reads like something out of a dystopian nightmare. And something that is very very easily circumvented, i.e. generate a image similar to what you want to achieve, then photoshop the faces of the people into the generated image. Or do the authors propose that photo editing software also include backdoors to prevent this?
anhner··on ChatGPT Plus
At least you understood my comment.
anhner··on ChatGPT Plus
I think you have misread my comment. A regular toothbrush + toothpaste costs pennies a day, add floss and mouthwash and it would still not reach $20/month. If I can take care of my teeth by using all of those costing so little, what on Earth would I gain by paying more?
anhner··on ChatGPT Plus
But I don't need a mechanical keyboard when a standard cheap one works just as fine. What would I possibly gain from paying more?
anhner··on Python's “disappointing” superpowers
Any source for those made-up-sounding numbers?
anhner··on ChatGPT Plus
No, just the phone. I use the call/text/data plant so little since I'm mostly on wifi anyway, so I left that out.
anhner··on ChatGPT Plus
I agree, it's stupid to pay $20 for something you can get for 2 cents
anhner··on ChatGPT Plus
People are also delusional
anhner··on ChatGPT Plus
I use my toothbrush every day but I wouldn't pay $20 per month for it.

I use my keyboard everyday but I wouldn't pay $20 per month for it. In fact, I paid around $4 total for it, as paying more would bring significantly more diminishing returns.

I use my phone every day and have used it for the past 5 years with no issue, it has brought me so much value and yet, if I draw the line, it didn't even reach $20 per month (price divided by time used), not even mentioning that I expect it to last another 2-3 years, bringing the cost down even further.

What kind of crazy value would you expect something to have in order to be worth $20/mo?

anhner··on New AI classifier for indicating AI-written text
1. Create AI capable of writing almost human-level text and make it generally available.

2. Make said AI generate text in a way that makes it possible to detect that it was written by a machine.

3. Create another AI that detects text written by above AI

<--- You are here

4. Put your detector service behind a paywall

5. Every time a competitor appears for your generator, change its steganography so that only your detector correctly classifies it

6. Profit

anhner··on Builder's Remedy goes into effect in many California cities tomorrow
I guarantee you children in (european) urban areas go out more because there are more children and places to play with.

In suburban hell what are you supposed to play with? And with whom? The only other two kids on the street?

anhner··on Ask HN: Did improving conversation and listening skills win you anything big?
You say it's like a science, do you have any resources that have helped you in that direction, or do you mean in the sense that you experimented and saw what worked?
anhner··on How we’re approaching AI-generated writing on Medium
so you say it's full of crap, and the solution is for them to allow even more, even crappier crap?
anhner··on Nuclear explosion impact on humans indoors (2022)
That makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to clear up a stranger's confused mind! :)
anhner··on Nuclear explosion impact on humans indoors (2022)
Thanks, now I understand how they reached the number but not why it's so convoluted. I only took one stats course in college.

So it's

P(bomb exploding in a century) = 1 - P(bomb not exploding in a century) = 1 - (P(bomb not exploding in a year)) ^ 100 = 1 - (1 - P(bomb exploding in a year)) ^ 100

Why is it not something simpler, like P(bomb exploding in a year) ^ 100 ?

anhner··on Ask HN: Where are all the parties?
> I have 4-5 close friends I can hang out with every other week or so

Is that so abnormal? I have the same experience after graduating a few years ago but always thought that was what happens to most people.

Other than the friends you made in college, you can always find new people through hobbies or work.

anhner··on Nuclear explosion impact on humans indoors (2022)
> a 1% chance per year, that implies a 63% probability per century.

I'm not sure I'm following the math here?

have you tried right click > open in container > choose container?

or right click on the tab > reopen in container > choose container

anhner··on Meet “Claude”: Anthropic’s rival to ChatGPT
Does it need all that much space though? I mean Stable Diffusion was trained on hundreds of terrabytes of images, and the model only needs 4-5 GB of hardware space and a decent GPU to run.

I haven't read anywhere any stats about GPT3/ChatGPT yet (like how big the model is)

anhner··on Meet “Claude”: Anthropic’s rival to ChatGPT
Is it bigger than the Stable Diffusion model? (4-5 GB)
anhner··on Meet “Claude”: Anthropic’s rival to ChatGPT
I'm hoping of one day running GPT3/ChatGPT on my local computer, similarly to how one can run Stable Diffusion now.

I would love to have a personal conversation with these AI systems, use them as a sort of assistant, without the worry of being spied on. At the moment I can't use it as more than a glorified search engine, because of the privacy implications of running it on the cloud.

anhner··on Revisiting KDE
There's a difference between simplifying and putting extra options under a setting, and removing things altogether.
anhner··on Microfeatures I'd like to see in more languages
"If you can't correctly implement a for loop using assembly, then the language can't save you, nothing can"
anhner··on Microfeatures I'd like to see in more languages
Right, cause why let the language do it automatically when you can use a bug prone manual implementation?
anhner··on Life Is Short (2016)
On the contrary, I think comments that push religion as some kind of romantic enlightenment of the past as opposed to science are the ones that don't belong on this site.
anhner··on Life Is Short (2016)
Ah yes, the hard earned social lesson of not wearing mixed fibers. Or not allowing women on their period to share the bed of their husband.
