andybak··on Bez: Generating a browser engine from specs and tests
To be fair - my recollection was "representing browser vendors and pragmatists". It was far from rhe industry stitch-up that that might sound like to modern ears.
andybak··on Mathematical Origami
Yeah - the lack of hand holding is partly laziness and partly intentional. I personally love digging into deep visual toys and figuring out what various button presses do.

But I probably do need to make it a little less mysterious and fix some of the obvious ux gotchas.

The brief tutorial is also probably slightly out of date since I added some features.

At the danger of spamming this (well - posting it for the second time in 6 months) - I'm still trying to find the select demographic who appreciate this:

andybak··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
DeepSeek v4.1 Flash is fascinating and uneven. It's way too chatty in OpenCode to be a collaboration partner. I tried dsh-tui which feels comparable to the codex/claude tui's and it's usable. but it seems to be "brilliant and yet stupid" in a way I can't quite put my finger on. I've got too much real work to get done to dig into it so until the big boys price me out of the market I'm back to my $100/month deal.
andybak··on Meta VR Glasses
Nonsense. VR was and still is sustainable as a profitable niche product for specific use-cases. Zuck spending billions to try and own a new mass market category has nothing to do with that.
andybak··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
I'm fairly sure most open weight model providers are serving them at a sustainable price - and I've used them enough to know that I could live with them if the big boys did a rug pull.
andybak··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
If you told us which model that was or roughly when, then your comment would be more helpful.
andybak··on Microsoft director: AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
I wasn't implying that it was okay to "steal" things because they were offered voluntarily. My position on this is kind of complex and nuanced but this particular reply was meant to state the opposite.
andybak··on Microsoft director: AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
A huge chunk of the content that was scraped was most likely provided voluntarily rather than being waged labour.

andybak··on How to Use Three.js's New Native Gaussian Splats
No .sog support? I can't tell if .spz or .sog is likely to win out as a de facto standard - or whether both will co-exist but annoyingly I've gravitated towards .sog as it seemed technically superior and I'd be mildly inconvenienced if it became a niche format.
andybak··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
Ah, but there was a (maybe unintentional) implication that the people who loved it were oblivious to "soul" or something like.

(The core problem here is that aesthetic disagreements are often expressed in a way that makes them sound like moral failings. I do it myself far too often)

andybak··on Show HN: Art – draw one stroke, let symmetry complete it
Ha! I added a similar feature to Open Brush: https://docs.openbrush.app/user-guide/multimirror

And learned a bit about group theory in the process... :-/

andybak··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
I both love you and curse you for that mod.

I still haven't got around to playing Outer Wilds despite knowing enough to know I should. Because I keep thinking "I can only play it once - I should play it in VR" and then never getting around to it.

andybak··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
Ironically less so as they've added more to do but:

> NMS is an amazing game with no soul.

I found the game in the early days to be incredibly soulful - it was almost an interactive poem. Full of emptiness and loss. I loved it back then.

andybak··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
Same. I really want to play it but - I feel I need to skip the first hour to do so?
andybak··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
Different people find different things fun. I've never been grabbed by multiplayer FPS (I never git gud) - or souls-likes (same). I do sometimes get sucked into some Bethesda games but I need to get over the initial hump. I had a serious Minecraft problem (solo play - not groups) and had a big Beat Saber phase. I still play OG Doom but never liked Quake. I usually hate games with narratives except when I don't. Journey nearly made me weep with joy and sadness but I don't tend to go for slow, arty games in general... And - in general I want to like games, find them fascinating as a medium - but find most of them tedious when I sit down to play.
andybak··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
I find incremental (clicker) games fascinating because they are like crack for certain brains (myself included if I let them).

There's something interesting going on with certain kinds of activity - exponential progression and incessant busy-ness. It tickles something that shouldn't be tickled.

andybak··on Tell HN: OpenAI brings back 5 hour limit for plus and business standard users
Oh that's just sloppy of them.
andybak··on Tell HN: OpenAI brings back 5 hour limit for plus and business standard users
Where's the moat? You can only truly "capture market share" if there's lock-in and no competition.
andybak··on Tell HN: OpenAI brings back 5 hour limit for plus and business standard users
The "run locally" thing is a red herring. The fact that anyone can be an inference providers and offer them as a service is what we need to focus on. If they are "good enough" then market forces will stop Anthropic/OpenAI from charging monopoly rents.

I'm getting a Poe's Law feeling. I'm genuinely unsure about whether this post is a stone cold parody or not. I think I need to turn off the internet and go to bed.

EDIT: Your username doesn't help, either.

It can also be "mostly true but exaggerated for polemic effect".

Or your definition of political might be different to the speakers.

Or it could be intended to highlight a way of perceiving the world and thus not be subject to truth claims.

Etc. This list can be extended indefinitely.

Language is not a game of symbol manipulation.

andybak··on Omarchy development practices lead to predictable security issues
"Proofs" in this sense of the word are things that apply to mathematics and formal systems. Language is squishy. A minimal counterexample is potentially squishy enough to be meaningless.

> You might be too familiar with "activism" as a perjurative

Do people generally regard it as a perjurative? I always assumed it ranged from neutral to positive. I do wonder how off my calibration is sometimes.
