angrydev··on AOC Quit Facebook. The Media Bungled the Story
This article only references one news article published by the Washington Post[1]. It's not even completely clear to me after reading it that the writer was trying to do what the author of this post was saying.

To say the entire media has bungled the story is disingenuous. Go look at other articles that don't mention CA or any other political scandal[2]. This is a real non-story.

angrydev··on Facebook collects a wide range of private data from developers
This headline has been modified from the original, and is a mischaracterization of what's happening here. Facebook isn't collecting this data, rather the authors of many popular apps are sending these statistics to Facebook's analytics tool to better target with ads. The article explains Facebook doesn't want these companies sending users' personal data to them without their knowledge.

They are not completely absolved of blame because they should be monitoring for personal data (somehow), but the app developers should be to blame more using this data without users' knowledge.

Now if Facebook were to use this data for their own purposes, we'd have (another) real scandal on our hands.

angrydev··on Gmail Icons are Hard
All of these icons have tooltips that appear within 100ms of hovering over them. Surely there is a better part of the new gmail UI to pick apart?
angrydev··on Facebook turned on face recognition silently
I got this notification in my news feed last night and now I can't find the option to shut it off on desktop or mobile. No idea what is going on.

Comcast is having major issues right now

angrydev··on Ask HN: Is Comcast having internet problems?
Comcast user in SE Michigan here, can't reach certain websites (reddit, cnn, basecamp)
angrydev··on F.lux v4
Tried to switch from Flux to Windows 10 nightlight, was awful. If you wake your computer from sleep after sunset, nightlight doesn’t activate automatically. Been a known issue since they released it.
angrydev··on Parents Who Pay to Be Watched
I thought that little quote was the most important part of the article, it's really a shame it's buried at the bottom. Especially with all the activities outlined in this kid's life. Is it any wonder he started acting out?

angrydev··on Ancient Iraqi Artifacts Imported By Hobby Lobby to be Forfeited
This isn't the same thing as buying a stolen lamp from a yard sale. In fact that's pretty ignorant to ignore the details with this case.

FTA: Notwithstanding these warnings, in December 2010, Hobby Lobby executed an agreement to purchase over 5,500 Artifacts, comprised of cuneiform tablets and bricks, clay bullae and cylinder seals, for $1.6 million. The acquisition of the Artifacts was fraught with red flags. For example, Hobby Lobby received conflicting information where the Artifacts had been stored prior to the inspection in the UAE. Further, when the Artifacts were presented for inspection to Hobby Lobby’s president and consultant in July 2010, they were displayed informally. In addition, Hobby Lobby representatives had not met or communicated with the dealer who purportedly owned the Artifacts, nor did they pay him for the Artifacts. Rather, following instructions from another dealer, Hobby Lobby wired payment for the Artifacts to seven personal bank accounts held in the names of other individuals.

angrydev··on Ask HN: What are interviews like in non-software engineering professions?
I've often wondered if non-SWP interviews involve homework... I hate this aspect of interviewing for positions.

angrydev··on Jeff Varasano's Famous New York Pizza Recipe (2008)
Yeah same story here. Am from Long Island and grew up with amazing pizza on every corner. Moved to Michigan and after a few years of disappointment I started a pizza diary (http://tightpizza.com) where I break down why I am dissatisfied with the state of pizza out here.

Recently I started making my own with a recipe similar to what was posted here (but mostly from Ken Forkish's book The Elements of Pizza), and I'm pretty happy with the results so far. It's at least something to hold me over until trips home.

angrydev··on CIA espionage orders for the 2012 French presidential election
Seems like the CIA was tasked with gathering intel on presidential candidates of a major European nation.

What exactly is a revelation here?

angrydev··on Video Games Are Boring
I don't think you're weak at all. They do build the games to be super stimulating and addicting. They build reward models into the games that help you form the habit of playing every day for a small reward. Then eventually you're logging in every day to play for something you don't care at all about.

Once you realize that, you're free.

angrydev··on Someone Is Learning How to Take Down the Internet
Can anyone elaborate on what he means when he says that Verisign can 'go down' and take down most of the internet with it? How would a registrar going down affect anything to do with actual hosts?
angrydev··on Google is bringing new ad types to AMP
Half the AMP articles I try to read don't let me scroll on iOS 8 Safari. I like using Google News but AMP has seriously hurt my experience. I would much rather just use Safari's built in Reader View, but of course this removes the ads they want me to see.
angrydev··on Why I Quit My Job to Travel the World
I don't understand how you're glossing over the fact that your buddy was homeless for 1+ years or however long it was.

Even if you don't have a family, people don't want to sleep outside.

angrydev··on Steve Jobs's response after getting a Google employee fired.
Regardless of the overarching policy, this brief exchange is being brought down to tabloid level discussion by pando, it's really nothing that terrible.

angrydev··on NSA Spying Documents to be Released As Result of EFF Lawsuit
The laws and regulations revealed in this document will be important for targeted action on issues. Whether it was obvious to you that the government was harvesting data on its people for years, we cannot fight what we have no evidence about. With this release, we can actually pick out the laws that we have an issue with, and target them for debate.

> our government should be doing what it can to boost our economy in a long-term fashion while ensuring our freedom and safety. If that involves an overreaching security group, so be it.

If you trust the government with that much power I suppose this whole issue over surveillance seems quaint to you. Most people however would like to have some input over the powers wielded by their government. Something about a 'for the people, by the people' type thing.

angrydev··on After Multiple Denials, CIA Admits to Snooping on Noam Chomsky
I highly recommend the readability plugin (http://www.readability.com/addons) for dealing with these terrible overlays.
angrydev··on The Fall jams your gun on jailbroken iOS devices
More anti-consumer crap from SquareEnix. It's really a shame they are hellbent on running their fantastic franchises into the ground.
