andrewstuart··on Bluesky's active user base is shrinking as its focus expands beyond the app
I’ve come to think there’s no “better” social media.

People just seem to leave social media entirely.

andrewstuart··on Mark Zuckerberg attacks 'closed' AI rivals as Meta returns to open models
>> promoting his vision of “personal superintelligence”

What personal vision did Zuckerberg ever get right?

andrewstuart··on OpenAI's new device will be hockey puck-sized and cost over $300
If Johny Ives delivers a hockey puck then he is diminished in my eyes.

Of all the things you could breath AI life into, what could be more boring, bland and already done than the Alexa hockey puck.

andrewstuart··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
It’s well known they grow at approximately half a gram a year.
andrewstuart··on Workers Drilling in Romania Broke into a Cave Sealed for 5.5M Years
Great first line for a story.
andrewstuart··on The AI Productivity Gap
AI non believer rolls out old tropes, concludes AI not really much of a thing, probably mass hallucinated.
andrewstuart··on NHS apologises and admits Palantir have access to identifiable patient data
Definitely fine.

All the Palantir employees have read that clause of course.

In Australia when the biggest health insurer had ALL patient records stolen, the Board of Directors immediately granted themselves very large cash bonuses (true).

andrewstuart··on Karpathy’s Pelican
This is equally bad as a pelican test.

LLMs should be tested in the same way people should be tested for a job interview (but often aren’t) - with tasks RELEVANT to usage.

So you don’t just randomly pick some random thing to make the LLM randomly do (like many job interviewers do).

You start with clear statements about real world usage scenarios. THEN you come up with tests that give insight to how well the LLM/hob seeker gets the job done.

Please, stop coming up with random tests like it’s Microsoft in 1990 and you’re asking job seekers how the would move Mount Fuji, as a way of assessing their programming skills.

No stupid irrelevant pelicans on bicycles and no stupid renderings of Lord Of The Rings. Unless those are relevant use cases.

Any test that anyone comes up with must clearly state the context and how the outcome is measured.

andrewstuart··on Linux desktop market share has hit over 10% in North America
I do not believe this. Unless it’s some sort of tricksy word game or counting android or something.

There is 0% chance that 10% of desktops/laptops are running desktop Linux.

andrewstuart··on A Surveillance Treaty in Disguise: Canada Signs UN Cybercrime Convention
Wrong. The government cares.
andrewstuart··on BMW Spider-Man in-car advertising
Everyone sells out for a price and old Spidey found how much BWM will drop its pants for.
andrewstuart··on Superlogical
Sounds a bit like the do all the things of Google Wave.
andrewstuart··on After the AI Crash
Railroads, electrification, fibre optic networks all lost money for early investors but the infrastructure became the basis for future economic and technological developments.
andrewstuart··on Show HN: Virtual time engine to record HTML to 60fps MP4, no drops
My understanding is there is many caveats to the idea of freezing browser time.

The browser is not designed to work this way and many things such as audio video and some CSS cannot effectively be paused and stepped though.

Is this right or wrong is my information out of date?

andrewstuart··on Show HN: I mapped every US golf course
Why free? Golfers have money.
andrewstuart··on Alien World Chemistry Found Inside Meteorite That Struck New Jersey Home
Scene one of a Steven Spielberg movie.
andrewstuart··on Uncle Bob: My current strategy is to not read any of the code by my agents
But what about TDD?

It’s a religion you know.

Even AI can’t stop the believers - you must write a test for every line of code before you write the code.

It may sound ridiculous crazy stupid and bananas to some but that the way TDD works.

andrewstuart··on Amiga 1000: Ten years ahead of its time
I thought “I think I have an Amiga 1200 in the garage in a box.”

Looked for it, found it and underneath was an Amiga 1000 I forgot I had.

andrewstuart··on Are AI labs pelicanmaxxing?
The pelican prompt is ridiculous.

Test the LLLM against things you want it to do.

Asking questions that are absurd is like interviewing developers and asking absurd questions on the grounds that it tests creative and critical thinking.

Remember these Microsoft interview questions designed to identify the best developers?

"If you could eliminate one U.S. state, which one would it be?"

"How would you move Mount Fuji?"

Absurd interview questions have an air of legitimacy due to the quasi sophisticated justifications put forward for why they are good tests.

Absurd interview questions are not good tests of people or LLMs.

Relevant questions are good tests.

andrewstuart··on So, I tried to build an Android app
Errrr. I did have some interest in building an Android app but this sounds …… challenging.
andrewstuart··on Five US tech giants' hidden debts soar to $1.65T on opaque AI funding
Pretty sure Tim Apple can flip open his wallet and pick up the tab for everyone, if he’s feeling generous.
andrewstuart··on I loved my AI assistant. My friends did not
>> kept track of events when I felt like someone was dishonest with me.

Humans are designed to forget this stuff.

andrewstuart··on Mirror your GitHub repos to tangled.org automatically
Tangled terrible name for source control.
andrewstuart··on Why do AI company logos look like buttholes?
If I start an ai company I guarantee I will get a butthole logo and it will be animated.
andrewstuart··on IBM is on pace for its worst day ever
You were correct. I concede and stand corrected.
andrewstuart··on IBM is on pace for its worst day ever
“Wait for the real bottom” is doing a lot of work.

Tell you what, come back here in 24 hours and let’s touch base and we will see if you or I was right.

IBM currently $217.76 down 24.97% my prediction it bounces back up within 24 hours.

andrewstuart··on IBM is on pace for its worst day ever
And then bounces back.

Go buy it right now, profit tomorrow.

andrewstuart··on Australian energy retailers must offer three hours of free daytime electricity
Impolite.
andrewstuart··on Australian energy retailers must offer three hours of free daytime electricity
Some parts of Australia.

Not Victoria which has bankrupted itself building roads and railways it cannot afford.

andrewstuart··on Against Usefulness
I feel like VCs are less relevant than ever.

It’s nice to see gatekeepers vanish to irrelevance.
