Taiwan the land, not so much
Move the population to the US, grant them citizenship, let China take the land, which the US cannot defend anyway
This would also be a boon to airlines and cruise companies, providing a full year of nonstop work
How much house can a dollar buy versus twenty years ago? If the dollar was indeed rising in value over time, a dollar would buy more house today than in 2000. Before we left the gold standard, a dollar indeed held its purchasing power over decades. The price of gold is effectively an inverse measure of the value of a dollar given that the amount of gold is basically fixed.
Devalued currencies tend not to be consistent with historical stability - they tend to arrive around the same time a society "resets".
edit: the only way you could be losing your life savings on GME is with a dumb, arrogant short position. yes, you should starve...isn't this what a short sale is anyway? A bet that someone else will starve?
How? For at least the last decade, your typical developer in the Bay Area has been a renter...long since priced-out of a single-family home. Even FAANG developers are priced out of the better suburbs.
So in every one of these threads, HN is all of a sudden nostalgic for two hours a day commuting, shelling out-of-pocket for parking, eating junk food for lunch every day...
Offices cost money. This is why WFH isn't going away. Even people who are required to go into the office periodically might find themselves sharing temp space with others who use the same (reduced) space on alternating days.
As you can tell from this comment, I love WFH and will never go back....and it doesn't look like I'll have to. While the poor office dwellers are sitting in their cars, I'm enjoying a nice morning run.
There is little deception. Funds that take crazy risks will say so in their prospectus. There's no chance your S&P500 index fund is taking a huge Bed Bath And Beyond short position when no one is watching.
Once again, even HFT, chat mobs, etc won't take down a sound position...at best they can only create temporary disruptions. If someone wants to try their hand at trading those disruptions, go nuts.
If your position is easily undermined by anonymous posters on reddit...
In any case, it will only delay the inevitable. If NASDAQ halts trading on an equity, they just prolong the agony of a bad short position. How would Citron have been helped by a delay? Its a loan, the longer its open, the more you pay! So a trading halt is actually counterproductive for short hedge funds, what they really need is the quickest exit possible

"Melvin Capital closed out its short position in GameStop on Tuesday afternoon after taking a huge loss, the hedge fund’s manager told CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin."
Amazon. Enjoy your monoculture.
I can't believe these "professional" funds would keep short positions open on an equity with crazy-high short interest...that's like Trading-For-Dummies grade fail.
What's more amazing is many of their clients will be destroyed in the largest bubble in history, where money was given out to every idiot with a TD Ameritrade account.
But, chances are, a lot of them will make incredible gains by betting on the misery of hedge funds who themselves bet on misery. No tears shed for the hedge funds or the account holders who are now basically zero'd out. Imagine having your life savings in one of these funds...in the biggest bubble in history, your account went to ZERO!
Look at Melvin - they are trying to convince the market they are still solvent.
Citron closed their shorts at a huge loss.
This really is a case of "seasoned professionals" getting slaughtered on awful trades, and they didn't appear to have a safety net set up.
edit: people seem to think I am cheerleading WSB...far from it, someone there will also get slaughtered by being the last fool to walk in on a risky trade. Trading is merciless, caveat emptor!
edit2: the article above does NOT refute my claims. Melvin took a $2 billion emergency infusion from Citadel. You don't do that if you safely closed your trades without hazard. Sorry I'm going to trust Bloomberg over "nope-its-lily"
Stimulus checks, extended UI, rent and mortgage forbearance etc etc etc. And it won't stop because it can't.
the basic "innovation" is the ability to coerce the masses by threatening to destroy money if not spent in accordance with central planners....here's $5k, spend it by Friday or its gone
all the funds getting trashed are getting showed up as amateurs....by actual amateurs!
short trades are incredibly dangerous, you need a trade to go negative, but quickly before too many others also short. real, quality short opportunities are so rare that I just use a simple rule...never short.
YOU voted in single party rule in CA. Frankly I'm amazed at how little they have exercised their monopoly...they have the votes to pass stuff like this by the hour.
And if you knew how SF schools worked, you wouldn't have written your last sentence. You leave SF schools to escape diversity - its a lottery system.
