anewhnaccount2··on AMD to buy Silo AI for $665M
They successfully trained LLMs on Lumi, which has AMD Instinct MI250X GPUs. This perhaps provides a hint about one angle on why AMD are interested.
anewhnaccount2··on I am using AI to drop hats outside my window onto New Yorkers
Then a seagull flies overhead ;)
anewhnaccount2··on Meritocracy at Scale
If you make a poll with two options, you can force people into two camps, and declare on the "winner". I would bet that most of us have slightly more nuanced positions, where we may be influenced by arguments made by either the "Tankies" or the "evil earth destroying capitalists" depending on context.
anewhnaccount2··on Bibliography keys: It's as easy as [1], [2], [3]
What about being able to use direct voice when reporting related work? e.g. "Secondname invented a yabayaba". I have seen "[1] invented a yabayaba", but doesn't it look kind of odd?

anewhnaccount2··on New exponent functions that make SiLU and SoftMax 2x faster, at full accuracy
Yes but as far as I understand this is only really usefully possible with FlashAttention. (The main idea is that you have to use the log-sum-exp trick when computing the softmax, but can't compute the max activation incrementally so have to rescale everything.)
anewhnaccount2··on Haystack DB – 10x faster than FAISS with binary embeddings by default
The performance numbers do not show time performance versus accuracy perforamnce. Binary embeddings clearly have a time advantage, at the expense of accuracy. Reporting/benchmarking in this domain requires (at least) two dimensions.
anewhnaccount2··on My mother declared my bedroom a disaster area (1984)
Okay, I'll bite, although I'm afraid it's unlikely this will lead to much substantive discussion.

* "Trickle Down Economics": Large tax cuts for the wealthy while simultaneously dismantling social programs which benefit everyone else

* Arming authoritarian and far right militia in South America

* Environmental deregulation

* Giving a voice to the religious right and their anti-gay/anti-woman agenda

anewhnaccount2··on Are you fitting the Gaussian curve or is it fitting you?
Yeah, I can't manage all of those. Can I not make up some in supporting/loving affection?
anewhnaccount2··on How to found a company in Germany: 14 "easy" steps and lots of pain
I thought those delays were meant to encourage you to declare everything in advance on your tax card.
anewhnaccount2··on How to found a company in Germany: 14 "easy" steps and lots of pain
The degradation comes from waves of austerity politics by right wing governments. These services are expensive and require staff to keep things going. Austerity ideology dictates that there simply must be inefficiency in public services, and cuts are the cure to this disease since this will cause the public sector to "make do and mend" and end up running more efficiently, rather than having a knock on effect and decrease the quality of the services. This is the policy direction responsible for the fall in the quality of public services in the UK, and for some reason Finland decided this was an excellent idea and is following suit. The SDP patched things up a little bit, but not as fast as things can be torn down.
anewhnaccount2··on How to graduate your PhD when you have no hope
You don't know that this person has lots of work to do on themselves. These things are partially a matter of compatibility, putting yourself out there (which is a thing you do rather than a thing you become), and yes, unfortunately, pure dumb luck.
anewhnaccount2··on Random Walk Simulation
You might be thinking of the bounded case? I think maybe a 1d random walk bounded on one side will tend to stay near to the origin.

anewhnaccount2··on Reactive Programming Without Functions
There's also https://github.com/mech-lang/mech which is a sort of descendant of Eve https://witheve.com/ . That too seems to be getting close to hiatus. It's a bit of a shame since it seems like quite a nice paradigm for some stuff like GUIs, interactive stuff, and discrete event simulation, but I suppose the paradigm is both a bit obscure and different enough from everything else that it becomes a "boil the ocean" situation where one or a few people try and hack away but aren't really able to get much traction and eventually tired themselves out.

anewhnaccount2··on The Hawai’i Seaglider Initiative: A new approach to travel between the islands

anewhnaccount2··on Fast Fashion Casino
It's an interesting point. Where do my responsibilities end as a consumer? I suppose "inadvertently participating" is qualified by the degree to which you believe it is likely that buying a more expensive product also causes negative externalities. (I am assuming I am meant to use price as an indicator.) If I believe that this is also highly likely, by paying more, I am simply giving more money to the exploiter. Is it not worse to reward them more for their actions?
anewhnaccount2··on Fast Fashion Casino
While this is almost definitely the case, in general supply chains are completely opaque to the consumer. Anything you buy could and probably has involved exploitative labor practices in some place. As for pollution, everything uses energy. Even using if something uses green energy in its production, it will cause someone else who otherwise would have used that green energy to use some polluting energy instead. There is no standardized labeling scheme and nobody can be trusted. I mean if the person selling stuff is telling me it's "ethical" -- okay so I'm just meant to take that a face value am I? Where's the proof? What's penalty if it turns out you've lied? What are the chances someone will even be able to investigate the whole supply chain after the fact and then they'll actually do it?

Late but there are many. This is called diamond access. A possibly familiar example is the ACL.
anewhnaccount2··on Is RISC-V ready for HPC? Evaluating the 64-core Sophon SG2042 RISC-V CPU
The other thing to look at is the affiliations. All these people work for https://www.epcc.ed.ac.uk/ i.e. they are working for a HPC facility attached to a university.
anewhnaccount2··on An Open Letter to the Python Software Foundation
So PSF is not a global organisation. Africa need not apply is a pretty bad look.
anewhnaccount2··on An Open Letter to the Python Software Foundation
Stonewalling, delaying and simply not responding can be so much worse when they play out in real situations than people might imagine. You can waste a lot of the other person's time this way. We might hear a lot of justifications like "whoops" or "volunteers!" but the supposed deniability of such tactics is part of what makes them so exasperating and emotionally draining to deal with. I will withhold a final judgement until hearing the other side but it really looks like the PSF has a lot to answer for here.
anewhnaccount2··on Now I can just print that video
Exactly. Fiddling with your phone over and over again while your hands are wet/covered in flour etc. A paper sheet you can pin to the fridge or just get dirty is a reasonable solution imo.
anewhnaccount2··on Now I can just print that video
This is a task called "video summarization". See https://paperswithcode.com/task/video-summarization . I guess the whole project is something like summarizing from video + subtitles + text to pictures + text.
