andrewstuart··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
Good thing the Netherlands isn’t the most critical single node for advanced chip equipment, cause that could become awkward.

Oh wait, it is.

But it’s ok because Us President has made it clear the the USA doesn’t need anything Europe has. So, not a problem.

andrewstuart··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
100% success!
andrewstuart··on You are no longer invited to dinner
I get caught in the comparison game, the thief of joy.

I don’t want ask my rich well off friends around cause of my humble existence.

andrewstuart··on What would a serious AI product look like?
Consumer level install process.

Imagine if you could install an LLM like you can install an application on MacOS - ie stag it to a folder and now it works.

Instead of installing vast numbers of complex dependencies then using your advanced command line skills to maybe possibly make it work.

andrewstuart··on AI risk is not sentience by computers, it is negligence by humans
Now this is AI doomsaying I can agree with.

But there’s nothing can convince me all humanity will be wiped out except a dinosaur level asteroid. Not a chance AI could wipe out all humans, zero chance.

andrewstuart··on FTC chair suggests AI developers should be liable for conduct of agents
AI CEOs response:

“But did you know our products will destroy all humanity?”

andrewstuart··on What About Rails?
Rails is dead.

Its founder has converted to AI driven Rust.

He has a point. Anything you could build in Rails you can now build in fast reliable type safe memory safe multithreaded Rust in minutes.

DHH will bring his tribe of true believers to where he has gone, where he has set up a new sideshow tent.

Do you follow the leader.

Is it Rails that you follow or is it DHH?

andrewstuart··on Back and shoulder surgery is often worse than useless
I know a surgeon who says it’s the extended enforced rest after surgery that heals the original problem. He says most people aren’t very good at resting properly without being forced by surgery.
andrewstuart··on The newest ESP32 can run Linux and it's getting close to a Raspberry Pi
NXP i.MX6 / i.MX8 Has the ram you seek.
andrewstuart··on OpenAI breaches Medicare, Albanese reveals
>> Don't press anything red.

Nope. There’s just a sign saying “red = launch nukes”.

Or maybe just a red button.

Or maybe just a green button that launches the nukes, without so much as “are you sure?”.

andrewstuart··on Gemini 3.8 text-to-speech
I’ve never found a TYS that does convincing British accents.

They all sound like Americans putting in their best fake British accent.

andrewstuart··on US criticises Australia's proposed algorithm opt-out laws as 'censorship'
It won’t stop here.

The Australian Prime Minister hates social media.

This is step two of a never ending assault.

andrewstuart··on 'Same sense of urgency': UN chief compares AI risk to nuclear weapons
How did we get to this utter bullshit raw panic?

The normies have been whipped into a frenzy like AI is going to destroy the world. Ok sure data centers represent a problem but compared to nuclear weapons? This has become flat out stupid.

andrewstuart··on I'm Tired of the AI Tone
“Load bearing”

“Here’s the part no one is talking about”

andrewstuart··on Microsoft agentically ports Copilot runtime to Rust for $120K
I did a lot of benchmarking of Gil free python.

Greenlets were much faster.

Gil free python gets stuck on all sorts of python locks. It’s slow.

andrewstuart··on Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Chairman, Names Son to Replace Him
Rich people tend to say they will give their money away but in fact retain control of it.
andrewstuart··on SDCC – Small Device C Compiler
I use SDCC for 8051.

I have started to notice that programming with an LLM it seems to make little difference if I get it to write the entire program in assembly language rather than c.

andrewstuart··on Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Chairman, Names Son to Replace Him
I think it would be tedious to be that wealthy. You’d spend all your time managing the money and associated stresses.

A super comfortable life with enough money to get you to 105 years old that all you need.

andrewstuart··on Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Chairman, Names Son to Replace Him
And me please. 2 mill.
andrewstuart··on A20 Pro shatters Geekbench 7 single-core record – beats desktop i9 and Ryzen 9
Interesting but not earth shattering.

I’m a Mac user but performance is good enough for most stuff and I’m several generations behind. I don’t neee worlds best performance in my desktop.

It would be super interesting if this was a Linux chip, where the performance is really needed for all sorts of back end applications. Even then its multi core is behind.

andrewstuart··on Norton Neo Browser
So this is from Symantec?
andrewstuart··on P(doom)
Dario is always worried.
andrewstuart··on P(doom)
>> Anthropic and OpenAI. Nobody else matters in this space right now (this might change, but we’re talking about the right now)

Disagree.

The free local LLMs are becoming extremely important.

And the more Claude and OpenAI restrict their services, the more people will want cutting edge local LLMs.

andrewstuart··on Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?
>> At least the frontpage is no longer filled with Ruby and Ruby on Rails projects anymore

Thank god.

andrewstuart··on Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?
I like it.

It’s relevant and current technology.

andrewstuart··on Anthropic researcher believes more than 10% chance AI 'could kill all humans'
Humans don’t need AI to do that temperature.

And we’ve already exploded many hundreds of nuclear weapons and no nuclear winter.

andrewstuart··on Anthropic researcher believes more than 10% chance AI 'could kill all humans'
This is science fiction.

How would AI do this?

May as well say AI would send a spaceship to pull an asteroid to earth.

I’m interested in realistic scenarios to justify what these AI psychosis people are genuinely worried about.

andrewstuart··on Anthropic researcher believes more than 10% chance AI 'could kill all humans'
Good setup for a computer game.
andrewstuart··on Anthropic researcher believes more than 10% chance AI 'could kill all humans'
I challenge anyone to come up with any way at all to kill all humans.

It’s essentially impossible.

There’s a 0% chance AI will kill all humans.
